@@howardj602 That’s true, but we haven’t had a world war since mad either. My personal opinion is that the mad situation is a lot more dangerous than guns in America. Realistically, if we have a nuclear war then a huge percentage of people will be gone within 6 months anyway. From that point of view it’s difficult to see the advantage of being armless in those circumstances.

I was once in a situation where there was no one else there to help me and having a firearm averted a confrontation with someone intent on doing me harm. It doesn't matter what could have happened, there's just what did happen which was nothing. We were both very lucky.

@@CraigScottFrost That's a bad example. A civilian wouldn't need to be armed in a courthouse the same way they might in other less secure places. There are law enforcement officers with guns and metal detectors and other measures to help keep people safe there. That's also true of other places like hospitals that now often have armed security staff and similar measures in place. Obviously civilians, even those licensed to conceal carry, aren't able to do so in every situation. But it's not an either/or option. Having access to a firearm when someone can do so legally can literally save their or someone else's life.

@@CraigScottFrost there may come a time where a violent or I’ll intending person may only understand the language of violence, or threat of it. Sometimes knowing the option is there could potentially be enough to diffuse such a situation. In order unfortunate cases, it’s an option you’ll be able to fall back on. You can learn CPR and still wish to never use, but still be forced to in order to save a life.

I'm saddened to see the impetus for training/owning firearms comes from such a purely political point, it is what it is, but it's very good to see fellow Americans having and training on firearms. This is collective security, and it's a very good thing. As well, firearm training and practice instills a respect for the weapon and its capability. We need more of this because security can never be truly outsourced. Truly, this is a good thing, and it's something that can bridge differences between both sides; this is a common ground. You'll find the most respectful people on earth at a gun range.

I seriously question those stats that he provided at the very end. If I recall correctly, that Philadelphia study was filled with mostly criminals armed with firearms defending themselves from other criminals. If you were five times more likely to die resisting with a firearm, there should be five times as many stories of concealed carry holders being killed as there are of concealed carry holders killing their attacker. But that isn't the case.

As a US citizen our supreme court has ruled that the police do not have to respond to a situation that is dangerous. In the US a gun is used to prevent a crime over 700 times per day. That is according to DOJ statistics.

That is according to DOJ", That is why I wrote I did not see a DOJ site making that claim. As far as "Duty to protect", it goes back way farther than last summer. One of the earliest was a DC court opinion in 1981, and a Supreme Court decision in 2005.

If things go wrong, there's nobody else to blame - there's no outside predator or alien species threatening this incredible success story. Fortunately, the vast majority of people are guided by reason, want dialogue, moderation and deescalation. In a liberal country everybody should be able to find a way of life that suits them, respecting other life choices that contribute to the explorative power, adaptability and richness of a culture.

Why do I feel like America's heading to a Battle Royale?

Hearing the father of a trans kid talk about how afraid he is for the safety of his child broke my heart. I understand why he would feel that he needs a gun. Statistics show that he’s mistaken about the idea that having a gun will make his child safer. That’s easy for me to say though. If I were in his position I might make the same mistake. Really, when I say "leftist", I'm specifically referring to the traditional idea of a leftist rather than someone on the left of the spectrum in the US. There are two very different "lefts" in the US: liberals and actual leftists. Liberals are typically capitalists of some flavor or another and are barely left in anything more than name, so Im not really talking about them when I use the term "leftist". That being said, I think you'd be surprised how the number of actual leftists has swelled here in the last decade or so. Its all thanks to wide and unfettered access to the internet and a worsening economy, I think. We're still a minority, but not nearly as much as we were in, say, the McCarthy era.

They are different because they are not the same, the only way to resolve differences is to make them the same is only through Violent removal ( death ) , there can only be one.

I think it's possible for these two things to be true: 1) under the normal, peaceful circumstances the US has enjoyed for decades, it is much more dangerous to own a gun than not, and 2) in the face of an increasingly violent fascist movement, the risk of political violence has reached the point where in the near future, it would be better to be armed than unarmed.

I just came back after living in the Philippines for 5 years. I had cctv at my house, police were there strictly to enforce (not patrol), and it is perfectly acceptable for the responsibility of self defense fall on the individual. Police there are to catch the criminal, not stop the criminal.

Self-defense is lawful. In America, that might mean legal carry.

For as frequently as he kept looking at his notes to be statistically correct, he could’ve also looked through his notes to see how much membership costs and if a license is required & as an LGBTQ Person, how to go into business with a weapon.

Not sure how i feel about those statistics you used at the end. Seems like those were about being armed vs a violent mugging or robbery situation. If its politicial violence like they are talking about, the shooter is already shooting to kill so dont feel that is applicable. Im not for lax gun laws or anything, but America is just such a different place than Europe when it comes to firearms, i feel you might be missing some context through your lens. The cat is already long out the bag here lol, like the people interviewed said: theres a political arms race happening here whether you or I like it or not. Responsible ownership and stricter laws and proper training requirements should be the way forward, least imo. Disarming yourself when another side is arming to kill you is just naive, sadly 😔

When I am suppose to feel safe? When everyone is carrying a gun? One hundred and fifty years ago on the western frontier everyone carried a gun. The city of Dodge in the the 1880s had a homicide rate 300 times higher than Miami in the 1980s. Every statistic shows that the more guns you have the higher the homicide rate rises. WHY? because a drunken argument in a bar without guns is just a fist fight with 3-4 people getting some bruises and maybe some broken bones, but a bar fight when everyone is carrying a gun turns into a blood bath with 5 people dead.

@@jpegjpg Except that you are lying or at the very "best" misinformed. Dodge City had about 5 murders/year. The US used to have *less* gun violence when guns were completely free. Most European countries didn't have gun control either just 20, 30, 50 or 100 years back. Same there. And I'm not even from the US. I'm from Sweden. We have more gun violence in 2023 with a draconic gun law and criminal immigrants (usually non-European) getting hold of guns anyway than we had in 1923, when my great grandfather was young and there was no gun law at all and Sweden was 99.9% ethnically Swedish. Only sheep believe in gun laws.

Relying on a police force for security is the foolishness that got the US into its current mess. It is already been established in court that they have no obligation to save anyone but themselves. You cannot outsource safety. Only you can safeguard you and your family's livelihood. Everyone needs to become well trained, and also become well-acquainted with your neighbors.

Wouldn't be the first time. We've survived the organized violence of the Civil War, the anarcho-communist insurrection, and the Civil Rights Movement. And each time the more humanist side made gains over the self-interested idealists.

Looking at the US from the outside, it almost seems like it's a country living in a completely different era than all of the other countries of the west. A different century almost. The US may not be at war with an outside nation like we see in Ukraine, but they are very much still at war with themselves. And I am skeptical that more guns = safer communities, regardless of agenda. If there were no guns at all than perhaps, but that's unlikely to ever occur because guns are sacred in the US for reasons I have yet to grasp. Again, that's something entirely unique to the US as far as western countries go.

If you actually visited here its a lot different. I have started to just step away from a lot of this because it gets tiring. Everyday is just pretty normal. Nothing bad happens like everything I see on TV or online. Call it ignorance but only negative stuff is sales on TV and the internet. Much more mundane and positive stuff on life here. Also if you avoid areas that are just known to have issues like major cities and the west coast. I realize I see all this negative stuff about the US and would get really heated. But in real life there is none of that. At least for me. Media just makes everything more negative because that's what sales.

I'm on the left. I was career military, combat vet, well trained and very experienced, and I am well armed. I know MANY others on the left who are like myself. I want nothing more than for everyone to live in peace and show respect to others but I'm not going to be caught off guard. Unlike my fellow countrymen on the right I don't tie my entire identity to my military service or my guns, I'm quiet.

I'm an 45-ish year old American Independent voter. I lean left for sure... but I don't subscribe to a particular party or ideology. Most of my friends who are farther left (than I am) own guns. No one is under any illusions about the history of our country, civil rights, labor unions, etc. Where we are now is just another page in the chapter of bigotry. In another 50-75 years it will be behind us as we slowly (ever too slowly) work our way into the next chapter of the American experience.

Education is always good.

They have a right to be armed, they are smart to train, and they have every reason to be concerned about escalating violence. I disagree with their politics and their beliefs but I support their rights regardless. Embracing that is required. Embracing each other's politics is not. I see nothing wrong or concerning here, but I do see the growing push to make their ethics into policy as concerning....just as I see it concerning when I see it on the religious right. As an American I give them the benefit of the doubt until I see otherwise.

I'm an elder transgender leftist. This makes me a triple target, but I refuse to be a victim. I have been threatened with violence in my home twice in my life, and I will NEVER live without the means to protect myself. If you don't know how it feels to be under attack and in danger - if you have never been in that situation yourself - then you'll never understand how terrifying it is. Nobody's going to save you. It's a bit obvious isn't it? If you're getting robbed at gun point and you also have a gun, you are far more likely to get shot over that robbery than if you had just cooperated with the thief. Same applies to most violent situations, even getting pulled over by police could turn deadly if they perceive you as a threat to their own safety. Having a gun might save you in certain situations but it might also escalate a situation that wasn't deadly in the first place.

That number also includes criminals who have died with a gun as a result of lawful self defense. The situation you described is exceedingly rare.

Trades will be safe for quite sometime. Between unionships, the lack of market share anyone company has and the cost of developing and implementing any kind of automation is out of the question. Throw in retrofitting, repair and maintenance of existing structures and you've found more security. But a computer that can write its own code, that's a real conundrum there. A whole new chapter has started, and it's bigger than the internet or the gun.

Just thought about this saying but what about if you carry the sword but never use it? I myself live pacifistic and never want to hurt anyone I used to legit cry whenever I hurt someone didnt matter if it was physical or with words, when I was younger. Despite that I still own firearms I pray to my ancestors everyday that it's only relegated to target shooting and the occasional hunt that I never have to aim and pull that trigger on anyone, I've actually considered buying a pepper ball gun for defense while still having my guns as a last resort. You yourself have to understand this world is dangerous sometimes and you have the option to use whatever you see fit to defend yourself doesn't matter if it's a rock, stick, bow, gun or your own hands. If someone wants to defend themselves with a gun than thats there choice and you have to respect that.

Bad is never far away, safety is an illusion. Be aware not consumed.

When it's not about surviving but, instead, about taking them with you.

strap in, theres a lot of money being poured into the hate machine and it aint slowing down any time soon. Its almost certainly going to get a LOT worse, especially with external factors like global conflicts and climate catastrophes compounding everything.

Where are people to say that when the proud boys are out there marching with their guns shouting racial epithets and whatnot. No one seems to ever care how that will end they just keep saying "mental health" after each shooting.

The 2nd amendment is for all Americans. I’m glad they are using and practicing those rights. All Americans should. Regardless of your politics or anything else.

It's actually for state government militias like the National Guard. But the Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 in 2008 it's for everybody. It's a perversion of the text, but activist right wing judges produced by the Federalist Society don't really care much for law.

I am left of center when it comes to social issues and I agree with gun ownership in america. While best gun owner is the guy who never use their gun, on both the right and left side but they are a reality of today's america with the rise of extremism.

Truth! Both the far religious right AND the LGBTQ far left are two bully ideologies that push themselves on ppl that don’t wanna chose either. Most ppl want nothing to do with either of them.

I’ve lived in Texas all my life nobody cares what anybody else is doing we all help each other out no matter who you are I don’t know where they find these stories never came across or even heard from someone who actually knows an extremist from any side… weird

After Trump, I don't see why so many people want police and the military to be the only ones allowed to have guns. Do you really trust the president and police with ALL the power?
