How 1.1 Billion Flowers Are Imported And Inspected In The US For Valentine's Day | Big Business

Fresh roses have as little as 48 hours to get cut in Colombia, flown to Miami, and inspected by customs for harmful bugs before the flowers wilt. In the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day, the number of flowers imported through Miami triples.

Fun little fact: a big reason they avoid trying to handle the flowers is because the flower believes it’s being pollinated by a bee, so it then believes it can finally die. Same roses, same

For those wondering how amazing it smells to work with flowers, I worked in a flower shop for several months, and I could only smell the flowers when I first got into work, but after a couple minutes I got used to the smell and couldn't really smell it anymore unless I got super up close to the flower. You also have to remember that working with flowers means that you are working with a lot of green waste, such as stems that are being cut off of flowers or extra leaves that are being stripped, and that stuff STINKS. It decomposes really fast, and dealing with those trash cans at work are a nightmare.

I'm a former florist, working at the green house during valentines and mother's Day was intense. We did a week of over time and the last two days before Valentine's and mother's Day we would rock 16 hr days. Even going to auction was cut throat, people would get super heated and hundreds of thousands of dollars would be spent per hour.

Those flowers are then bid on so if florists get a cheaper batch, you got the beat up withered batch. To get the best, buy from a florist you do business with regularly, pick flowers in person or go to a high end florist who caters to the affluent-they always get the best flowers because they're willing to pay higher wholesale prices(yes it will be more expensive for you but you get the best flowers that last the longest). Those mass online retailers will just send you dead flowers at their cheapest cost-take your money, smile and run.

Flowers last much longer than 48 hrs from cutting. When we receive at a flower shop, they are usually there in 1 week, and last another 2 weeks. The flowers are "put to sleep" and packed with ice.

I know so many people say that giving flowers on Valentine's day is a waste of material but I mean come on. Flowers are a sign of love they don't last long yet the memories of your crush giving you flowers is gonna linger in your mind until you grow old. If flowers can make good memories, then wouldn't it be best to enjoy those memories and cherish them instead of saying that the flowers just get thrown away? I never had a partner and yet I can understand that. Step your game up millennials
