The term "Swiss Army knife" was coined by US soldiers after World War II, presumably because they had trouble pronouncing its original name, "Offiziersmesser". Sometimes, the term "Swiss Army knife" is also used metaphorically to describe usefulness, such as a software tool that is a collection of special-purpose tools. But thanks to an official ruling, only VICTORINOX and WENGER have the right to use the Swiss cross on their knives. Watch how the Swiss Army Knife is made!

How a Swiss Army Knife is made.
'Yes', a Swiss Army Knife is made in Switzerland. In Delémont to be exact, by the Wenger company. They make both VICTORINOX and WENGER brands of knives.
THE STORY OF THE SWISS ARMY KNIFE
The term "Swiss Army knife" was coined by US soldiers after World War II, presumably because they had trouble pronouncing its original name, "Offiziersmesser". Sometimes, the term "Swiss Army knife" is also used metaphorically to describe usefulness, such as a software tool that is a collection of special-purpose tools.
The Victorinox shield has remained virtually unchanged since the early days with only slight variations of size. It is mainly found as a metal inlay but sometimes is heat embossed on economy models or painted on some scale variations. The Wenger shield has gone through an evolution of many designs that range from forms of various crossbows inside of federal shields, a federal shield with a cross to different varieties of the modern form.
The "Swiss Army Knife" is being constantly copied abroad, e.g. in Germany, France, Spain, USA, Japan, China, etc., but the original quality has never been equaled. Unfortunately, however, on some of the foreign imitations the Swiss cross was added, which could be stopped thanks to the intervention of Swiss embassies and court orders. The application of the Swiss Cross was undertaken in order to confuse the public and give the impression that they were dealing with a genuine Swiss product. The official ruling, however, gives only the two Swiss manufacturers, VICTORINOX and WENGER, the right to use the Swiss cross on their knives.
On 26 April 2005 Victorinox acquired Wenger, thus turning the Swiss Army knife market into a monopoly for supplying the knives to the Swiss Army once again. However, on the consumer side Victorinox has stated that it intends to keep both brands intact.

I’ve had a Pioneer since day one of my basic army training in New Zealand. In 1999. It’s been on 5 operational tours with me, cleaned more gas parts than I care to remember, the blade is still as sharp today as it was when I got it and there’s not a speck of rust on it. I brought a huntsman for my son who is, as I write this, 5 and a half. He’ll get it when he’s 18. These tools are truly life long things that can be passed on from father (or mother for that matter!!!😉) to, in my example son with real confidence that they’ll still get the job done.

Victorinox and Wenger are proof that companies DO NOT have to outsource to China, Taiwan, wherever. These Swiss companies have remained competitive, have maintained unmatched quality AND very affordable pricing without putting these Swiss citizens out of work. I have carried Victorinox for over 40 years. I’ve purchased them for my wife, children and grandchildren; but only because they are Swiss. If they ever said Made in China on them I would never buy another.

Nobody4president true!!! They are not cheap, but the price you pay is fair for the reliability and usefulness, not like other brands that charge you ridiculous amounts of money to set apart whatever they make 'in house' from what they get from China.

I'm glad to see when they acquired Wenger in 2017, they adopted the serrated scissors with the better spring, cause it's definitely better as a cutter. The Wenger spring IMHO is a better spring than the frail spring wire spring found on the Victorinox, but the scissors must be used by the thumb only or it tends to fold the scissor away and make the spring not function correctly. Once you know this, the issue can be avoided, until you forget, that is. Maybe the Swiss can reengineer it to not fold up regardless how you use it, until you are done with it?

I have carried a Victorinox Swiss Army knife in my pocket, since I was a child. In my 41 years of living, roughly 35 years was with a SAK. In all that time, I have lost one, sent one back for repair, and am only on knife number three. I can't imagine a world without these handy tools in them. I actually use the pliers and scissors all the time.

Most of the quality knife companies have lost a large portion of their business since 9/11. Many businesses and governments agencies don't allow knives on the premises, so it's leave it home or don't bother to even purchase one. I carried some form of a pocket knife for many years, including international flights. After 9/11, security disarmed passengers from anything sharp or perceived as being used as a weapon. When the traveling public had their pocket knives, scissors and nail files taken away, a lot of those tools weren't replaced, knowing that there was a real possibility that the replacement would be confiscated if forgotten being carried on your person of carry-on. I've carried the Fisherman version of the Victorinox, a Buck 311, belt carried the Swiss Champ, and a US made Gerber military multi-tool for the real pliers. The negative part of carrying the Swiss Champ is that after family or friends see it, that they want one for a birthday or Christmas gift.

Okay.......but even though I have a Swiss Army Knife, it somehow feels like a toy. A knife of course is a tool. I do like mine. It has a large and small blade, a bottle opener with a screwdriver and that notch for skinning and bending wire, and a can opener with a smaller screwdriver. I use the large blade to open boxes, and the small screwdriver to tighten the knobs on my girlfriend's folding closet doors. At one time or another, I've used every tool. Oh yes, I forgot.....it also has a toothpick and tweezers. I always use the toothpick. It's a nice knife/tool!!

I think it is incorrect to say that the Wenger division doesn't produce knives. I think they make some of the models of Victorinox. I suspect that the knives that have the contoured handle are still produced by Wenger, but excepting for the specific Wenger knife which is sold by Victorinox, all the Wenger knives are marked as Victorinox, but they are still made in Delemont, Switzerland.

  • @Durwood71

    @Durwood71

Wenger quality has always lagged behind Victorinox, and their sales suffered because of it until the company was about to close, and Victorinox bought them. The history of the two companies is a little strange. Victorinox was the first to produce knives for the Swiss army, but the government didn't want to give them what amounted to a monopoly, so they split the contract 50/50 between Victorinox and Wenger, and the companies agreed that Victorinox would be branded "The _Original_ Swiss Army Knife" and Wenger "The _Genuine_ Swiss Army Knife".

Doesn't break? The blade will be damaged if you chop things that are just a little bit hard.

why are there secrets for the fabrication? sharpening literally is the easiest thing, if they lied and said it was a belt sander id believe them, also, their crest is probably just made with another plastic that's put in the right spot whilst the mold is forming or painted on before the film.

I made the mistake of trying an inferior Chinese knockoff Swiss Army Knife and got exactly what I deserved. It didn't hold up for six months. The case came apart, the cheap metal would not hold an edge and rust ate it up. Lesson learned. Only the real deal from now on. Is it worth it to save $5?

Actually Carl did not make the knife or design the knife. It was designed by the Swiss Army itself and German made by Wester & Co. Solingen. Thus their tagline of "The Original Swiss Army Knife" was never true at all. Unless of-course your talking about a Wester & Co. Solingen.

Hang on to your Wenger knives, they're no longer being made. Victorinox is now the sole official brand of the SAK. I was carrying a near new Wenger Soldier until I found out production has stopped. I put that sucker back in it's box for safe keeping.
