This video instantly reminded me of when the Norwegian government made a map of "no-fly zones" for civilian drones, inadvertently revealing where each and every single secret installation was located. Or at the very least, revealed where a *lot* of them are located. They might've kept the super-top-secret ones hidden, Idk. IIRC, there's also a bus or tram stop near Oslo monikered "Natoanlegget", meaning "The NATO facility/installation", which is meant to be a secret location. 🤦‍♀️

That's a massive failure purely on the part of the service members. I was overseas when Snapchat released their location sharing feature and we were all briefed on what a massive security threat that was for us and that we were absolutely not allowed to use it as well as reminded that we were not to ever share our locations with other apps or people. Worth noting as well, I'm pretty confident the Italian base in Djiboutian isn't a secret. There are many nations based there (US, Britain, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Japan, China, India) as part of a global effort to combat piracy off the Horn of Africa as well as terrorist organizations in the region such as Al-Shabaab.

What there should have actually been is a standing order that if an app, any app at all, asks for your location data and you're in a classified location, you have to say "no" because it is already leaking classified information even if it doesn't then get put onto the internet. Seems kinda obvious to me but hey, I'm not the one running clandestine US nonsense, so what do I know.

@@asiamies9153 philosophical debate: on the contrary, "the individual soldiers" is one of the most vital parts of "the military" :) That aside, what I meant was, that they should have been forbidden (ideally also with explanation of the reasoning and security implications) by their security officers to use these kind of apps (and you can't argue that a "proper discipline and security standards" is not a part of the military).

Same was in around 8 years and if they can do a power point they will. It’s simply to show numbers and say they informed you so their not liable or they can bend you over when convenient. Suicide prevention and sexual assault get pounded down on you but does anything actually get done to improve the situation.... no but you signed a sheet saying you were taught about it and they act confused on how things could of went wrong. Some great people in the military but largely it’s a pc joke.

I remember having a briefing on OPSEC but I could only hear half of it thanks to the noise a U2 made as it took off. You could hear that from miles around. Also the noise a chinook helicopter makes doesn’t exactly blend in.

Sound plausible. Over here in The Netherlands, at the city center where I work, only recently I noticed a plaque next to an inconspicious looking steel access panel in the ground. I thought it was some sort of freight lift for underground storage of the nearby large stores. But no, it also reads: "Cold War Era Nuclear Shelter."

God I love bricks. So much work put into a fundamental part of humanity

I was actually stationed somewhere where this was an issue. We were briefed that fitbits were banned at this duty station because the gps was able to accurately map out the inside of highly secretive facilities. Not a huge deal but the military wasn’t too happy when they found out. I also know about a story where a female soldier posted a photo on her Snapchat story during a training mission. Well, the OPFOR saw this and used the heat map on Snapchat to discover her location. Then they notionally shelled her location killing her entire unit.
