How a VAUGHAN Claw Hammer is made - BRANDMADE.TV
Vaughan & Bushnell Mfg. Co. was founded in Peoria, Illinois by Alexander Vaughan. It began as a plumbing business, which in those days consisted of digging wells and piping water into the kitchens of the local citizenry. The inventive 18 year old blacksmith had an idea for improving the design of the augers used for digging post holes. He set up a blacksmith shop in a room behind a hardware store owned by Sidney Bushnell and the rest is history. For over 135 years Vaughan & Bushnell Mfg. C has been designing and manufacturing hammers, many of which are now accepted as basic hammer designs - from the distinctive curve of the claw to the set of the handle and the shape of the head - were all introduced by Vaughan. Watch how Vaughan hammers are made.

The Vaughan 16 oz. Curved Claw Hammer - designed and made in America.
The company that is today Vaughan & Bushnell Mfg. Co. was founded in Peoria, Illinois by Alexander Vaughan. It began as a plumbing business, which in those days consisted of digging wells and piping water into the kitchens of the local citizenry. Alexander’s business prospered, but the inventive, 18 yr old blacksmith had his eye on bigger things.
The split rail fencing of farmland was beginning to be replaced by steel posts and wire. Alexander had an idea for improving the design of the augers used for digging post holes. He turned idea into reality, and believing that Chicago would outstrip Peoria as a business center, moved to the Windy City. He set up a blacksmith shop in a room behind a hardware store owned by Sidney Bushnell.
Design:
We've been designing and manufacturing hammers for over 135 years. Many of what are now accepted as basic hammer designs - from the distinctive curve of the claw to the set of the handle and the shape of the head - were introduced by Vaughan. All are the result of Vaughan's commitment to constant hammer improvement and extensive field testing.
Balance is difficult to describe and impossible to formulate, but when a hammer's got it - you can just "feel it." A well-balanced hammer can seem to "swing itself" reducing stress on muscles and tendons. The hammer becomes an extension of arm, swinging smoothly and easily, delivering power blows almost effortlessly. Proper head-to-handle weight distribution is one of the key factors and Vaughan hammers have it! All Vaughan hammers are designed with our exclusive CAD/CAM system and extensively field tested.

The legendary mrpete222 does a pretty cool shop tour. The video is less refined than this but it's more of a plant walkthrough that shows many of the processes in more detail. Very satisfying to see an operation of this size still employing human beings! It's hammertime!

Vaughan hammers aren't so big in the UK but you can get them. I bought a Vaughan brick hammer when I was an apprentice, I didn't know who Vaughan were, I just needed a brick hammer, it was the best brick hammer I ever used till it was stolen. The quality stuck in my mind and I learned about Vaughan. I carry a little pro hammer in my general tool box, just a lovely thing.

Screw the Vaughan steel eagle, the Vaughan & Bushnell 999 is their best hammer, and probably the best framing hammer ever made. Nothing has ever and will never come along that's as good as a good piece of straight grained American hickory for a tool handle. Nothing absorbs shock as well, feels as good in hand, is as easy to shape as desired, ages as well, feels as good, and is as easy to replace as a properly wedged hickory handle.

I have one of Vaughan's excellent 23oz. California style framing hammers with a hickory handle. It has the waffled strike face. I never use the magnetic nail set much, I just prefer the shape of that hammer head and the small bend in the handle which gives more leverage. These hammers are truly All-American......the steel forging done in Illinois......the hickory handles are made in Tennessee. Harbor Freight also has a China version for $10. I've been told it's good, but a foundry in China isn't putting Americans to work. The Vaughan is well worth the extra $20 IMHO.

Hickory is the worst wood for a hammer or axe. I have several axes, some with white oak handles and some with hickory handles. The white oak is much easier on the hands and elbow joints in a day of working.

From the companies website: The lightweight DDT 16, with its patented deep “V” head design, provides faster, greater power at point of impact with less stress and arm fatigue. The DDT 16 hammer features a patented titanium head with overstrike guard. It’s exclusive Double “D”™ Magnetic Nail Holder has the ability to hold both standard and duplex nails and provides increased reach for one-handed nail starting, while the Sidewinder™ Nail Puller provides extra leverage for removing nails without ripping up forms. For fast and easy tear downs and rip outs the Short Stack™ Claws on the DDT 16 hammer are reinforced to provide increased strength for prying. Heads Made in China. Handles Made in USA. Assembled in USA. So the metal parts are made in China and they send them to the company in USA who presses or in this case screws a wooden handle onto the hammer head? I would consider making the handle about 5% of the overall process, so these are indeed 5% made in the USA and 95% made in China. Or if we just round it off: MADE IN CHINA.

The hammer is actually stamped, not forged. I am a carpenter and have used most brand of hammers and I wouldn't put Vaughan hammers anywhere near the top. There is something wrong with the steel in the hammer, it rebounds too much. There hammers are well made but the steel in the heads needs to be made of steel that gives more of a dead blow. The best hammer I have ever used is a Japanese hammer with a white oak handle. The head is 20 oz and all the weight is in the head. It feels like a 16 oz hammer, easy on the elbow but will drive 16 penny mails with two hard blows and an easy blow to finish off.

I had rather use an American hammer for sure, but the companies that make American tools are hard headed and refuse to change. I have dozens of chalk lines, US made, that I bought as US made ones got a little better over the years, but it wasn't until a Japanese company made a really good one, that I was satisfied. Same thing with pry bars, the US companies have finally copied the Japanese ones, but they aren't made well.
