The Rockets are banking on a star becoming available next year and honestly that’s the right move if they want to go star hunting it’s best for them to wait until Jalen or Sengun to go into restricted free agency. It’s the same with what the Sixers did with Maxey. Sengun knows this as long as he continues to ball out his he will get his money. The Sixers just locked in Embiid, Maxey, and George at pretty much that amount leaving little room for other players. Yet, they signed several more pushing themselves high above it. As for the Rockets, it you take each players contribution (pts, rbs, and asts) and allocate the $170 mil, this is what you get Reed - $10 mil rookie Sengun (21/9/5) - $27 Green (20/5/4) - $22 FVV (17/4/8) - $22 Smith (14/8/2) - $18 Brooks (13/3/2) - $14 Whitmore (12/4/1) - $13 Eason (10/7/1) - $14 Thompson (10/7/3) - $15 Adams (9/12/2) - $18 This does not include the remaining five on the team. Obviously, as a backup center, Adams is not going match his starting numbers and there are other factors that affect their contributions like defense, etc. But strictly off of points, rebounds, and assists, this is a good valuation. Further, playing with good players costs you points, rebounds, and assists as you sacrifice for the team to win. Now looking at the Sixers, Embiid is 35/11/6 or a total of $52 mil (what he is worth). Maxey 24/4/6 or $34 mil (less than he is getting paid. George is 24/5/4 or $33 mil (less than he is getting paid). What does this mean for the Rockets? None of the above are worth a max contract. I don't begrudge FVV or Brooks getting theirs in free agency. They are bridge players. But if Sengun and Green think they are suppose to get max contracts, they have another thing coming. Right now they are not giving max production. Based on the above and their potential Sengun is worth $30 mil and Green $25 mil. As for Whitmore and Eason, they need to work on sharing the ball. Thompson is probably the most complete player on the team. With a three point shot, he would be all pro one day. Smith has sacrificed his game for the good of the team. He easily could be a 20/10 player. Brooks is paid about right. FVV is about $10 mil over his value, but again, he is a short term bridge to the future. If the Rockets want to win a championship, they are going to have to be realistic in their salary demands.

Mathematically, it fits for the Rockets to wait for the next summer to extend... but we have to include the player's satisfaction and will they be ok with waiting for a whole year while others are getting their money now. Lots can happen until next summer... injuries for example. I really hope Rafael Stone knows what he's doing regarding human factor. He better have a great game in regards to explaining them.

Rockets will offer Sengun a maximum contract next year, but look what will happen then? Sengun will probably want to be with Lakers, a much more popular team, and coach JJ Redick, who admires him a lot. At this point the Rockets will just have to reap what they sow and offer maximum to the unstable Jalen Green.

That max extension for Franz Wagner seems too much to me. Is he really worth that? Giving players the max every time seems unwise to me. Senguin worth it I think. Not sure Jalen is at this point. Mailbag topic: Win-now mode (trade) vs organic growth. It's arguable that all legitimate playoff contenders in the West are just as good as they were last year or better. Teams we are considering "fringe" or in the same category as the Rockets got better this off-season as well...Kings made moves, Pels made moves, Griz with Ja. Teams who havent made splash moves are established star studded teams, i.e. Phoenix, GS (lost KT), Clippers (lost PG), Lakers. Ps. GS is lurking and looking to add Markkanen, which would be a huge blow to the Rockets playoff chances. Lauri and KD are both legitimate offensive upgrades as the PF position over Jabari. Neither have the defensive versatility/upside. Both would require Jabari, salary match, and future assets to acquire (ps. Jabari and assets would clear in trade for Markkanen). While Jabari is a core asset, how is the organization willing to gamble diminishing playoff chances for the sake of player loyalty and organic growth? Especially considering this off-season is so critical and making the playoffs next year is so vitally important. Maybe this is a public perception thing, but PR-wise, missing the playoff is a bad look for the organization. Playoff chances currently seems like a coin flip, maybe even less then 50/50 chance for next year. Yes, I understand Rockets in theory can make no moves, make or miss the playoffs, extend either one or both Sengen (yes please) and/or Jalen (would like as well), and star hunt next off-season - Booker or bust. Being complacent and going ALL in on the Suns demise seems like a MASSIVE risk. Getting PHX future picks was a fine move, all good. But for next season front office seems totally convinced of PHX's downfall and one or two other teams flopping out of the top 10 (i.e. GS or Lake). Although overpaying would hurt, both Markkanen and KD represent and translate to wins. Of the core 6, Jabari has a higher floor but lower ceiling. He an above average shooter, good defender, good rebounder, in the Al Horford mold. Great player, and do believe in Jabari's long term success, he just has NO HANDLE and will unlikely ever elite shooter/play finisher or have elite touch (see KD workout video). I hope I'm wrong. But when you compare him to core companions, he's the one who stands out not having one or two elite traits, i.e. Jalen has elite burst, wiggle, hot hand / Sengun is a magician / Tari, ball hawk, box +/- demon / Amen, swiss army knife, dynamic, smart / Reed, hopefully, IQ, grit, sniper. Jabari and Cam are my trade assets to go after most sensible and "getable" being Markkanen. He's younger than KD plus PHX isn't willing to take this season. Again, I bring up Markkanen time over because GS landing him would mean GS is firmly in the playoffs picture. He's also a much better player then Jabari right now, maybe Jabari in 3-5 years. Jabari doesn't seem to fit a win now timetable when his peak potential is years away and there's not an elite trait to lean on. Pt. 2 of the topic are what teams are we projecting to slide from West top 10? Is it really PHX? What if they stay healthy and make a decent playoff push? I guarantee they think they can. Is it Clippers? Maybe, what is they stay healthy and some odd psychological addition by subtraction thing happens? LA? Sure a year older, but still a Lebron led team. GS? What would we think of them if they added Markkanen? Kings? DeRozan pickup might work out. Got better. Pels, got better. Memphis, got better (Ja back). So it's down to Rockets, Lakers, and GS, in my opinion, all vying for the 10th seed. And we are making our beds holding on to this core and betting against LeBron and Curry. It's tough. Please consider trading Jabari and pick(s) for Lauri. Lock down Sengun. Eventually lock down Tari, Amen. Jalen, Cam, TBD. Pick up Fred option, or if Reed is ready even better. Dillion can walk (or trade asset).

Cam Whitmore should start at the 3… he’s taller than Jalen Brown by half an inch. And JB starts at the 3 for the Celtics

Rafael stone is one of the smartest GM in the NBA right now.If had given Jalen a rookie extension, it could means rewarding inconsistency which could backfire. Now Jalen seeing some of his rookie class get rookie extension would put more fire in his belly to play consistently. Secondly it was good decision to not give sengun rookie extension even though he deserves it, bcos such decision would psychologically demoralize Jalen and would affect his performance next season.

@@MrKaiowayears, but he will be restricted. It means what ever offer he accepts, Rocket has the right to match that contract. So he is very likely to stay for the next 5 years. Unless he sign the cap holder contract for 1 year, then he is free to go off wherever.

That Lavine trade sounds like something. Brooks Tate and Landell for Lavine and 1 1st round pick. This might be a trade that might work. Might. Future 2nd rounder for Kessler. And maybe Kennard or Beasely.

Jackson, just count how many times you said “He deserved it” for Sengun. I understand the business aspect of the decision but how about the other teams who did the right thing for their players ? I think Jalen will blossom this year. I think March was real. I have watched this guy every since the Rockets got him and he looked like he started to figure out some things last year. Ime is a different kind of coach than Jalen has ever played for. last year Ime disassembled Jalen's game and reassembled it in a way that it could impact winning. if Jalen does blossom as expected having brused his ego now may lead to bad feelings down the line. blaming it on cap flexibility allows the Rockets the best of both worlds. cap flexibility and no brused ego's should things pan out with Jalen. as for Jabari and KD workout.....Jabari will NEVER be anything like KD. he lacks the skill, the quickness and the basketball IQ. so I don't know how much that can help him unless they are working on that corner 3 he can never seem to hit. Lol. for those who say there are no stars to chase next year. Why should we care about caressing Jalen's ego? As long as Jalen's shooting & is low, he cannot be trusted. Also his decision making is so out of logic. He may a 6th man coming from the bench, at the most.

Stone is playing it correctly. No one deserves a max contract if the team can't make the playin. Cunningham may prove to be worth a max contract, but he hasn't shown it yet. Sure he is in the top 25 in scoring, but only because the rest of the team can't score. Put Smith on the Pistons and he is easily a 20+ scorer. That is the problem with handing out max contracts to guys like Cunningham and Wagner. Heck, Wagner was not even the leading scorer on the Magic. Next year, they will be giving Paolo a max contract and keep in mind that Smith out rebounds him. At this rate, the Magic will be second apron and not a contender. Green has the talent for a max contract. Just not the consistence. Let's see what he can do. Same for Sengun. If they can lead the Rockets to a fifty win season and a top four seed, then perhaps. But I think it will be more of a team effort with Eason, Smith, Amen, Cam, Reed, FVV and Brooks all contributing. This is why each needs to put aside their personal interests and win a championship. Otherwise these young players will move on and never win a championship. But they will be richer.

Jalen green was not as bad as you say he was at the beginning of the season. He wasn't lights out, obviously... but he wasn't awful. He showed that he could step up when you need him, especially once sengun got hurt. He deserves that extension.

Rafael Stone doesn't provide the Rocket fans excitement. He is boring, no blockbuster trade or something. It's just dull, it isn't very interesting. We don't have something to look forward to. And he gets an extension so we are going to die with boredom for more years.lols

Ok you can look this up if you want to. I love AL P. But... when the Rockwts put their #2 pick #3 pick and #4 pick in the starting line up we won. We won a lot. I have never seen a 2, 3, and 4 in the line up at the same time ever. I've been watching basketball all my life. I might be wrong, but I don't think so. They fit together. Won against bum teams that were not even trying to win like early season cause it was end of the season tanking time. Played Blazers multiple times Wizards multiple times Jazz multiple times OKC(No Shai) And like without their best players cause it was end of the season like no Lauri for Jazz for ex. end of season full G-leaguers Wizards one game no Kuzma no Pool. Excusing Jalen bricking open shots and being analytically one of the worse starters in the league for the past 3 years as being “not playing the style he thrives in” is a stretch. He has not been good consistently. We can’t have a shooting guard that can’t shoot on the team.
