Sometimes I feel poor because I only make like 2k a month and barely have a savings but then I watch these and I see people casually chilling in 5k of debt, giant car payments, expensive rent, using buy now lay later for cheap stuff, and a having enough subscriptions to need rocket money. Then I remember I only owe money on my car, I'm steadily paying that off, I only have a single subscription, and I don't use a credit card or any sort of pay later and I feel *SIGNIFICANTLY* better. Glad I'm not one of these mfs. Living I'm my parents basement was the correct choice. At least for now. Damn might take me 10 more years to buy a house but at least I won't have 50 years of debt after I do it.

So people are trading financial security for temporary pleasures instead of just saving for these things or prioritizing food and rent. We basically are raising an entire generation to just be mindless consumers by giving them Ipads and phones early on and exposed to the internet so young. It's pretty messed only reason gen z's isn't higher for takin on debt is most likely because a large portion of gen Z still aren't out of highschool once they are that number will probably rise and Gen Alpha I genuinely think will go after solo style careers like content creation over traditional jobs which will kinda leave a gap in things like health care more than there already is. As someone who is from a poor family i understand the sentiment but credit cards are crazy important just throw some subscriptions on it and pay it off and just don't go over 50% of your total credit card balance. Hell you can even lock it in a safe and do a random number generator if you are concerned with using it outside of some subscriptions. Especially in North America credit is super important for things like loans and buying cars and houses because it's basically your adult report card showing that you will likely pay them back. Building credit as early as you can is also super important

Travelling from the US to Europe is like 1500 dollars for one two way trip. So yeah I'm suprized. Hotels will be 100 dollars per night and activites could be another 100 + food another 100 because they're not eating cheap fast food but nice restaurants. So that's 300 dollars per day times 7 is 2100 dollars. 2000 bucks for a week of nice dense vacation sounds about right.

@@FlanPoirot you got several problems with that statement. first of all, more than "most of the worlds salary" means nothing seeing as salaray is often proportional to regional pricing, a "rich" country or neighbourhood might make considerably more on average without being actually rich, since everything there costs way more (additionally a good chunk of people in the world have insanely low salaries, literal cents, those skew the numbers id imagine, not that i think you had any source to begin with) another major point is that, it doesnt matter what your monthly salary is since this isnt a monthly or weekly expense. a 2k vacation could be a once in a multi-year or even lifetime thing. would you be irresponsable for doing one expensive trip? dont think so also already mentioned it but yeah you def dont have a source for your claim. 2k is like, min montly wage in central europe. im sure there are plenty of places who earn "less" (all is very relative) but i still dont think your assesment is accurate

The good thing is, if I am setting money aside, and I lose my job, or some life event comes, I will have some money. Comment from the Netherlands. I find astonishing that so many individuals in US have such irresponsible with their money and borrowed money. They may avoid their problem now, but it will hit them later when they grow older eventually.

I took on a bit of debt for a vacation but only because it was a trip I had been dreaming of since I was 11. I thought I had enough to cover it when I left, but I spent more than I thought while I was there and I figured well this has been my dream for my whole life I am going to live it to the fullest and not skimp out. If it means I have to pay a hundred dollars on interest later then that's ok for me. I also knew I would be able to repay it relatively fast, and I have.

That's just weird to me because in my mind that means you ended up with $0 in your bank account due to the vacation. So you didn't have money for rent & food when you got back. Is that not terrifying and insane to go if you had that little margin before going? I just don't go to places until I can afford them and working on building a business right now so that I can afford to travel one day. Business is rough thus far but I feel like I'll be able to fly around the world one day.

@@talyahr3302I feel the same, and like I'm a world apart from people that can so confidently hit zero like that and build back (though I also wonder how much they actually build back to at any point...). Personally, I've always followed the advice (from Fidelity if I remember correctly?) where you save 1x of your annual income by age 30, 2x by age 35, etc. as a baseline (minimum) of how much money I should have at any time. If my total savings ever even fell below those benchmarks, I would instantly be cutting down my spending to the bare necessities and finding ways to increase my income and rates of return to catch back up (thankfully that hasn't happened yet). I want to say "maybe I'm a little too focused on retirement though, and somewhere between these two financial ways of living is a more balanced approach to things", but then I'm also like... you sort of *have* to worry about your retirement savings this badly, because retirement is inevitable, so what I'm doing is basically required isn't it? How are people expecting to basically exponentially grow their money later in life in time for retirement, since that's what I assume will happen if they're experiencing near-zero liquid cash moments in their lives.

Going on a family vacation with my wife, a friend nannying and 3 kids across country to Disneyland after quitting my career job was all on credit cards in 2021. I was so stressed the whole week seeing the debt rack up. Didn’t feel like a vacation to me. Since then, I started my own company to expense trips.

Big A sounds like Dave Ramsey sometimes with his credit card and klarna hate. Credit card signup bonuses pay for my vacations. I never carry a balance unless it's on 0% APR for the first year. In that case, I just put the money into a HYSA or CD and pay the card off in full before the 0% APR intro promo ends.
