The Soviets destroyed 80 percent of the German army. Then they took Berlin. Some battles cost a million men in a few days. The Soviets lost 20 million dead to the Americans 410,000. Our greatest victory was D-Day at Normandy. To the Soviets, Normandy would have seemed like a minor skirmish. I'm not dissing my American brothers--I'm saying we need to understand the Russian heritage.

Most of the dead were civilians under occupation, butchered by the Nazis and starved to death in besieged Leningrad. A significant part of the dead soldiers died in captivity from torture and starvation. Of course, a million people have never died on the battlefield in a few days. This is not Verdun and not the First World War. It was a maneuver war on both sides.

Now it is believed that the number of deaths in the 2nd World War by the USSR was 27 million, and most of them (17-18 million) are not military, but civilians, because Germany pursued a policy of genocide in the occupied Soviet territories. Сейчас считается, что число погибших во 2мв со стороны СССР было 27 млн. и большинство из них (17-18 млн.) - это не военные, а мирные жители, потому что на оккупированных советских территориях Германия проводила политику геноцида.

@@amarelanatura, and at the same time, the losses of the United States are only military personnel, and the losses of the USSR are mostly civilians. Approximately 16-18 million peaceful Soviet citizens became victims of the policy of genocide carried out by the Nazis in the occupied territories of the USSR. И при этом потери США - это только военнослужащие, а потери СССР по большей части мирные жители. Примерно 16-18 млн. мирных советских граждан стали жертвами политики геноцида, которую проводили нацисты на оккупированных территориях СССР.

You might also like the movies about a previous great war with Napoleon then, which is seen as one of the best ever filmed, called "War and Peace" from 1966, following Tolstoy's work. It was a very big scale production with a lot of help from the government, for example with around 15 000 soldiers for some scenes.

Gentlemen and comrades, citizens! Please do not forget that it was not Russians who fought, but Soviet people. A community of people, more than two hundred nationalities, united by class. The USSR is not united on a territorial basis, but the result of class battles. Had the Hungarian, German, and Finnish revolutions won at that time, the Union would have had a different configuration. In the film, the victory of ordinary people over the mad capitalists. They were either killed and never buried or they died due to famine / illnesses and they were buried being unidentified. Even today many people and special searching brigades are still looking for those people. If they are lucky, they find the remains of killed Soviet soldiers with a special medallion on. But predominantly, those remains can’t be identified. Btw, my mom’s uncle was killed in Stalingrad in 1942 and a special brigade found his remains only 15 years ago. Luckily, his medallion wasn’t corroded. Thus, the officials contacted us and we got all information.

According to recent studies, the Soviet Union lost about 27 million people. But most of the dead were not soldiers. Approximately 6.7 million soldiers died during the fighting, and about 4 million soldiers died in prisoner-of-war camps. But among the civilian population near 12-13 million people were killed, and 3-4 million people died of hunger. So it's more about the genocide of the population.

With some exceptions for movie artistic licence and the romantic element; I thought it was very good at presenting the soldiers view of a desperate battle against impossible odds given what the Nazis had accomplished prior to Stalingrad. The desperation of the fighting was reasonable and the close range artillery was well done. Respectable sets & weather format and best explosions as usual in a Russian movie. It earns a 8.0/10.0 IMHO.
