Repeating a request from a few days ago, know you're busy. The song "Hocus Pocus", by the '70s band Focus. There's a live performance made superior to the studio recording, by the band refusing on a TV debut to keep within the segment limit (about half the length of the original). Instead, they did this impossible song twice as fast. I just sort of bouncing on my seat hoping you'll 'pick me! pick me!; because I'm absolutely sure you'll pause it as much as Man of Constant Sorrow. It's a buffet, and a really fun time.

Hi Maggie. I've recently become a subscriber and have been enjoying your song reactions. I notice that you've fallen in love with Pentatonix and Avi in particular. If you want to really hear Avi sing listen to their rendition of Imagine.

Love this arrangement. I feel like his nasal tone in the beginning has to be a stylistic choice. He has such control over his instrument it's hard to imagine it as anything else.

I thought the nasal tone was singer's choice as well. My impression was that the nasality lent a southern/country "twang" to the song - which fits because the song is set in New Orleans.

This nasal sound, for bass singers is the best way to get more resonance on the sound, is not that clean, but have much more resonance... Well, for me works in that way, I think is the same for Geoff. Great reaction as always! ❤

There's a Voiceplay video very few react to called "Waving Through a Window ". I think you might like it in that there are actually some instruments used in it. It makes it a unique addition to their already amazing work.Great video as always .

I had the same reaction to the start of this as you. i almost didn't even listen to the whole thing because the first part sounded so wrong. but after listening to it through a few times, I think its completely planned. the start is drab, with little pieces that are almost dissonance. but then the song grows in harmony and depth. till by the end you are rocking out. I don't think it would be as good at the end without that strange beginning. knowing Geoff, that's most likely planned in full!!

He does sound really nasal during at the start of the song. But he doesn't typically sound this way (before or since). I think it was a stylistic choice.

The only originals I've seen by any members of VP are the "One Minute Musicals".

Come on Maggie, Every song doesn't have to be Enunciated properly to be great!!! That's why there's Country & Gospel and even Rock songs with words like gamblin', th, etc!!! I know, you're a proper style girl!!!

I love a good falsetto, however, an insane bass sound, like Geoff Castellucci, carries more emotion & intensity! Absolutely love his voice 😊❤️

I definitely thought the same about the tonality in his main line. It was obviously a deliberate choice since that is not how he typically sings. One of the very few times I haven't quite agreed with a musical choice he has made, but overall it was fantastic. I can't wait to hear what you think of the VP wicked medley which is maybe their best yet. Right up there with Hoist the Colours for me.

I just assumed he heard everyone saying he's an alien and was a little off on purpose to trick us into believing he's human.

Since you mentioned his arrangements a couple times it maybe doesn't hurt to point out/remind that when Home Free did their cover of Elvira and featured Oak Ridge Boys, Geoff did that arrangement for them. Credited by the Tim in the video close out

I remember The Animals in the '60s (showing my age ) I think I like Geoff's arrangement better. He does his research of the original + covers that have been done to find what he can do differently to make it his own.

I loved the creativity Geoff took with this. I mean i love the original a lot, and was initially apprehensive when I saw he covered it. Still wouldn't say it is my favourite by him, but he -as always - did such a great job. Maggie, dont you just feel the vibe when he sings? :P Was also swaying and dancing in my chair when the beat picked up. Couldn't help it :) Thanks so much for reacting to it as always - I always, always enjoy watching the vids of yours.

B-E-A-U-TIFUL video as always! :D I love this song, one of my fav from Geoff as he uses his voice to prolong consonants instead of vowels - this is incredibly good! Though I really like something he did that you said is not very well. I know it is not clear sound but it sounds quite nice as a some step back, I feel like doing first line along with second line at the same time giving it some expression of holding back (possibly related to lyrics) - for some reason I have never noticed in as a wrong thing, just an another technique used by vocalist - but also I have no strict musical education (except some minor little schooly mooly ;) ), but actually I don't feel bad hearing that as a good singing type, perhaps its better for me haha Also - I love the lightenings spinning around the video xD

Great reaction. I really do like this song that Geoff did, although, I was a little thrown off at the start, but when it got going, it really went! Even though I noticed you hearted my previous comment, 'Emperor's New Clothes' by The Bass Gang. I think the nasally sound was a very conscious decision on Geoff’s part, it really accentuates both the harmonies and the deep bass

I too agree that the opening isn't my favorite, though not because of nasality, I just don't like some of the choices in vowel elongation. Part of what I loved about the original was the specific combination of long vowels and quick cutoffs, and without them it just doesn't sound right, but I also don't think nasality is necessarily bad.

I’ve heard the slight nasal quality in some songs lately as well. I was wondering if it was an attempt to sound more southern/country in songs. But then I wondered if only I heard it. Is there anything with breathing techniques that explains this?

I so enjoy watching your reactions, and totally respect that you have to be honest when you find something that you think could have been improved upon. I was another viewer who was kind of disappointed by the first verse and almost turned it off only to be totally involved by the end of the song. I'm kind of maxed out on Patreon right now since I'm a member for Geoff, Voiceplay and Pattycake already, but hope to be able to become a patron for you some time when my financial situation will allow me to expand my support. Earlier today, I was watching some other reactors, and it's just so hard for me to understand people who are actually turned off by the theatricality of Geoff's and Voiceplay's approach to their work. My earliest musical memories are of listening to my parent's collection of Broadway and Hollywood musicals, so I guess I find it natural that one of the main reasons I listen to people sing is to hear them tell a story through music. And to me scenery, props and costuming are just natural tools to use to help tell the story. Theatricality only bothers me when it's done to try and mask the fact that the person is only a mediocre singer. How does Geoff's range compare with an operatic bass? Since opera was established in a pre-microphone/amplification, I imagine that they simply couldn't be expected to sing as low as low as Geoff and the other acapella basses are currently performing. Geoff will freely admit that while he can hit those low notes, they wouldn't be nearly as audible without the advantage of having a microphone and some engineering tweaks available to amplify them.

I would really love to see you do some of Avi's solo works, they're all amazing and his new one "The First Place I Go" is so elegant and soulful

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks this rendition of House of the Rising Sun sounds a bit off at near the beginning. Now that we're in the Christmas season I recommended Home Free's Full of Cheer, but maybe watch Champagne Taste on a Beer Budget first. Both songs are Tim Foust originals and I don't think he meant for one to follow the other storywise but that's the way it turned out. Both are very funny and so much fun.

This really is one of my favorite covers of his. Just the energy he brings to it is amazing. I love the original, but the flow in this one is amazing! ☀☀☀ One other really fun... not exactly a cover, but a song that uses the House of the Rising Sun music is one by The Five Blind Boys of Alabama, who sang Amazing Grace to the music of House of the Rising Sun. It puts such a different spin on the lyrics from Amazing grace... and honestly, is pretty darn true to the story behind the original song.

I think another reason people may get "thrown off" in the beginning is that everyone who has ever touched an acoustic guitar have played this song, and always in Am. So eventhough most don't have perfect pitch, Abm still sounds a little weird

Excellent review. Loved this song. His arrangements are great. Watched Voiceplays new release "Wicked" yesterday and he did the arrangement for that. Wow. They just keep getting better. Rachel Potter is in it which makes it even better :-)

You missed another Eb1 at the end during the section with the Harmony parts out front. He drops the Eb1 subtly and it was a bit overshadowed by the other parts.

I do love his version of this song...the harmonies are great as always...but I do have to agree with you , that he sounded nasal in that one area. I have noticed that in other songs as well......But, then I get blown away by his lows.

some of the early collaborations of Rachel Potter with Voiceplay have interesting interactions between Rachel and Geoff...nothing overt but obvious respect.......standard Appalachian riff in the humming groove ....try Austin Brown and Tim Faust duet on "My Maria"....you and Austin?

You should give a try to "Seven Tears are Flowing to the River by Nargaroth"

I think he was deliberate with the nasal tones in an attempt to sound more 'Bluesy'. But I agree with you Maggie. I didn't really care for it although I feel he was successful in what he was going for. Maybe over did it early in the song. Overall, great!

Being a central Florida boy myself I'm assuming that "nasality" you hear is often front and center with those of us who grew up in the area as Geoff did. It becomes more pronounced when we sing with even the slightest country twang. Not all of us are blessed with a non-descript mid-Atlantic accent.

I agree, from central FL as well and that twang in any sense tends to just initiate that nasality

I really love this cover, and it's honestly one of my favorites from him. I do admit in the first bit, I also found the main part a little... off. But it doesn't last very long, and the rest is just *chef's kiss* excellent!

I won't lie, I thought the intro sounded the way it did because it was meant to sound tired and a little down. Maybe I'm wrong. But that's how it came across to me.

Mind you I don't really have a musical background. I just feel the music. It either flows through me with the feels or it doesn't. Something about hit rendition did not do it for me. While he is talented as heck. He is a great singer, and I LOVE bass when it comes to voices. I love how you call out the notes in your videos.

Good rendition but nothing beats the original by the Animals. The lead singer with the baby face had a voice that belied his age and will live in memory for ever. React to some of the Animals other songs and listen to the raw power of a voice that tears at your sole

Maggie, I've noticed on a few videos you thinking artists are having "issues" when they're doing things in more of a country singer style. I don't know the technical wording but a lot of what you didn't like in this video and in another of yours I've seen are stylistic of country music and celebrated in those artists.
