House Demolition, Bradley at Burling, Bethesda
www.pedestrians.org
Demolition of a house at the corner of Bradley and Burling in Bethesda, MD.
The water from the hose starts out red. The sudden change in the water flow to the fire hydrant stirred up rusty sediment in the water main to the hydrant. It clears up after a minute once the sediment is flushed out.
Produced by John Z Wetmore, producer of "Perils For Pedestrians".

I like watching this guy work. He dont tiptoe around, he jumps right in and chomps it into splinters. He ain't messing around! Great video!
Symbolic, the garage door closed for the last time.
Built in 1937 when Bradley Blvd just converted from trolley line to an actual road. According to census data, the first owner was an engineer and subsequent owners included a member of the secret service, an architect and two MORE engineers!
GREAT video - THE BEST thing to watch when you're in a pissed off mood!
That was beautiful!! That was a good sized structure too! That operator knew how to get it done!
Coming to a place near you, a cheaply build McMansion that will stick out like a sore thumb in the neighborhood
it would be nice to see inside the houses before they pull them down
Design wise, that house made no sense to me! I think it’s architect was Mike Brady! I got a certain feeling of satisfaction watching it come down.
Wouldn't that have been funny if the job superintendent showed up frantically waving his/her arms saying...you were supposed to tear down the house next door!!!! 🙊🙉🙈

One time when I was a kid, I woke up to thump, thump, thump. I got up and looked outside and guys with pickaxes were tearing out our driveway. I told my dad, and he went out and talked to them. Wrong address, they patched it up.

I think they likely check to make sure the power company has severed the power lines before they touch a place like that. Big red flag if that isn't the case.
Nice multi tasking. Keeping down the dust and flushing the hydrant as well.

Doubtful. Just a normal split level.
Seems like such a waste.
It took almost 38 minutes to take down this house, BUT, how long did it take to clean up all the mess?
how satisfying was the wait for that large picture window to be broken?
Wow now that's a demo!
Great reportage
My house is like 200 years old... What was so wrong with that place. I saw good windows bricks all that... Is this a military home?
Why was this done?

That's right. If you ever see a demo without a water spray, you can tell how much more dust there is.
With the current housing shortage why not refurbish these older homes unless there's too many issues wrong with it and build the new McMansions elsewhere?
He made short work of that house!, my kind of demolition, none of that recycling stuff, just smash it!, loved the way that brick extension exploded when he pulled the roof off!
That was quick! A 1940 house that had gotten into pretty rough shape in an expensive neighborhood, looking at the listing photos. Getting torn down so something bigger and better can go up? It sold in October for $650,000 according to Zillow. They say the one next door is worth over $1.3 M. What was that funny little room or tower behind the chimney? Didn't seem to be accessible. Thanks for posting, John.

Looks like it had newer windows
This kinda sounded satisfying to me.
Photos and info on this house still may be seen at www.zillow.com/homedetails/5500-Bradley-Blvd-Bethesda-MD-20814/37167433_zpid/? (as of 6/2021. Ugh! What a dump! The photos do not present this fixer-upper, diamond-in-the-rough as very desirable. OK, it's from a bygone era and has been added onto, apparently several times, but at some point it is best to demolish and begin with a blank slate. This is one. The parcel sold for $650K, but the surrounding properties are all valued over $1.3 M.
Why was the house demolished?

It is being replaced with a McMansion.
The attic fan was turning till the final blow!
Time you smash it all down it should only take two dumpsters normally without the water on it it would run around $1,200 to dump it a job of that size will usually Mount you around $8,000 or more depending on where you are at and from and what they're going price is within that state or town I have thousands of hours of heavy equipment operating hours it is pretty easy and exciting at that
From the outside, nicer than any I ever lived in, granted 2 happend to be trailers 😂😂😂😂
In a throwaway society with a housing shortage amid a pandemic, this creates homeless military veterans without hope!
1:45 I had never seen anyone push through that hard
I would not want to live on a street that busy. The traffic was interrupting the nice smashing sounds.

Lol I feel like when this house was built, it was a quite 2-way street. Where I live now, it also used to be nice and quaint. Then 20 years of development flew by. Now I hate it!!

Have to love that the EpA thinks that water holds down all of asbestos dust.
So typical of Bethesda. House prices are so high that people will buy split level homes from the 70s, mow them down, and build new mansions on them.
Imagine someone frantically opened the window like "wut de hell" 😳
I love it. Just love it ❤

It is a pity that there aren't more salvage companies that could remove windows and doors and plumbing parts. I expect the insurance would be high. I have seen a couple of episodes of TOH where a lot was recycled and resold at a profit.

No one really wants old windows and most people won’t to the work to remove old hardwood floors with all the nails and such
Watch at either 1.5 or 2x.. So satisfying and fast too.. 😂😂😂😂😂😂 My guess as to why it was demolished would be one of two things.. Mold? or New construction..
That is some dirty water coming out of that hose

It clears up after a minute. When they start up the hydrant, the change in flow stirs up the rusty sediment at the bottom of the water main.
I cannot understand the foolishness behind this. Why do you need heavy equipment to bring down a wood building. I would remove the good wood and reuse .
Dang. At first I was like calm down. He destroys it so fast. Like in such sudden force. But looking at the comments it seems like they just know really what and what to do

He definitely did a good job. He planned the demo, climbed the trash pile to get to the higher level. He did it quick. Let's just hope he separated materials accordingly lol
Again, SO many resources that could have and should have been reclaimed! Example: EVERY SINGLE DOOR in that house could have been easily salvaged and used by Habitat for Humanity. The builders measure donated doorways and windows, as they build a new home, and make these quality old doors and windows work…instead of reducing them to waste. It is pathetic how dismissive and wasteful we are as a society.

No, people like you don't understand that it costs resources to save stuff, and there are fewer resources used in trashing the old and making something new. The charge that we are a wasteful society is just silly. We do trash things that have served their purpose and are not worth keeping. That is sensible and conserves resources.
Turns out it was next doors they were supposed to demolish
Just think it takes months to build a house, has stood there for decades and took all but 30 minutes to tear it all down like it was never even there.

It's coming out of a nearby fire hydrant. When they change the flow in the water mains, it stirs up the rusty sediment that has accumulated in the pipes. It clears up after a minute. If you live nearby, you might want to wait until tomorrow to do your laundry.
