You kinda underplayed how humiliating Cesare's death was. Machiavelli explicitly made fun of Cesare for hiring a bunch of mercs and then having a surprise pikachu face when it didnt work out for him. Called it using someone else's arms, and it was a rookie move.
@weldonwin
10 ай бұрын
Well, to be fair, everyone used mercenaries at the time. Wars between city states, basically boiled down to who had the most money to hire the most mercs to intimidate the enemy and frequently never actually involved any real fighting. The Mercenaries were completely fine with this, after all, fighting was dangerous and it's not exactly much good getting paid, if you're too dead to spend it.
@weldonwin
10 ай бұрын
@@Raven_The_Huntress That was actually part of the process. City-A, Hires Mario's Wardogs and offers them 5000 Ducats to go bully City-B. City-B, then offers the Wardogs 10'000 Ducats to go burn some of City-A's farms. So, City-A offers 15'000 Ducats to raid City-B's caravans. Both sides just keep at this, offering more and more money until one side can't match the other's offer and then they capitulate. This is why the city of Urbino was so incredible, because they offered their armies as mercenaries, but once they made a contract, they never went back on it, no matter how much more they were offered. So, they got paid by the other cities to just not fight for ANYONE.

@@weldonwin That's also why the Swiss mercenaries were some of the most sought-after in Europe. Apart from the fact that they were very well disciplined in pike formations and almost never broke, they also never once went back on a contract. Swiss mercs fought to the death against overwhelming odds for causes that weren't even their own multiple times. Sending your surplus lads abroad to fight in foreign wars was actually an important part of the Old Confederation's economy.

I feel like its relevant to mention the incest rumors were started by Lucreiza's first husband, who, after a literal TRIAL where the whole Borgia family publicly alleged he was impotent, alleged that Lucrezia was having an affair with both her father and brother. It was most likely not true, there's never been any evidence to back up the rumors, but it was fueled by the fact that during the trial in which they claimed Lucrezia was a virgin, she was apparently pregnant from an affair with a servant in her husbands household. They kept her out of sight while testifying and after the trial she was sent to a convent for a little under a year, and a while after that a child was added into her fathers household. There's also never been proof that the mystery child was hers, as they always claimed he was the Pope's son, but the boys mother was never identified. If anyone is interested, the tv show "the Borgias" on showtime is very well done, and Lucrezia's life is as fascinating as her brothers imo.
I don't know if anyone else is keeping score, but I am, and this is actually the first episode of the season that Ryan didn't win! (Points-wise.) He tied with Steven, and got more points than Joyce, Ricky, and Kwesi. Zach did kick his ass though, sorry Ryan.

24:50 worth noting that Machiavelli was also writing in exile, having worked for the Florentine republic and tortured by the Medici family for doing so, with "The Prince" serving as a job resume as much as a poli-sci treatise. If you read his "Discourses on Livy" you'll see that this guy loved republics, but recognized that a dictator (think less Mussolini and more Cincinnatus) would probably be the only way to unite Italy with a standing, Italian-born army rather than foreign mercenaries. the dude wanted what we would recognize as a "modern" nation-state, but ironically is remembered as a mustache-twirling caricature of himself because he was working to maneuver his way back to his home. still not a totally great guy, but not nearly as cartoonishly callous as folks tend to portray him. the lack of assassins creed comments made me disappointed; like no one is gonna mention the apple of eden? ezio? 🤨
Fun Fact: Cesare was used as the model for Jesus in a shit ton of art commissioned by the Church. That's why he might look kinda familiar. And also why we remember Jesus as a brownish red haired white dude...even though he was Arabic.
the absolute peace i felt when zach placed the hat back on the professor,,,please bring it back
I'm getting weirdly invested in this Horse Drama. Heck, it's like a barnyard soap opera! Dorothy, what in the world are you getting up to...

Her first gut was safe and dependable. After an ordeal like his loss it's normal to need the thrill of the new guy.
This might be one of my favourites ever - Catholic church drama, wife guy jokes, Sims references? Yes please
Okay, last episode had me worried about Dorothy Ruth, but now I'm even more worried after that exchange with Elmer Walter Williams.

THE HAT IS BACK. I love that zach put it back on the professor. He's just not the same without it. Also haha ned joke, loved that.
‘we’re not doing wife guy shit’ ‘why Zach’ LMAO STOP
I saw Borgia flash up on the title card and immediately refilled my drink knowing this would be wild
It’s always a good day when the Try Guys and the Ghoul Boys do collabs :D
This era of Watcher x Try Guys is my favourite - keep it coming! P.S: Keith would really love Puppet History, just sayin' ;)

Very happy to hear his mom is in college now. Hope she enjoys it.

lmao i love the professor opening the lesson with one of Machiavelli’s most famous quotes and they were still like, yeah no clue who this writer is, marco, mario
Lore I didn't expect: The Professor confirming he is "definitely a top"
Zach wore that hat so well that I forgot it was a PUPPET'S HAT the whole time.
You know that whole joke about popes and weapons and how the final song was sung by the pope hat? Fun fact: in italian the pope hat is called "mitra" which, by coincidence, is also the word for machine gun.
"were not doing wife guy shit" "why zach" gold
awesome to see the real life history of the main antagonists from assassins creed 2 and brotherhood! love this show!

8:22 this bit killed me 😭 Ryan always just says the most unhinged shit and then we all move on
“Tickle him Zach, tickle him…with the feather Zach” 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I thought Cesare and Lucretzia sounded familiar. They're from the Ruining History episode of nasty popes.

Finally. All my years of playing Assassin's Creed have prepared me for this.
Zach saying safari yarmulke makes me wonder why we don’t have other hats like it. Imagine a spindle yarmulke or a top hat yarmulke.
"We're not doing wife guy shit" "Why Zach?" I fucking spit out my drink lmaooooo

If I had a nickel for every song I've heard about the Borgia family, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice. (Horrible Histories fans for the win)
Lucrezia's appearance got me excited if only because "How To Get My Husband On My Side" is heavily inspired by the Borgias family!!

I feel like by marriage #3, no matter how pretty Lucrezia was, the deaths of her former husbands would have given him just a bit of pause.

You know, people always say this, and MY history class involved re-enactments and jelly beans, and we still didn't talk about obscure papal conflicts. Sometimes there's just too much history for one class, I guess.

Zach always kills it on this show. Should’ve had him for Julie D’aubigny; he would’ve given her the respect she deserves.
me hearing Cesare Borgia got me remembering the good old days of assassins creed brotherhood
“We’re not doing wife guy shit” “Why is that?” 💀💀
