    @@GodsOfSc so you're saying that the founders of Jagex (being the gower brothers) are lying? just like all the other older mods like Mod Ash. Because it's in the Runescape documentary that Jagex made themselves where they explicitely say there was NO backup other than that one from 2007. Keep in mind the gower brothers don't work at Jagex anymore & have no need to lie about it. You're just highly delusional. When there are changes to the code it's just that. saved to the current version. It doesn't automatically make a backup of what was before. And keep in mind Jagex uses their own in-house coding software that was based on Java (now switched to C++) Also saying there were backups wouldn't stop them from re-using or re-colouring old updates. Your logic is insanely flawed.

    @@ByeBaybe that is absolutely nothing like this. Here's the difference: what you are backing up is the finished, packaged product for general consumption. From that state, you can't access the negatives, the original film medium, original audio sources, the film minus special effects layers, the special effects, any post production changes that were made, and none of the notes as to why changes were made, and how they were made. You couldn't ever update or modify the movie based on what you have backed up. Games are even more complicated, as you need the right tools to modify and build the actual program itself. As the project evolves, you build new tools and stop maintaining old ones, you move to new versions of programming languages that might not play well with old legacy code, RuneScape has unique file formats that need specialized tools. And on top of that, software projects aren't just a .zip file of plaintext, usually. You need all the tooling, batteries included, to fully reproduce the end product. "Backups" aren't super helpful in a lot of cases, because they're just records of changes made to a project over time. It would be too difficult to store and maintain individual snapshots of every single version every time you published it. Minecraft is a very unique example of a game where almost every single release is archived. But, here's the kicker, the source code might not have been, just the release product. Another less technical explanation: the game or movie you have is a cake. You have an idea of what kind of cake it is, and you can get some hints as to what tools and processes were used to make it (if you're also an experienced baker), but without actually having the recipe and the notes of the original baker's process the best you can do is take a good guess if you tried to make the cake again yourself. It would be different. All RuneScape private servers are built like this, actually. They look at what a specific revision of the client was asking for, and build their best approximation of a backend server that does what the client asks for. But accuracy is almost never 100%

    I remember hearing that it was because a player was kicked out of the house while in the boxing ring, which enables combat. So since he was forcibly kicked out instead of leaving, he missed the flag to turn his combat back off.

  • @DragonBallZKaifan2

    @DragonBallZKaifan2

    9 күн бұрын

    I have heard it was the being kicked out of the house while trapped in the magic cage in the throne room and in the middle of being sent into the house’s dungeon. And that PvP in player houses back then was actually enabled by default, the “Attack” option just gets hidden unless you are in one of the player combat rings or are in the dungeon. Combine that with the game-breaking amount of lag that was going on in that house party (it was estimated that around 800 players on that server were in that house party) and you get a recipe for disaster. After the events of June 6, 2006, a function was eventually implemented into the game engine that can actually check where players are in the game world and enabling or disabling certain things based on their current location. (so even if another glitch causes you to carry a PvP flag into a SAFE zone, you won’t actually be able to take advantage of it because the game now knows that you are in the wrong location for that.)

    Jagex should hire an official Runescape historian. I think it would be really fun to have someone create a really detailed account for the game's history... given that it is actually one of the oldest MMORPGs that still is widely loved, its actually a really big part of digital gaming history and internet history in general. In 100 years students might study how games like Runescape transitioned from the dawn of internet into a completely adopted online multiplayer game. Imagine what a really detailed account for this transition could mean for historians in 100 years, if they could understand how one of the first massively popular MMORPG games was developed back when payphones were on street corners and "mobile phones" meant a phone in your car.

    Thanks! Also Jagex had to go back in and change constructions code as a result of the flour glitch. While doing so it’s believed the code that caused the Falador Massacre glitch was accidentally created. EDIT: Contacted a wiki staff member who helped with this video and got more information. The bug that caused the massacre was almost certainly not in the game until June 6th, 2006. Hundreds of thousands of players had been trying Construction and attending house parties long prior to June 6th. So something as simple as "getting kicked from the house while in the combat ring allows you to attack people" would have been discovered long before then. The only documented change made to Construction on June 6th was the flour update. So the flour didn't necessarily directly cause the massacre bug, however Construction's code was revamped because of it. Had the flour bug never existed, its likely the massacre could have never occoured.

    @@Mr_shmartypants That still doesn't quite make sense though. The flour glitch was due to the larder giving out the wrong item, which should be fixed just by changing the item id for that option. The pvp glitch sounds like certain values on the player aren't reset when booted from the house. I know people like to talk about Jagex spaghetti code but this seems like too much of a stretch. Keeping the attack player option which Jagex had to patch in the first instance by removing the ability to attack players outside the house, then fixing the attack option later. And Durial wasn’t the only player able to do it, he was just the main abuser who went absolutely ham with it. Something like that. I didn't believe what I was told. But it seems liked people quickly learned how to do the glitch, and I very much remember going into a combat ring and teleporting out so I could attack people, but they could not retaliate. I didn't kill anyone, I was very young tbh and it made me super anxious so I went back to the house, entered the ring again, and exited--I lost that ability to pvp at this moment. I'm guessing the bug was a player needed to "exit combat ring" to lose the ability to attack other players, so you could tele out and attack anyone!

    "Revampt the code"? I don't really follow when you say "the larder was poorly coded", when in fact it just seems the wrong item ID was used. If this was truly the only issue they were fixing, it would have been a matter of changing the item ID to that of the 'Pot of flour' instead of 'Flour'. Perhaps they did change some unrelated code that you could SPECULATE at best was the cause, but if the patch was simply for the wrong item given in the larder, that would not warrant a "revamping of code". That's literally just the changing of one integer value.

  • @Winasaurus

    He explains it awfully. Because they had to change the code to give buckets of flour instead of raw flour, they had to reset the servers for it to take effect. iirc, a player was in the house's boxing ring at the time, which enables combat so you can fight other players who step into the ring. But the reset kicked everyone out of the house, which means he skipped the boxing ring exit which turns your combat back off, so it was just left on.

So the flour didn't necessarily directly cause the massacre bug, however, Construction's code was revamped because of it. Had the flour bug never existed, it's likely the massacre could have never occurred. This is all just a theory though, and I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

    People speculate it was different on June 6th because it was supposedly never anywhere as crowded in one particular instance of a house party than in cursed you's house that day. I doubt the flour could be a cause, as it was merely about replacing one item from the larder to another, and not so much about fixing some broken spaghetti code.

I only started to play RuneScape recently and I would really like to play a “classic” 2005ish version of the game. How would one go about getting those files and playing the game from that time?

While cursed you and some other 100 + cb friends of him were ganking on him in the wildt, I spiili I made a smart move by dropping some torag's loot so he would end up with the fury he looted from Cursed you (I think fury was like 6m back then). just a memory engraved into my mind.

    My mistake! I should've clarified further. The changes made to constructions code as a result of the flour bug are what's believed to have accidentally caused the Falador Massacre. Whoever fixed the flour bug must've accidentally introduced another one, so had that flour bug never occurred its likely the massacre would've never happened.

The entire server was online and inside his house. people were waiting to log onto the server just to get to this party. my whole clan was there at the time. In the dungeon there is an option to have pvp on and off. They had to pvp on and expelled everyone from the house. If you had a dialog open when you were expelled you still had the attack option after you left the house. runehq interviewed cursed you after this happened. There should be an interview on exactly what happened
