How Alonso's 2019 Indy 500 dream fell apart

Спорт

Fernando Alonso and McLaren's shock failure to qualify for the 2019 Indianapolis 500 prompted immediate questions on how it all went so wrong. As the dust settles on Alonso's second attempt at the great race, Matt Beer and Tom Errington join Glenn Freeman to explain how things unravelled from the moment Alonso stepped into his orange car at Texas in April, the backstory behind why McLaren didn't repeat its 2017 trick of partnering with a top team, and what should happen next in the two-time F1 champion's quest for the Triple Crown

    You can't throw all the blame on Mclaren. Everyone in Indycar uses the same chassis, gearbox, body & aero. The 2 engine suppliers are closely hoologated as well. One biggest problems might have been that Alonso wrecked the car, and missed way too much practice. Now Mclaren was god awful slow fixing it, but you can't complain too much when you wreck the car. People forget that this is a completely new aero package with less downforce than what Alonso is used too, he seemed just as lost as Mclaren. Even on bump day he got a tuned dampers from Andretti & complete setup info from Penske & still couldn't make it.

    I read a Sportsnet article that summarized some of the mistakes McLaren made, these are all literally unbelievable: 1. They were late to the April test and couldn't put the car on track because they forgot to find a steering wheel until a week before. Yes, they forgot they needed a steering wheel, which Zak Brown had to personally go and find from Cosworth and couldn't be ready on time. 2. A month before qualifying, they decided didn't like the shade of orange that Carlin painted the chassis they bought from them (which was their spare), so they had it repainted. It was STILL in the paint shop a month later, 30 mins from the track, when Alonso had his practice crash. While other teams that suffered crashes had their spares on track literally hours later, McLaren lost almost 2 full days of track time because they couldn't organize a papaya orange paint job that took less than a month to complete. And apparently they didn't foresee any reason to have their spare car at the track ready to go even if it wasn't painted exactly the way they wanted. 3. An electrical problem on the car lost them even more track time. They fired a guy over it, so it was obviously something idiotic. 4. Alonso's first qualifying run was sabotaged because they sent the car out onto the track with a punctured tire, but didn't detect it beforehand because according to Brown they bought "incorrect tire sensors". 5. After begging the entire paddock for help with a new setup, they sent Alonso out onto the track with a car that was dragging on the ground because they made a mistake converting inches to millimeters. (!!!) 6. After being knocked out of the race in qualifying, McLaren discovered they had accidentally installed the wrong gear ratio in the car. Brown says they accidentally installed a ratio for 227.5mph instead of 229mph. Alonso missed the grid by 0.019mph with incorrect gearing. And this is just the stuff we know about. With the exception of maybe the electrical problem (which still necessitated getting rid of a crew member), any one of these mistakes is unfathomable for a professional race team of any caliber. This is McLaren for christ sake. They think it's acceptable to have their spare car off track getting a paint job while their only other chassis is out there running? They don't know how to convert inches to mm? They don't know their car requires a steering wheel? They're putting wrong parts on the car for an Indy 500 qualifying run?? Jesus, this is stuff that stupid people that have never been to a race track in their lives would do. If Alonso doesn't cut all ties with McLaren after this, I'm no longer a fan. These idiots couldn't organize a lemonade stand, if he's going to pin his triple crown hopes on McLaren then he's as incompetent as the rest of that team is.

Both of those teams are struggling with a lack of talent within, and nobody is around within the leadership that knows how to win and knows how to make a good car. McLaren can't even get a spec IndyCar to run properly, and for absolutely ridiculous reasons. You and I could have run a more organized program than McLaren did. At a minimum we would have had a steering wheel on the car, the spare car ready at the track and I'm sure between the 2 of us we can convert inches to millimeters correctly. F1 is obviously a superior race series better cars and better drivers (the top F1 drivers) but there are definitely multiple drivers in indycar that are better than some of the F1 drivers racing today. If he wants to do it with McLaren though, he'll need to build the team, and that's going to take running full seasons and maybe a couple years. I think he could get an offer from a major team for a one race Indy ride. What he did in 17 with an Andretti car showed me he can have a shot just running the 500.

  • @houstonharwood7197

    @houstonharwood7197

    5 жыл бұрын

    So think about this logically. Think how small the marginal gains are on a track like Indy. Everyone will be taking roughly the same line, and trying to never lift the throttle. So the setup of the car becomes absolutely crucial to gain a competitive advantage, and this is heightened by the limited areas of development for the teams. Because qualifying is a four lap average speed, maintaining a high minimum corner speed is CRUCIAL. This minimum speed is what allows you to go really, really quick on the straights. For example, Ed Carpenter's team wasn't dipping below 227mph in the corners, and was hitting 238mph on the straights. The Mclaren was dipping below 223mph in the corners and was only hitting 235mph no the straights. Add that difference up over a four lap average, and your time is way down compared to the fast cars, despite both cars taking roughly the same line and staying flat out the whole way. Indy is the equivalent of taking 130R at Suzuka four times a lap, at over 225mph in the corners every time. It is by no means a simple fact of "driving in a circle." The air temperature, the wind, where the sun is shining, where the tires fall off, how much or how little down force you run, what kind of gurney flaps you run on the front wing, what kind of stagger you use on the suspension, damper setup, gearing (super important), there are so many factors at play. Very easy to have a "good car" and just be slow, because any one of those factors isn't working perfectly with the weather, track temp, tires, etc.

    Even with a well established team, I don't think Alonso would have won. It's only his 2nd time in oval racing. That said he's an excellent driver, so he would be able to adapt fast into oval racing.

    He is a top notch natural racing driver and oval racing is much easier for him than F1. Don't you remember the 2017 where at one time he was leading the race and the moments before his engine blew, his team said they are going for win.

    @@shuklachetan1909 Oval racing is not easier. It is more difficult as it is PACK racing, with tons of over taking. Just because Indy is 4 left turns doesn't make it "easier" - in fact, as Mario Andretti has said, turn one at the start of Indy is the most difficult turn in all of racing. - I'll trust Mario, he's won in EVERYTHING and EVERYWHERE.

    "What would you guys advise that he should do next? Should he come back to the race, and if so how should he go about it?" How about entering the whole season properly with a team dedicated to the series, like everyone else, i.e. like Mansell did, rather than dropping in like Mary Poppins and expecting to win it just like that?

    AndreiTupolev They should open up another seat and perhaps try to get Ocon, Hartley, Vandoorne or maybe even Ericsson, that way they can build up experience and have reliable drivers.

    Those american Indy cars are much better looking than F1 cars these days. But i agree that Alonso should boot McLaren and try to get best car for racing in Indy. He also should try to reapir his relationship with Honda, because Honda is the winning engine in USA
