A story about the Greybeards you were questioning at the beginning: In the primary book series they tell a story about the men of the North. They say that when winter comes and food supplies are running low. The old men, who they refer to as Greybeards will tell their families that they are going out to hunt. But in reality, they know they are going out to die in order to not be a burden any longer to their families. Because with the irregularity of the seasons, they never know how long a winter might last. So in the book Fire and Blood, which House of the Dragon is based on, these men from the North want to go fight because they feel that it will give them something worthwhile to do, rather than being a burden on their families.

Greybeards are northmen who are getting old and have already had children. It's northern tradition that when winter comes, they sacrifice themselves to leave more food for the younger memebers of their family. Either they walk out in the snow and never come back, or, if there's a war on in the south, they head south to fight with no expectation of coming back.

It was WAY worse in the book. Blood and Cheese entered Alicent's chambers, tied her up and gagged her and strangled her bedmaid. Then they waited for Helaena to bring her children, including 2-year old Maelor, to say goodnight to their grandmother. When she arrived, they held her at swordpoint, demanded that she choose which son should die, and threatened to rape her daughter if she refused. She chose Maelor, perhaps believing that the boy was too young to understand. Then Blood whispered to the boy, "see, your momma wants you dead", spun round, and cut Jaeherys's head off instead. Can't go into the effects and consequences without spoilers, but... every bit as bad as you can possibly imagine...

At this point in the story (Fire and blood lore) there is already a rift between Rhaenyra and Daemon… I will not spoil anything but it probably will be integrated into the storyline of the series… In the book, it’s Healena and Aemon’s younger son who is killed. It’s not less horrible but the heir and twin sister aren’t touched. Which makes the whole thing a new mirroring of the both sides since Lucerys is the youngest too… It’s a constant theme in the both, book and show. They are reflecting each others in every aspect of their fate, whatever the circumstances and the outcome. Funny enough, it’s also the same thing in a more practical sense as the younger son of Aliscent and Viserys hasn’t yet been seen… they obviously don’t want to complicate the situation with second hand characters…

I do think Alicent deserves to have consensual sex, and experience pleasure, after sll those years of marital rape. A lot of her bitterness towards Rhaenyra was due to the sexual violence Alicent was forced to endure "for duty", while Rhaenyra was able to have satisfying relationships by bending the rules in ways Alicent could not. That sense of unfairness, directed wrongly, and the feeling of being alone in her suffering rather than having her friend with her in that circumstance, I think was what drove Alicents bitterness and judgement. But this is indeed massively hypocritical of Alicent and Criston. This SHOULD make them shift their perspective on Rhaenyra. But will it? Or will they remain guilt-ridden hypocrites?

They actually went 'soft' with the final scene compared to how the lore (and the book) describes the incident. I'm definitely fine not seeing the actual murder, but the old story was probably a little scarier (and certainly more messed up), as terrifying as this was.

A pretty good episode premiere and as a green fan im glad we didnt get to actual see the beheading of a toddler. Rhaenyra is going to loose her mind with what Daemon has done.....This event ruins any sympathy the blacks once had with the small folk and it will further the greens propaganda that rhaenyra and daemon r the next maegor the cruel.

    1. Yes scorpions were a thing because this is a time where there lots of dragons. During GoT, dragons hadn't been around for a long time. 2. I didn't read Fire and Blood but book readers are PISSED they didn't follow what was in the novel for the Blood & Cheese scene. 3. I said it last season and I'll say it again, Luke's death was Rhaenrya's fault PERIOD. She should have sent a raven to Storm's End. She would have gotten one of three responses from Lord Baratheon: 1. "I'm holding to the oath my father took & I recognize you as queen." OR 2. "You were named before there was a male heir and the report is that it was King Viserys' dying wish to have Aegon be the heir, so my father's oath is null & void. I'm Team Green." OR 3. "You look like you need some help to hold onto your crown there, missy. Team Green promised to have Prince Aemond marry one of my daughters. Make me an offer." There was ABSOLUTELY no need to risk her son AND a dragon, two valuable pieces. She gave the order, it's on her.

Luke's death was not her fault there was no reason for her to assume aemond was going to be a storms end nor any reason to believe he'd kill Luke given he was just a messenger , the whole reason they send dragons was a show of strength and to be more convincing it was a good idea aemond just ruined it .

@@thatoneblackdude3333 That's the problem right there. You can't have it both ways. If she is the Queen then as a ruler/leader, you have to take into account ALL possibilities which include Aemond being there or even if he is not there that Lord Baratheon might side with Aegon and have Luke detained as leverage. The point stands. A dragon was faster but a raven was safer. It would have cost Rhaenyra NOTHING to send a raven. The buck stops with her. A ruler must take accountability.

@@trini_staple accounting for everything doesn't mean assumption random shit to happen she can't account for shit she doesn't know about she's not omniscient , he's not going to detain a messenger that doesn't make sense rhenyrea had no reason to assume Luke would be in danger, the plan wasn't the problem hindsight is 20/20 there was no way rhenyrea would know aemond would be there or that he'd be evil enough to commit kin slaying the one of the most evil things you can do in this world bottom line its ridiculous to blame rhenyrea for something that was out of her control.

@@thatoneblackdude3333 Now you sound silly. YES you have to account for everything but you may not be able to so you account for ALMOST everything. Was there a possibility that Team Green would be trying to sway Lord Baratheon to their side? YES a high one. It's highly possible that Aemond could be the person they sent. YES. He is a prince who isn't married and Lord Baratheon has unwed daughters. Does he has an axe to grind when it comes to Luke. YES. A Queen HAS to account for that. And unless my memory fails me, Baratheon asked Luke what offer he came with, which means he was most likely on the fence and wanted to choose the side he profit the most from. As far as Luke not being detained, the world of GoT is based on real history and even within the world GGRM made, ASOIAF, there are traitors, backstabbers & oathbreakers. There are people who did things other people didn't expect them to do. Lord Baratheon might have been loyal initially but he might have realized which way the wind was blowing ( a male heir is more acceptable to the people ) and decided to switch sides. A queen HAS to account for that. There is NOTHING you can say that will change my mind because the point stands. If Luke wasn't there it wouldn't have happened. It would have cost Rhaenyra NOTHING to send a raven. ZIP, ZILCH, NADA

@@trini_staple idk why your so insistent on blaming rhenyrea for her own sons death what happened was completely out of her control and there was no way for her to plan around that your being ridiculous this is like blaming alicent for Cole killing beesbury, you can't prevent something you don't even know is going to happen it's unreasonable to blame rhenyrea for these events because there was no way she could have predicted any of this .

I don't see him as completely evil. Y'all remember Jamie Lannister? The dude that many people loved but in case you forgot PUSHED A CHILD FROM A TOWER WINDOW AND HOPED THE FALL WOULD KILL HIM? Yeah, defend that and then tell us we can't defend Daemon EVER. GRRM is the king of writing morally grey characters. What I see is both Daemon and Aemond being the same. They both act on their impulses. Aemond did, and Luke died. Daemon heard Rhaenera and immediately started planning his sneaky way into the castle. He wasn't thinking about whether or not these dudes would be able to kill Aemond - and for all we know, he though Blood could handle him with the element of surprise and Aemond being asleep. 🤷‍♀️ B&C didn't look for Aemond very hard, they just wanted to get out of there with a head and get their money. It looked as if they didn't care which prince they killed, they just went for the first one they saw. Does that mean Daemon told them to? Maybe, maybe not. We didn't hear him say to go after the child as plan B. If he did, sure, let's hate him. But I would rather wait and see his reaction when he hears the news. My prediction, he didn't say to kill a child, he left it open ended and vague, and they did their bumbling idiot thing, to which his response will be something like 'well that's not what I said, but too late now' and shrugging.
