I played both, beat them too. My verdict on this is I love them both and got something special out of both of them. I love the story to HM2 and getting to play with the fans, Beard, Miami mutilator, the gangster's henchman and the gangster himself. But playing as jacket in HM1 was awesome too as well as brutal. Plus the level editor was cool too.

2 was missing the atmosphere that 1 had. Half way through the game, I felt like the game was pointless because all it had was 'good level design/pacing' but nothing to keep me interested.

Lmao late but get good dude hotline Miami 2 is just more hotline Miami and it gives you more hours of play time yes it’s harder but every dark souls game gets harder does that make the next one worse? No Lmao. Just because it’s harder doesn’t make it worse it means you get more play time

I respect your opinion and the video was very fleshed out but you might change your playstyle a bit. See, the "entice, avoid, kill" cycle doesn't apply to the second game anymore, just as you said but that doesn't mean it's bad, just different (even better in my opinion) It's not these 1vs1 that you described anymore, but you vs the entire level where every enemy is just a small step to beating the level. This means, instead of carefully taking down enemies one by one, you are supposed to rush through the levels, killing your enemies on the way. It was impossible to do that in the first game without a melee weapon, in the second game you can do/ are required to do it with guns. When you have a bit practice in the game the game flow because just do much better than in HM1, it's just so gun rushing through the game, dhooting down enemies on the way without stopping once

Awesome video! The thing is that hotline miami is telling a single story about jacket and hotline miami 2 is a sequel about jackets's friends lifes. So in one mission you are not playing jacket with mask and the lust of blood, you are playing as his old friend that was telling a story when he was in military.

One side note, notice how in HM1 there is cool particle affects everytime you shoot your weapon and also sometimes the enemies can survive more than 1 bullet but, in HM2 the particle affects are reduced and everyone is back to only 1 shot (besides the big guys). I know it isnt a big deal but I thought i'd point it out

I think this also has to do with playstyle. I fully completed both gamees and If you want to get A+ on all levels in hotline miami, you actually have to rush through the levels in order to get the combos. While the luring enemies and taking them out systematically is also fun, and will also get you through the game, i feel that the game invites (and rewards) you to rush through the levels more. i can understand the critisism of the large open levels though.

I would say the time I saw the game like this, was with the levels playing as the journalist who refuses to kill. I had a lot of satisfaction keeping the momentum of knocking out enemies, taking their guns, then disarming it, while working your way to the next target to repeat. It tells you a lot about the character, and it felt awesome to see the combo score go up.

I agree with this video sadly. I see a lot of potential in Hotline Miami 2, I like the story, I like the Soundtrack way better than the first one, and I like how the graphics have slight improvement. But the problem is that the game is unfair and that in itself doesn’t want me to play the game. Good video and O agree with every word, you also helped me think deeper about how great the first Hotline Miami game is

look, i have played hotline miami 2 with a track pad on a shitty computer, you coulden't even aim while moving, so to use guns you have to pre aim and use movement in order to that. i had to use mainly melee weapons until i got used to pre aiming while preparing for a fight, i had to usually aim at a corridor entice a room of people then run as fast as i can to a close section to kill them without aiming, other wise i was melee only, and i didn't think he game was unfair, it wasn't that hard a few sections were difficult due to not being able to aim while moving. hotline miami 2 is like cuphead, but i think it reflects more on the basics, you can never do a level without dying atleast 3 or 4 times. you had to learn each level to every corridor and the enemy spacing which enemys had guns, each room needed a different strategy to it more than just rushing or enticing, you need to try every room untill you found the right strategy for that room, then die on the next one. (this might be because when i played i was on a shitty trackpad) but i dont think it was unfair. again this could just be because of my inability to aim with a gun fast and while moving, i couldent aim while moving at all, so maybe it added another level of thought when i played so everything here may not mean anything, but its just my personal opinion about the game.

I don't agree at all, this Entice - Avoid - Kill gameplay loop isn't really how you are meant to play the game. You can't even gain combos that way, resulting in a rather low score after the level. HM2 does a much better job at punishing that kind of gameplay style, you're supposed to learn the enemy placements, level layouts, how the different guns work, everything, so you can finish a screen in a single combo.

Personally, I like Hotline Miami 2 better because I find that it was easier to me than Hotline Miami 1. I REALLY DONT LIKE CHALLENGE. Plus Hotline Miami 1 had some strange ai for me. I always felt like I was dying cheaply despite it probably being because my aim is bad. Melee dudes would constantly stare off into the distance, and than lock on to me and kill me.

you're supposed to be fast in this game, y'know the tips from the first game... be fast.... don't be afraid of dying... don't be shit at the game... that wasn't a tip wasn't it? (jk). all jokes aside, you know you're not going to be good at the game within the first few hours. i noticed how the music was a bit far in during one of the richter scenes. i have 72 hours on hm2, it comes to you eventually. also, i found the entice, avoid, kill concept still working a bit in hm2. hm2 is about learning, when you peak a corner and a bullet comes flying at you, next time you respawn, try to flank or throw a weapon down the hall. or better yet, just fucking hold shift and if you still dont see the enemy fire like hell. i realize theres a lot of more other problems you could probably list about the game, but you can probably figure out and learn how to adapt to that, right? in this video, youre basically saying you dont enjoy a good challenge. in other words, try not to be an idiot and realize your surroundings before you just fucking jump out into the open, eh?

Yeah, being killed from seemingly nowhere sucks, but the game implies that ones you were killed by the enemy you didn't notice, you wouldn't make the same mistake again. Moreover you as a player have an option to look quite far by pressing shift, and I personally noticed only a couple of moments in the game, where pressing shift wouldn't help you finding a particular enemy. Also Hotline Miami 2 forcefully makes you vary your play style, which pushes the player out of their comfort zone. In your case, the comfort zone was the 3-step gameplay you were talking about. It's an obvious downside of making a game that doesn't allow a lot of freedom in terms of how to play the game. But that exact downside also makes the player vary their reactions to different situations, which are a lot in the sequel.
