    Anti-personnel mines aren't designed to kill necessarily. They are intended to injure. That way you take out more than one. The medical folks, the stretcher bearers, etc. Also, they have a disastrous effect on morale. They are really horrible weapons.

    During the 1982 Falklands war during a night move we were ordered to move into an known marked Argentinian mine field which had been marked. We were behind in securing a start line for the Marines to attack Mount Harriet. We were well into the minefield when a Marine stood on an anti personnel mine which blew his foot off. Another soldier went to his aid and triggered another mine. Neither was killed but I won’t forget their screams of pain in the darkness. The destination of the Mines alerted the Argentinians who then opened up a artillery barrage. Eventually the royal engineers cleared a way out for us and the attack on Mount Harriet went ahead but behind schedule. In the same war a mate of mine brother Brian Milne 3 Para, lost his leg in another mine field during the attack by 3 Para on Mount Langdon. The problem with minefields is that they remain long after a war and innocent children are maimed or killed long after.

I believe this was in Asia (Possibly Viet Nam) to clear those that remained from the war, but were still deadly. I've been told of anti-tank mines that don't detonate, until a certain number of contacts in mid-convoy.

    land mine, or landmine, is an explosive weapon concealed under or camouflaged on the ground, and designed to destroy or disable enemy targets, ranging from combatants to vehicles and tanks, as they pass over or near it.Such a device is typically detonated automatically by way of pressure when a target steps on it or drives over it, although other detonation mechanisms are also sometimes used.[2] A land mine may cause damage by direct blast effect, by fragments that are thrown by the blast, or by both. Landmines are typically laid throughout an area, creating a minefield[3] which is dangerous to cross. The use of land mines is controversial because of their potential as indiscriminate weapons. They can remain dangerous many years after a conflict has ended, harming civilians and the economy. Seventy-eight countries are contaminated with land mines and 15,000-20,000 people are killed every year while many more are injured. Approximately 80% of land mine casualties are civilians, with children as the most affected age group. Most killings occur in times of peace.[4] With pressure from a number of campaign groups organised through the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, a global movement to prohibit their use led to the 1997 Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction, also known as the Ottawa Treaty. To date, 164 nations have signed the treaty, but these do not include China, the Russian Federation, or the United States.[5]

    @@Stray03 Step off mines exist to some extent, a few bouncing and bounding mines are meant to propel only when the pressure is off. Once the pressure is release, the mine is propel into the air than explode, which allows for a larger blast/shrapnel area. They are time-delay though, so the mine will go off after some seconds even if there is still pressure, but just enough time to fk around with the enemy. Bouncing and bounding mines are the worst, because they are meant to mess with the enemy. Most might see someone step on the mine and get instantly blow up, and they will think it is just bad luck. However, what if a group has to leave one of their own behind to die because they cannot de-mine the bouncing/bounding mine? My come-to-Jesus moment, working as a security contractor for deminers. I stepped on a Pmn2, but nothing happened. It took 40 long minutes for the Sapper deminer to work his way into me. Then he discovered that it was stacked on top of a TM46, 30 min later, I stepped onto that sapper's boot prints. For whatever reason we will never know.. whoever set those mines, did not pull out the arming pin on the Pmn2

    Im was trained as an assault pioneer with the Royal Green Jackets.....anyi personnel mines are designed not to kill but to severely injury many people. Thecreason for this is if someone is killed....they're often left behind. If the person is injured it effects that persons friend/s they then need to be tended too..... medical help, evac, etc etc. So that one person could take 15+ more people to look after them.....taking all these people and resources out of the battle.

    Hello! Great work on video. The explanation of the firing pin is not accurate. The firing pin is compressed and resting on a catch or sear. When the pressure plate, when enough pressure is pushed onto it and the bottom of the landline, the firing pin will become unlatched from its sear, and the spring will depress, striking a primer which detonates the explosive compound.

  • @DERWALDRUFT

    @DERWALDRUFT

    2 жыл бұрын

    So now I have to contradict you. the firing pin? did you even see the size and mass of the firing pin? everything stays as it is here and there is no shaking! the firing pin stays as it is and the mine stays where it is!

    The firing pin or striker is the most important and dangerous piece to these mechanical detonation explosives. The firing pin or striker in these devices are all the same size.

  • @bob_the_bomb4508

    @bob_the_bomb4508

    It depends on the design of the mine. Not all mines employ the ‘cocked striker’ design you describe.

    I recall of a type of AP mine that doesn't explode on direct pressure, but when the pressure is taken off again. I've heard stories of guys having survived stepping on such a mine by keeping the pressure on whilst putting on something heavy yet stagnant before then stepping off the mine themselves. Any thoughts on that?
