How A Canal Lock Works.

This week I do my level best to explain how a lock works for you. we talk about the parts of the lock first then go on to talk about the way a lock works as a whole.
A lock raises or lowers the boat at the point when the water level changes. Going up or down hill.

Got it! Thank you Jasmin. Could you just repeat the part after Ahoy? One thing, rambunctious dogs, need to be kept from the edges, as once a hind leg goes beyond the edge, they tend to slide in backwards. They can't usually anticipate or recognize this danger. Watching tourists trip over the crescent footholds, however, provides endless entertainment. The day you wore plaid, the light was really beautiful.

this video wasnt about safty, I could litterally make a whole seperate video on lock safty, this is really just how the lock works. but its true you need to be very careful on locks. I so agree the light was really beautiful that day , so blessed in the winter!

Just a hint on security, avoid locking in a thunderstorm, some 10 years ago a lockie on the Göta Kanal in Sweden got hit by the lightening of a thunderstom and killed.

Me too ! I'm getting my first narrowboat in a few weeks. I'm going to take a residential mooring for the first year and take lessons first. Only just realised though... how do I get my boat from where it is now with the previous owners to my new mooring! ???

Hi,I really enjoyed that video.I was wondering how the water level is maintained upstream as that seems to be where the water comes from during both operations. Is there just so much water in the system that it doesn't matter? Thanks for taking the time.

I love how you Brits don't paint the ground to remind people that there is a tripping hazard... People should know where they are walking... Truly I wish my family had stayed in the UK.

Very informative, the engineering is amazing when you look at the age of the locks. I was watching an old show, The Graham Norton Show 14x01 @ 6 min 30 sec of the clip on youtube a famous actor Harrison Ford talks about going narrow boating. I thought it was interesting.

If 2 boats arrive at a Lock at the same time, one going Down Stream & one Up Stream, is there a protocol that gives one right of way or does it just depend on how the Lock is set?

You didn’t add if the lock is set against you , you should look to see if a boat is coming up/ down the cut before filling or draining the lock to save water

A + on a simple walk thru of function and method of moving boat thru lock ,, thanks , I think i remmber seeing some gates that do not have Paddles/sluices in the gates , the sluices are built in to the canal wall , is there a reason or spefic canal or time frame when a sluice built into the wall was used ?? or was it just the builders choice on which to use -- on the gate or built into wall ?? And if there is Enough of a Elevation change from one lock to the next would would one sluice only be used to shift water in one direction ? , or am i imagining more of a problem than there actually is ?

to be honest I am not sure the water does only go in one direction, there are water resovoirs where water is added to they system from (by the canal and river trust)
