For 50 years I played with planes in various states of tune. When Leonard Lee started providing information and selling tools and accessories, I was able to realize a massive improvement in my old hand me downs. Then I bought the "Jackrabbet plane" by Veritas. So this is how a plane should work! The antique Stanley /Bailies have earned their rest, so I dust them off from time to time, but at the bench there is a Veritas in hand or close to hand!

I'm nowhere near as experienced as you but I've restored and used a handful of Stanley's, picked up a Veritas dovetail saw and was so impressed I ordered a Veritas jack plane and fell in love. Now I'm selling my older tools to complete my Veritas collection 😄

Seriously. The rapid cuts, and whooshing is just not appropriate for the audience that would be looking to spend $400 on a big, high quality, bench plane, or learn how it's made. Using a bench plane is generally a slower-paced, relaxed form of woodworking. My eleven year old is not the audience here. :)

I design electronics, and can relate to the "everything you design on a computer, whether it's a cruise ship or a pen, is the same size on the screen". I have tricked myself numerous times by becoming "size blind" after working on a miniaturized design for too long.

Start with the "jack of all trades" the low angle jack. Its designed to do the job of several different planes depending on the angle of the blade used. And depending on your budget the Stanley will get you by just fine www.amazon.com/Stanley-12-137-No-62-Angle-Plane/dp/B002B56CUY

Ill sell you mine I regret buying it All of Veritas stuff is just well over priced and you dont get better quality for what you pay Plus its low angle you get a much better finish with a smoothing plane with a iron at 45 This thing is for the dumb ass who has to much money! As the body parts are of cast material (I'm guessing cast iron?), i can't help but wonder, why they use cooling lubricant for the machining. Cast iron is known for lubricating itself cause of the graphite. I wouldn't use cast Aluminium for such a tool. Dont get the lubricating part though.

A lot of the time flood coolant is actually used just to clear the chips so they aren't being recut by the cutting tool. Blasting with compressed air can do the same thing but most CNC machines are already setup from the factory for flood coolant.

ANY metal is easier to a chine when lubricated plus this us NOT ordinary cast iron it is ductile. It is stronger .and will dull the milling tools quicker without lubrication.

Didn't realize Vertias made "professional" tools. Do they make an amateur line as well? lmfao The cost has no bearing on weather a tool is for a professional or not. many top craftmens in the world USE OLD refurbished stanley bailys they bought on the cheap at tool swaps and yard sales. I only have 2 veritas and a shit load of stanleys. Cant say one is better than the other and I still have the original blades in the stanleys where the veritas have the new tool steel blades. They are a bitch to sharpen and in the big picture do not hold a edge that much longer than the old stanley blades. So i guess they are no more professional than a $30 stanley thats 50-60 yr old.
