House of the Dragon Discussion & Review: 203 "The Burning Mill"

Ойын-сауық

In episode 3 of season 2, titled "The Burning Mill," the episode opens with a violent clash between the Bracken and Blackwood families over territorial disputes. This small skirmish escalates into a major battle, resulting in hundreds of casualties and a burning mill. This marks the first significant fight in the civil war, highlighting the deep-seated animosities between supporters of Rhaenyra and Aegon. Daemon Claims Harrenhal. His conquest is swift, as the castellan surrenders immediately. Daemon is haunted by lifelike dreams, including a disturbing vision of a younger Rhaenyra sewing Jaehaerys' head back onto his body, reflecting his guilt and the ominous atmosphere of Harrenhal. Criston Cole Musters an army. King Aegon orders Cole to lead a small force to gather support from loyal Houses. Despite opposition from his mother Alicent and other advisors, Criston sets out, bringing Alicent's brother Gwayne Hightower along. They narrowly escape an encounter with Baela and her dragon Moondancer, underscoring Criston's inexperience. Rhaenyra sneaks into King’s Landing disguised as a septon to meet with Alicent. She attempts to negotiate peace, revealing that Alicent misunderstood Viserys' last words about Aegon. Despite being shaken by this revelation, Alicent remains entrenched in the conflict and urges Rhaenyra to leave the city.

Great review! This was my favorite episode of this season as well, especially after last week. Aegon is turning into one of my favorite characters. Nor my favorite person by far, but as a character, they have given him so many conflicting choices and storyline where he has made decisions based on the influences of other people. In his more human moments, like crying on his bed at the death of his son, or even the mercy he showed when petitioners came to court, his other decisions I think are written in that he is doing some things because he thinks it's expected of him by other people and not just himself. I think this in itself adds a depth to his character where you can see an internal struggle happening, and then taking that energy and confusion, using it to be over the top like in the brothel scene.

its funny that you guys also noticed that the characters are not quite the same they used to be, not sure if that's inconsistency or if the writers are developing them

@@roadtotarvalon I mean Otto congratulates and praises alicent for attacking raynera and her kids. Now he is condemning Aegon. What can we take from that?

Preston made a great point. The show needs to stop relying on shock drama in every episode. The scene with Alicent and Rhaenyra trying to meet was absurd and unnecessary. If the goal is to create shocking moments, they should focus on ones that matter. For example, a scene where Cole and Alicent are having an intimate moment, and Rhaenyra, dressed as a septa to discuss peace, stumbles upon them. That would be a meaningful shock that adds to the story. It really undermines the message of antiwar wheneverything is just and ooppsie. WOOPPSIE Alicent misunderstood Vyseries. What is the point of the show misunderstandings lead to war? kinda lame. Great acting and direction , great episodes, but there is always that one scene that makes utterly no sense

@@konstantinkrastev4478 I'm actually saving his episode for when I walk my dog later today 😆 I think they have cut down on the shock value stuff a little bit (I though that head was going to roll off the cart last week) but there are still a few things that are a a little silly. Had the secret meeting not happened I think this episode is a 9. I loved it.
