    All this infrastructure just for one intersection? Excluding the sensors, one would think something of the order of a Raspberry PI or 2 would be enough to process the signals and control the lights accordingly.

    Although you could program something like that to work like a traffic signal controller, field equipment are usually manufactured to very specific industry standards for reasons of safety, durability, etc. For example, most of the ones I commonly have worked with are NEMA standard.

    VDOT has more traffic signals (red lights) per non-interstate highway mile than any other state in the U.S. Additionally, when VDOT finally separates the grades, it insists on building massive, sprawling Cadillac interchanges when a Ford or Chevy would be adequate and, to add insult to injury, the shitass agency STILL clutters all supporting side roads and streets with traffic signals

    Hi Byron, this process will be managed by Electrical engineers or Traffic?

  • @ByronTang

    @ByronTang

    Hi! This process is mostly managed and maintained by electric engineers/signal technicians. As a traffic engineer, I am usually involved more with settings in the controller and not as much with the other components. My job still requires me to have knowledge of how things work and what items to procure in certain situations.

    That strange, leads me to believe something could be wrong with the detection cameras. Either that or the signals are coordinated and it is holding green for one road.

    Can they program a plate number to that system for change lights

  • @ByronTang

    @ByronTang

    Жыл бұрын

    You are talking about having a specific plate number trigger the lights to change? Nope. Usually mechanisms like that rely on extra sensors/communications equipment to be installed on the vehicle (and intersection). For example fire trucks and buses could have that equipment. But it’s not done for regular vehicles.

    How far out from the cross walk is the detector? Or how far is too far where you will no longer be detected?

  • @ByronTang

    @ByronTang

    22 күн бұрын

    There is some variation, but a car stopped at the stop line without going over it too much should be more than enough to adequately get detected by the stop bar detector. Some traffic signals have multiple detectors in one lane and can detect further back.

    A motorcycle should have no problem triggering the detector. Just need to make sure it is over it. Most people don’t like putting them on a timer because then it will give green to a direction with no vehicles waiting.

Due to this I either just have to turn right and hope the next light registers, or pop out my kickstand and run to push the cross walk button.

  • @ByronTang

    If there are loops in the ground it is magnetic. If there is a video detection camera on the signal mast arms, they detect by algorithms detecting differences in pixels. Some video cameras are augmented with additional sensors (like radar) to provide even stronger detection capabilities.
