    Edward VII made sure he had a warm relationship with his children as this was denied him as a child of Victoria and Albert. When he died, George V said "I have lost my best friend and the best of fathers, I never had a cross word with him". Such a shame then that George reverted back to the Hanoverian stereotype where his children were terrified of him and had difficult relations with him.

    Edward V11 was very close to his son George V; They were more like brothers than father and son. He was also lax with his children, telling his mother, Queen Victoria that 'If children are treated too severely they grow up to fear the ones they ought to love'.

  • @retroguy9494

    All of this is very true mate. But we also know that George V abused both David AND Bertie. Isn't it strange how generations work. Victoria and Albert were abusive to the first Bertie. He became a good father and grandfather. George abused David and Bertie. Bertie (George VI) was a wonderful father to Lilibet and Margaret. While not necessarily abusive, Queen Elizabeth was frosty to her children and when young, did not see them too much. We now know King Charles was a good father. It seems like the generations flip back and forth. But what doesn't make sense is why someone who was loved and treated well would want to be abusive to their OWN children?

    @@retroguy9494 This is what I've always wondered too.. George V and his siblings were raised well by both his mother (Alix of Denmark) and father (Edward VII), so why was he so horrible to his own children? I wonder if he thought if he was raised too comfortably, and wanted to impose discipline onto his children. Anyways, his behaviour would be classified as abusive now and it affected how all his children grew up to be.

  • @retroguy9494

    @retroguy9494

    Жыл бұрын

    @@trademark5124 I often wonder about George V's mental state. His grandmother Queen Victoria was prone to fits of rage over nothing. It used to disturb Prince Albert, especially early in their marriage. At one point, aides to the Prince thought she might have had mental illness like her grandfather George III. George V had some really weird ideas. For instance he did not believe in Royals receiving an education as he thought academics was 'beneath' them. As we all know, he was euthanized in the end by his doctor but he WAS dying of lung disease. But supposedly, he was also out of his head and rambling several days beforehand. Which has nothing to do with lung disease. His father died of the same thing and was totally in control of his mind up to the end. Yes, it would be considered abuse today and it IS abuse. But I still wonder about why some people who were loved and raised well abuse their children. I'm one of them. My mother was VERY abusive until the day she died. Yet, my grandmother was a good, kind and loving woman who raised all her children with love and caring. My father was also abusive but not as bad as my mother. But HIS mother was very loving as well (although she died before I was born). His step father was a good man too and treated him and his brother like they were his own children. So who knows?

    Back then Royals could only marry a future Queen who was of royal decent, an aristocrat, and a virgin. That left the very shallow pond with very few fish in it. Even Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip were cousins. Even Charles who is now King Charles the lll was not permitted to marry the woman he loved, Camilla. Instead he had to Mary an aristocrat from Royal descent that was also a virgin which is why he was basically forced to marry Diana Spencer. He never loved Diana, he loved Camilla, but Camilla was a commoner and had had previous boyfriends.

    This is sad. Wallis never wanted to marry Edward. The letters they discovered from Wallis to her husband and those from him to her were heart breaking. Edward had an unhealthy obsession with her. People described it as if he was Posessed. He was scary obsessive. She was still in love with her husband. When she told Edward she didn't want him that he needed to fulfill his duties as King he refused. He told her he would kill himself if she didn't marry him. She felt she had no choice. She didn't want that blood on her hands so she married him and they stayed married till he died. What a price to pay for what was supposed to be a short lived affair.

    Yes, thanks to Mr. Al-Fayed who purchased their old house in France and discovered those letters and made them semi-public we now know she wasn't really in love with him. She also described him as being 'child like' rather than acting like an adult. But we MUST acknowledge the truth about her. She wanted to be Queen of England. That was her ultimate goal. She was also an adulterer having cheated on her husband with more than one man before. She was no saint. As for Edward, we now know that the Simpson marriage was a ruse. British intelligence knew that he was a Nazi sympathizer. The people who loved him did not know this but the government didn't want him as King. They saw the trouble brewing with Germany. The denial of the morganatic marriage was just the excuse they needed. They were right too. We now know of his pact with Hitler after the abdication to restore him to the throne if Germany was successful in taking over England. Queen Elizabeth wanted to mend fences after her father died and was going to offer him something in the government. Her ministers advised against it and showed her the secret files. She was horrified.

The same argument used to include that fact could be used to justify the inclusion of, like, one dozen or one million other facts. The Stuarts also had close ties to France. The only time the royal family was decidedly not French, during centuries of being their hereditary enemies was under the the Hanoverian dynasty. I think this emphasis on the origins of royal blood is over hyped and over emphasized. Strict rules regarding stature of potential spouses, the fractured nature of the HRE meant Germans dominated the pool, and once Catholics were banned the Germans completely monopolized the pool. Germany was not united until 1871 and was not a natural enemy of Britain until Cousin Willy started building ships. Prior to that German states were often alligned with Britain against the French, the traditional enemy.

Wallace despised hunting for sport as she loved animals. Edward began to tell her how, on one of his father's shoots his party killed 4,000 pheasant. Wallace was aghast and speechless. Edward then told her 'the only word for it is carnage.'

    I find it interesting that after the death of Edward Vlll George V and Queen Mary in one year had a Coronation, an investiture ceremony at Carnarvon Castle for their heir and the Delhi Durbar in India. Here, following the death of Elizabeth ll we've been told that there will be no investiture ceremony for William and the Coronation will be scaled down. Britain is the only country in Europe where the sovereign is actually crowned. The other monarchies have innaugurations etc with the crown sitting on a cushion. God forbid that happens here. The State Opening of Parliament with cars instead of carriages,day clothing instead of robes and tiaras and the crown upon a cushion! No! If you're going to do it,do it right. The fact that our sovereign wears the crown and reads the speech from the throne after arriving by carriage procession is something special. It's continuity and tradition not an anachronism. Crowns were made to be worn. Same with tiaras and robes. We've been having Coronations for 1000 years and I say if it's not broken don't try to fix it.

But for the sake of the public’s voracious appetite for royal scandals satisfied by the tabloid press, the British monarchy is a relic of the past. In a word, too big to fail. Too many jobs involved, therefore too much money to pass up.
