How 40,000 Tons Of Brazil Nuts Are Collected Deep In The Amazon Rainforest | Big Business

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

#Brazil
Brazil nuts are one of the most sustainable nuts. They're not grown on farms. They're collected in the rainforest after they drop naturally off wild trees. While the nuts support Indigenous tribes' livelihoods, collectors have a tough job. They have to hike deep into the jungle, avoiding deadly falling nuts and wildlife, all to haul 100-pound loads back out. And now their industry is at risk because of low prices for their nuts and illegal clear-cutting of the rainforest. We visit the Apiaká tribe in Mato Grosso, Brazil, to see how they're using Brazil nuts as a weapon against deforestation.

I’d much rather pay these harvester $19.99 for 16 oz that’s what I just paid at Walmart. I hope these guys can save forest.

I'd rather pay $24.99 if the harvesters get a large share of that (I understand that the trbasport etc. needs their 4.99 or so) - considering the dangerous environment, the workers should be compensated for harvesting these delicious nuts.

No, it isn't. It contains remnants of ancient agriculture, but it's not a "big ancient farm". Thee's no evidence to even prove that it's entirely created by ancient farming.

That is a complete lie being spread around. There are hundreds of very delicate species of Orchids which humans could NOT have developed and planted, but which grow all over the Amazon and would die and become extinct if their forest was cut down.

@@tparker2095 If it's true that the indigenous amazonians' ancestors deliberately spread brazilnut seeds around to ensure that there would be more of them to grow a staple food of theirs, then in a way, it is a bit of early farming.

It's a shame Brazilian government do not protect the indegenous territory. On the contrary, each time more land is being invaded by agriculture and cows. Give them what is their from the ages before! Including the merits of all etnoscience!

The Math is wrong: They get paid $1.60 per Kilo (2 pounds). There are 907 Kilos in 1 ton, meaning they get just over $1450 per ton of nuts.

If any harvesters are reading this, I just paid $30USD/kg (or $30000 USD/tonne) for these nuts here in Canada. Find a way to export your product to Canada or the USA. Don't sell domestically.
