The story of a young guy Vadim, sentenced to 25 years, and sent to serve his sentence in one of the GULAG camps. Vadim does not find a common language with thieves, and in particular with a local authority Clerk. He finds himself in the middle of a local showdown, and the desire to live forces him to escape. Hiding in the house of a young girl Natalia, Vadim learns the feeling of true love. This love gives Vadim the strength not to seek death anymore, but to stay alive, go through all the circles of hell called the GULAG, and find a way out - early release with the removal of a criminal record...

Wow gem of a movie ! You see one needs no elaborate and complex story and plot to make a good movie. This movie proves that the Russians are far far ahead in movie making than so called award winning bla bla bla movies. Great presentation of so many complex characters and simple cinematography , very apt music are the very enjoyable aspects of this wonderful movie. All the actors have done a superb job. How does he still have all of his teeth after all of those terrible beatings? The same way leading ladies always have lipstick fresh even on a desert island after a year....Hollywood...or in this case Мосфильм. But otherwise a very good film. The leading actor is very good.
