    xer xer Starvation isn't a shortage of food problem. It's a political and geographical problem. Like user above me said: they're not getting it anyway. An ETHICAL restaurant would box up the "untouched" leftovers and give it to poor families and the homeless. Or a nearby soup kitchen.

  • @TrashRai

    @TrashRai

    6 жыл бұрын

    Matt0719g Not really relevant (and I was told by someone else, so I can't confirm if it's true), but my understanding of the Bible "glutton" is in regards to the Romans I think it was. Something about them having massive feasts and gorging on the food. When they were full, they throw it back up so they can eat more. Like I said, I don't know how true it is. If it's real, you can argue buffets are like. The person eating with the intention of spiting someone else and getting the most out of their money. A half eaten plate may be from slapping a scoop of oysters mixed with vegetables and picking out just the oysters. Also for the Asian pay for excess model, it's so you don't waste food. At some AYCE places, such as Korean BBQ, servers bring you preset plates of meat. Some cuts are expensive and it takes time for servers to get around to getting your food. The excess charge stops people from ordering massive quantities (to avoid waiting on the server per round) and not finishing it.

    I was once thrown out of a Pizza Hut on an all-you-can-eat night... for eating too much. A friend and I used to go every week and make a game of figuring out strategies for packing in more and more pizza each time. Normally they'd come around the tables and hand out slices as people needed them, but the people at this particular Pizza Hut got so tired of coming back to our table again and again and again and again, for hours, that when we came in they recognized us and they would serve us whole pizzas at a time. That was until one night when a manager finally had enough. We'd just beaten our old record, with my friend eating six whole pizzas and me eating seven, and were asking for our next pizzas. The manager came over and in a loud voice so everyone in the restaurant could hear, tried to shame us, saying, "DON'T YOU THINK YOU'VE HAD ENOUGH?" We looked at each other and said no. So he just threw us out. Proof that "all you can eat" isn't actually all you can eat. There are limits.

    Marc D. Why would you want to skip what you'd like to eat most just to eat some more expensive stuff? Why would you prefer to eat 50 bucks of food you are going to enjoy less, over 30 bucks of food you actually want to eat. This is like buying discounted junk you didnt want in the first place instead of buying things you do want, because you save 10 extra bucks compared to standard retail price😂

    Not eating before is a good plan, but I think so long as you're topping your next best option for eating out when it comes to food-for-price ratio, you're good. I don't go to a buffet to fill myself up with what might be the most expensive by the kilo, I go there to eat 1. good food 2. a few different kinds of good food 3. stuff I might not try out otherwise 4. as much as I want. If I eat almost a whole pizza's worth, some finger food, some other things, tasty soda, and possibly plenty of dessert (though for additional cost) for 10€ (or some more with the dessert), it'll surely be more worth it and satisfying than ordering a pizza for 7.50€ or so. That's the price at my regular pizzeria, and doesn't even cover a drink. Of course this is a specific example for cheaper food, but to give you the picture!

    Tip if you are going to a buffet is before dining, fast for long hours so that you come hungry. Don't start with carbs, go for the seafood first, then meat station. Don't rush to fill your plate with one type of food. Take small amounts of each so that you have a variety. During dining, don't drink too much fluid. Eat slowly and enjoy your meal. Don't rush like a pig in a sty. Save some space for dessert. End with coffee or tea or whatever beverages your kidney and liver can handle. Ensure you have enough time to eat and relax.

    All Indian buffets serve lower quality food than the a la carte, that's how they save money. They also use the "cheaper food first" trick. Naan, biryani and pulao are placed toward the front, while the curries are towards the back. That's why you don't judge any Indian restaurant by the buffet. If you want the best experience, order off the menu. Good curry takes time.

    Another contributor I think is that customers generally come in groups. While there might be a big eater or two in a group, there are also some light eaters who are just with the group. And I’d bet drinks are a huge contributor. They cost a couple dollars extra and save the restaurant money on the food that the drinks replace.

    I went to a chinese restaurant once and we also had an all you can eat buffet. But the employees of the rsstaurant just took forever to refill on the meat section. Sometimes we even had to go over there and ask if there was more and they just refilled with only a few pieces. (We did eat alot, so they probably wanted to prevent us from going over their profit margin.)

Though it probably doesn’t explain every trick, since here in Italy we have japanese all-you-can-eat restaurants that are served by waiters where you can choose what you order from the menu (therefore all the food placement strategies don’t apply). There must be some hidden trick there too. 😊

    My parents and I were asked to leave the sushi buffet once. Mind you, I'm 6'1 and 137 lbs. And my parents are slim as well. How did we do it? We only ordered seemingly expensive, intricate and unusual items from the menu - yuzu tuna, sweet shrimps, beef, grilled mackerel, etc. Skipped the drinks, tea only. Didn't order any form of noodles or rice. No sushi. Sashimi only. And we ordered multiple dishes in large bulks. We sampled nearly all the good stuff on the menu. An hour later, the manager came by to tell us that there is time limit on each table. Right... The family next to us was there before we arrived, and they were still eating. We laughed our way out of the restaurant after paying only $80 CDN for all the foods we had (approximately $60 U.S.)

    Started to rise in the 70s and 80s, coincidentally the beginning of the obesity epidemic. Declined when Americans started to pay attention to their waistbands and decided they didn't want slop casually served on an assembly line by a disinterested chef made of the budget cuts and corn fillers. It's not hard to see why they're dying now. It's because their audience is too!

    Buffets are one of the dirtiest places you can eat. Consumers with dirty hands have direct access to the utensils and edibles. I worked in a buffet back in high school and on a daily basis witnessed people walking out of the restroom to the buffet without washing their hands, licking their fingers while standing over the food, dropping buffet utensils on the floor and placing them back and using their hands to grab things. Being the “germaphobe” that I am, I was sure to keep a batch of hot bleach water near so I could wipe the counters down and keep the utensils changed out. Chinese restaurants are even worse and much less healthy. Home cooking is made with love and it’s cheaper, cook at home and live longer.

    I realise they are correct with putting more expensive products in the back. There is a Chinese-Japanese all-you-can-eat restaurant I went to once, and the sushi was served in an obscured area around the corner while the cheaper stuff was in pure plain sight in front of the customers. You had to really look to find the sushi. Plus, the area of the sushi was small, so if there was a big line you know people would get impatient leave to get the cheaper food and come later for the sushi. But by that time they could be full already. Clever placement.
