House of the Dead 1 - No Continues - 101,860

Here is a very high scoring run on SEGA's amazing zombie light-gun arcade game House of the Dead 1, cleared on one credit, and rolling the score over too!
This is played on the Model 2 arcade emulator, allowing upscaled resolutions, and using a DolphinBar with a Wiimote for aiming. It works almost as well as the original gun.
House of The Dead is the first in SEGA's successful light-gun game series, known at its time for the great gory graphics and having many branching paths based on your game play, or if you shoot certain parts of scenery (usually arrows). And before anyone says, I intentionally get hit at 03:29 to take a higher scoring route.
Getting a 1 Credit Clear is quite an achievement in House of the Dead 1, despite it giving you lots of extra lives throughout. It is difficult because the amount of extra lives awarded is far less once you get to the third stage, and that there is a maximum lives cap of 5 by default. If you rescue all of the humans, you get access to a secret room on the final stage, which gives 4 more lives, and lots more points too!
The next achievement in House of the Dead 1 is to score high, clearing the game with over 62,000 points gives you Rank 1 and most importantly, the best ending. Once you can do this, all there is left is to try and roll the score over.
The scoring system in House of the Dead 1 is simple, but scoring high is hard to do while not taking hits. Most enemies give 80 points, but 120 more points for every head shot. Most of the enemies just require one head shot, so they score 80 + 120 = 200. Some enemies take two head shots, so 80 + 120 + 120 = 320 points. It can be very difficult to shoot all of the enemies in the head, but there are techniques that can be used per enemy type, I try my best in this run.
Stage 2 and 3 bosses also award 120 points per head shot.
The stage 2 boss has a set amount of shots that he can take, so the strategy is to let the boss get close and then shoot the head quickly. This is a lot harder than it looks, but with some practice, it can be done well.
For the first form, either you can shoot his head a certain amount of times, or you can leave him alone until the second form.
The stage 3 boss is different, you have to shoot the head to stop it from attacking you, but then you have a short period of time to get some extra shots in, these shots give no damage to the boss, but add 120 per each successful head shot. Sometimes the amount of time to get in extra shots is longer than other times.
Scoring well on both of these bosses is required to get the 100,000 score.
Some enemies don't seem to award any points at all once they have thrown their projectiles, and sometimes when fighting Hangedman on stage 4, he doesn't award any points at all after being defeated!
Every human rescued awards 400, and every life up when on maximum lives awards 300. Bonus lives at the end of the stage give no points.
Losing a life takes away 100 points, but losing a life from a projectile usually takes away 200. Getting hit straight after losing a life, while this doesn't take another life off, it still reduces your score even more.
To get the score display, after inserting the coin, pull the left trigger 3 times, and then the right trigger 2 times. If the machine is set on freeplay, you have to wait until the title screen is shown with the house in the background, then press the triggers and then start. This is a feature in the whole series and is strange why there isn't a score display by default, they are arcade games after all!

One of the interesting things about this game is that there is a set maximum number of attainable points at about 126,000. This would basically involve doing everything perfectly and head-shotting everything as well as scoring extra hits where possible, for example on the 3rd boss. Crazy good run man.
As a long time fan of “the house of the dead” series, I recall playing the arcade version of this a couple years ago. It was at bowling place in Forrest city NC, and now it’s not there anymore which is a bummer.

Here in France, there is a town named Chamonix in the Alpes. There was an arcade station with a lot of cool games like Metal Slug, House of The Dead (3 and then 4), Let's Go Jungle !, etc. But it also closed several years ago...

That's a surprise! Well done! You certainly have memorised the best scoring areas and you staggered the 99999 score! This is a great video to prepare for the soon to release HOTD: Scarlet Dawn! (if it comes to the west) It seems that if the life cap is full, the rank should be at its maximum and the zombies attack more faster, aggressive as well as some dealing surprise attacks through the timing and more HP...

I've had to learn to maximise every part of the game to get this score, but it wasn't too hard I don't think there is a rank system in this game, enemies only speed up once you have shot them or the previous enemy

That bgm when you fight with the last boss is lit. I never know the game have a bgm in the first place since I've been playing in pc. But playing without bgm make the game more spooky and scary in my opinion. Great play. Been following your channel since you playing ninja rail shooter.

It was egregiousguy who inspired me to try and go for the 100k. My best score in the arcade is 105,680, and that's without the extra two lives at the beginning. P.S. I usually take the right elevator at 17:52. I always messed up three of those distant zombies in the route you went.

Oh nice one, I know how much effort that must have taken With the elevators, I didn't look into the other route so much, but I usually seem to score well with the far away zombies on the runs that don't go so well!

Good video, and great job with the score! This was one game I've always wanted to play, reminds me a bit of Virtua Cop 2, which I played on the PC, but with zombies (or, 'creatures', as they're officially called). Are you planning on making a video about how to get all the routes? There seems to be an absolute non-existence of these for the 1st game.

That FAQ is ages old and drastically needs an update but it's a perfect guide for people who are unfamiliar with the game and want a quick head start.
On what difficulty is this?Judging by the speed of the enemies it's on normal.

This is on Normal settings yeah, enemies speed up once you have shot them, or the previous enemy
How many attempts did it take for you to get the one credit one completed? And what if HOTD 1 & 2 could be redone in the current graphics style that HOTD Scarlet Dawn has?
And what can I say ? U r the best player in every shooting game.
4:17 there's an another route if you shoot the collapses (until broken), try it if you still have the game

thanks for the tips to get score more than 60300++ ( happy ending) , i just downloaded this house of the dead arcade version , arcade version is better graphic and with background music than pc version with low graphic and no background music . i play as G , player 2 mode coz i love G gun sound and G dialogue is cool , so much nostalgic !

I often play The House of The Dead in the laptop. But in the laptop, The House of The Dead in the laptop is no music, but spooky vibes and gun sound.
Is this the recommended route to get the good ending? I always seem to get the normal ending even by saving all the hostages.

To get the good ending, you have to score over 62,000. Scoring less than this, and less than this with a score ending in 0 gives you the other two endings

No problem, and yes I would say this is the best route to take for scoring, and helping get the most chance of getting the good ending, though you would still have to try and score to get it
I just realized that the first scientist is holding the photo cel of workers that is seen on the 'saved' survivors score screen after each level

Do you get more score out of a kill if you shoot the body first then the head so it adds up? Or is it the same amount or more if you just go straight for the head?

Headshots and kills add towards score, so as long as you do get the headshot, you'll get maximum points. There are enemies that take 2 headshots, and you should try to hit the head twice for those.
Question: at 4:22, can you shoot the debris on the stairs to clear the path?

Is there any particular ways which help learn 1CC clears, apart from replaying the game lots of times? Such as doing Time Attack on certain stages, or replaying a certain boss until you get it down?

The best piece of advice is record your play and see where you are getting hit, or dropping points, and then anticipate it next time around. For this game, the different enemy types have their own way of attacking, just remember that and have a set way of taking them out. For the bosses, just shoot really quickly, or if you are playing for score, spend a lot of time learning to max out the Stage 2 boss!

@@Smraedis Thanks for the advice man, it's very similar to learning Fighting games or RTS games in that respect, just watch replays for more info. I'd like to be able to single Credit TC1 & TC2, but I'm down to around 3 credits and stuck a little. Single credit on any HOTD game feels almost impossible, even more so with the final boss of HOTD 3!

@@EagleEye5599 Oh yeah, learning from your mistakes is useful for many things! TC2 is the easiest of the games you listed in my opinion, with the enemy shots being predictable. I remember HOTD1 felt impossible at first, then when I got the 1CC, I then felt getting 100k was impossible too!

This.....this.....IS FUCKING AWESOME!!! This is by far the BEST playthrough I've EVER seen on KZread. Seriously, this is fucking excellent, the game is beautiful and the best I've ever seen it graphics and performance wise, and you're aiming is top notch my friend, over 100k WITHOUT a continue; I can tell that you'd been practising a lot as you were straight up flexing with the Hangedman and Hermit bosses; it was headshot city and it was BEAUTIFUL!! Seriously, why couldn't Sega just use an emulator like this and re-release it with modern TV screen compatibility? This is INFINITELY better than that fucking trash that they called a "Remake" that came out last year! Seriously, I would have paid good hard cash just to play the OG arcade emulation version on my Xbox. House of the Dead 1 is the original and best of all the HOTD series - with HOTD: Overkill being a VERY close second - and infinitely superior to the rest of HOTD series. Outstanding and thank you for such a good playthrough, this isn't just a video, it's fucking ART!!! Definitely will be watching more of your playthroughs soon!!!

@@theinfantfinite1243 I have the same score as you too my man. I've played all The House Of The Dead games. I enioyed the original a lot. But part 3 is my favorite in the series the most. This series just gets better and better with every follow up. My dad and I are huge fans of The House Of The Dead. I beat the first four games at the arcade. I hope I can get a chance to play The House Of The Dead Scarlet Dawn next alongside The House Of The Dead remake soon. The House Of The Dead and Time Crisis are the golden age arcade games.

A no damage run is just about possible from 1 Player play, but from a scoring point of view, you just end up losing some lives from trying to get as many head shots as possible, it is finding the medium of getting the 1CC with the most score

The arm of the zombie already shot off just before he attacks.. it's zombie physics are great considering this game is old, limbs torn off, broken bodies, and gore level is pure badass too

To be honest you can play this on pc... and some of you know that the right click is the reload... and left is the shoot and what i do is spam both and i get infinite bullets XD and i still have not finish the game without dying
