I hope you're recovering well, Tyler. I don't want to rain on your parade but in all honesty if lectrons were so great then the bikes would come with them. They're simpler and cheaper to manufacture than the Keihins which are complex and highly refined. I get that for "mechanical idiots" as you refer to yourself it's all black magic and a lot easier to bolt on something that's already been dialed in to deliver reasonable a/f ratio. Agreed, there's a lot to adjust on the stock carb. And it's not simple as it all interacts. But for those with a mindset to dominate and a background in physics and mechanics it becomes intuitive. Sounds like yours had an issue with needle/seat sealing and/or float height. I dialed mine in and have instant smooth predictable throttle response, smooth cruising, gotten over 36 mpg, worst of 32 mpg, average over 34 mpg, range exceeds 180 miles. That's over an altitude difference from sea level to 4600' above, temps from in the forties to the nineties (altitude is cooler, somewhat offsetting the density difference due to altitude alone) and over four years. I would take it to Utah as is and not be surprised if it's good enough without any further leaning. So that's the flip side of the coin.

Absolutely, and with the ease of adjustment to the power jet / metering rod on the Electron Billetron you can get different power variations from the carb. This combined with changes to power valve spring options and preload tensions makes power variations endless. I love it.

I have a 17’ TE300, I put a Lectron from Slavens on my bike, fouled a plug about 10 miles into a trail, one phone call to Slavens and a trail side adjustment and it’s been perfect ever since. None of this was lectrons fault. I installed it and went out, not smart I know, but simple adjustment on metering rod and done. Would certainly buy another! Love your videos, if I ever get the time, I’m coming to Utah to ride.

Great video and so many of the main points why I spent the cheddar for my Lectron you hit on. No jetting for elevations, highly tunable and not blocked off and limited like so many stock carbs are now, great reliability and simple function, no sensors, wires or other electrical gremlins screwing up your ride when your 50 miles from the truck. Gas mileage would just be a bonus as my 4.7 gallon tank already lasts forever

Amen brother, I love my Lectron. I did a test when I came down to ride with you a couple years ago with my 2016 Beta 300 RR Race edition. The second day we went to Warner valley and did 85 miles. I didn't add any fuel during the ride. Wen I got home I fully drained the tank. (Left it on the bike though) I had .68 gal of fuel left from a 2.5 gal tank so the bike consumed 1.82 gal over 85 miles. The gave me 46.7 mpg. Not bad for a 300 2 stroke. I've ridden with you down at 3000+/_ ft in St.George and up to 11000 on top of skyline drive in central Utah without a single adjustment. In fact after my small initial adjustment six months before I came down there and I've not touched it since. For me the Lectron does everything I could hope for and more. Even better, I keep the simplicity and reliability of a 2 stroke.

Back in the early to mid 70's I apprenticed at a small motorcycle repair business for a few years and I remember the owner praising the Lectron carb and it's benefits. He ended up purchasing one for his Maico 250. Being a motorcycle mechanic ended up not being my chosen profession so I never really got to learn about the Lectron. I'll have to do some research for a possible DR build in the future.

Excellent review as always! I've been running a 30mm Lectron on my 200 EXC for the past few years and love it. I've set my bike up as a poor man's Beta Xtrainer and it works beautifully. I did try the 4-stroke carb on a plated WR450 I had briefly and while it ran well, it made the bike feel like a DRZ400 with the stock CV carb. The power was so smooth that it seemed to take away from the performance that the pumper carb provides. Just something to keep in mind for those thinking about replacing a pumper carb with one. Those who have replaced a CV carb for the Lectron report being quite happy with the increased throttle response and lack of needing to dial in a pumper carb.

A well setup stock carb can actually get as good or better mileage than a lectron. One of my buddies has a lectron and my bike has over half a gallon left when he runs out. For the altitude, I ride from 5000ft to over 12,000ft regularly with no jetting changes. That said the lectron or smart carb are solid choices for those who lack the desire or abilities to fix the stock carb.

a stock carb is never jetted correctly. elevation changes or not, you still have temperature and humidity to deal with, constantly. spring, summer, fall, even morning to afternoon changes your fuel air ratio. I installed a Lectron on a 2016 300 xc and could not believe how well the bike ran. like I had always dreamed of it running. And this was previously with a JD Jetting kit, which was better, but the Lectron is a total game changer. the air boot can be easily trimmed for the 38H series, the new Billetron 38 is shorter, no need to trim the air boot

I really like my stock CV carb. I thought about a Lectron for a long time, but my XR650L has been great from sea level up to about 7,000 feet. I'll be testing it in Colorado for the BDR, so we'll see how it goes. I have also read that the XR650L specifically doesn't benefit a whole lot from fuel economy or power because the powerband is so wide that you are sacrificing power somewhere in the rev range. I think researching the benefits for your specific machine is worth it. The XR didn't have a lot of hard data for the lectron and $300 or so is quite a bit of a leap to make for something I may not end up liking. That said, I have read that the Lectron is great for racing and especially great on two strokes. I think if you change elevation and you don't have a CV carb as stock, the Lectron is probably a good idea. Thanks for the video. It was informative and unbiased. It's good to hear success stories about the Lectron.

leaking with no petcock cannot be coccectly jetted no matter what you say :) the level in the carb is newer constant with such and you are either rich or to rich which is why you had the huge fuel consumption. the stuttering happens when there is some 30-40% excess in fuel delivered. :) re, counterbalanced 2t is a thing from the past for road and rad race bikes. on dirt bikes it was not used as "weight saving" but it also reduces power of the engine etc. its happy/sad that KTM had finally decided to implement that ancient technology

I'll be interested in your thoughts if you put one on your DRZ. I got one and I have a vacuum lock problem - the air flow through the carb is strong enough to jamb the slide against the housing at idle making the throttle stick between idle and around 1/4 throttle. It makes it really hard to shift and to lug on trails. I have the 3x3 mod and a FMF Q4 on it. I sent it back to Lectron, they worked on it, returned it, and the issue is unresolved. Other than that, it is an improvement over the stock Mikuni, but I wouldn't say it's as big a difference as what you're describing for a 300 2T.

Lectron carbs come with terrible throttle cables, throw them away, the float bowl seals leak slowly... but once you get the right tuning and rig up the right cable they are solid besides a slight drop in bottom end power early

My Lectron isn't slow off the line. Clutch less wheelies on a KLR 650 geared for the Hwy. Matter of fact Electrons are well known for having great throttle response... If you don't know how to tune YMMV.

All of his comments of the downside of the lectron isn't true of the new Billitron carb. The choke is where it should be and it's the same size as stock, watch the vid I made on my channel.

@@beauhawk1146 you're probably right. The bottom end with a lectron is quite disappointing. The SmartCarb produces great bottom end though it has its issues too. More good then bad though.

I don't know from all your smoke and mirrors-the Lectron carb is the most expensive carb on the market and the results are in. If tuned perfectly you can get them to perform as good as the stock carb with just a few flat spots and 2500 rpm. Bottom line is they are a tremendous waste of money. They don't deliver anything near what the manufacturer promises.
