I am excited to try this as well. I have super blonde, baby fine, but extremely thick hair. It would be really great to have a shampoo bar that doesn’t leave my hair greasy OR dried to bits. I have made several now and I just haven’t found the correct combo.

Thank you again for showing your step by step guide for shampoo soap making. I love this idea as you dont need to spend a lot of money on shampoo and conditioner,plus there is NO PALM OIL added to the shampoo making,and less land fill. Green Blessings to you always.

Love this! Just getting back to vinegar for hair care and making my own this time. I currently have some lemon and some juniper. I made my first soap yesterday. I’ll have to try this one out soon, but with the crock pot as we don’t keep a microwave anymore.

Thanks for the video. I've been making my own CP soap for years. I plan to try this shampoo bar next. I was using my own soap and ACV rinse on my hair but after a few months it seemed dry. I'm hoping this bar does the trick! Where do you purchase your bulk essential oils?

Thanks, I hope it works for you. I don't use soap on my hair anymore, it makes my scalp itch! Lots of people are fine with this soap though, so it's worth a try. I buy my bulk EO's online, mostly from Escentials of Australia.

If you can, it's good. Makes it a bit easier. But if not, you can just use the same equipment for soap and food, you just have to be sure you've got everything absolutely cleaned perfectly otherwise your food could taste a bit soapy! No harm done though :)

Hi Diane, thanks for your comment. I didn't feel like talking for this one, so I tried something different! Thanks for your feedback though, I'm sure there will be more of my voice in future videos ;) I don't have a recipe for hair conditioner just yet, but I'm starting to do a lot more research in that area. There is so much to learn! In the mean time I will keep going with the shampoo soap and vinegar rinse, my hair seems to like it. To answer your question re. the oils, there is no more oil in this recipe than in any other soap recipe, and it is calculated to have just the right amount of excess oil (3% superfat) to leave a tiny bit of oil on the hair without it being greasy. I find that my hair feels good and is shiny with this soap, but if you have really oily hair you might need a lower superfat or a different combination of oils. This is why the recipe is made with a small oil batch (500g - my usual recipes are 1kg or larger). I hope that helps! :)

I would be really curious to know if this ends up with a different PH to other soaps. Have you ever tested one of these batches of shampoo soap? Have you used regular soap on your hair before? Is there a noticeable difference to when you use the ACV soap? Also, can you use a lye calculator as normal for making an ACV recipe or it is a different conversion. I am curious because I would think that the ACV would neutralize the lye somewhat making it necessary to use more to be sure that the oils were sufficiently soponified.

Such a good question. No, the ACV barely makes any difference. The pH of this soap is exactly the same as any other handmade CP or HP soap! The texture and feel is slightly different, but the ACV is not a strong enough acid to have any really significant effect. Just a fun experiment really :)

Great explanation ! I have a few questions 1) Is there any difference in quality of HP Soap and CP soap ? (As HP soap is forced for a quicker saponification where CP soap takes it longer ) Do they give equal benefits for our skin ? 2) Can we make 100% olive oil HP soap? 3) what would be the curing period for 100 % Olive oil HP soap ?

Thanks Dr! The main differences are cosmetic, HP soaps have that rustic look, and obviously saponify faster. Yes, 100% olive oil soap is beautiful made with HP. I always cure my HP soaps for about 4 weeks, however it depends on the water amount used in the recipe.

Hi Ellie, I've been having issues with scorching my essential oils in cold process soap. Is the HP method any better? I always end up with very light sent that fades completely away after few weeks of curing and I would prefer not to use the fragrance oils (I ordered one anyway just to try and see the difference but haven't tried it yet). I just found it very disappointing to use expensive EO and then end up with fragrance free soap 😩... thank you for your response 😊.

I'm wondering how your EOs would get scorched with a CP recipe? Are you using hot ingredients? I think if you're having trouble with them lasting in CP then HP won't be any better. What EO's are you using? Some are notorious for not lasting very well in soap. Also if you buy your EO's online from a bulk supplier you'll find it much more affordable.

I just found your channel and am loving what I see. Watching this one I'm thinking what do i need to buy, Woohoo, sunflower oil. This is definitely on my make list. Thankyou for sharing.

I always enjoy watching your soap making videos. But I must ask, why you didn't use a crockpot? And if I wanted to use rosemary infusion water with the apple cider vinegar could I use half of each product then add the lye? Tanks for the lessons, I have been learning a lot!

Hi, I do normally use a crock pot for my hot process soaps, I just chose to demonstrate a different method with this video. And yes, your strategy for the rosemary lye solution sounds good to me!

Hey Elly, I was interested in exchanging some of the oils to tailor this recipe to my specific hair needs. I used the same quantities, however broke them down & substituted. Hi Cynthia, I'm not an expert on what oils are best for hair, but I guess it's worth a try! Did you run the new recipe through a soap/lye calculator? You would definitely need to do this to make sure the lye amount is correct for the oils you are using. Yes I calculated it, for 3% excess fat I'd need 68g of lye and for 5% 67g lye. I'm just trying to make sure it'd be safe and a good mixture.@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking

Yes it lathers very well but because it is soap it feels different in the hair than store bought shampoo. Surfactant shampoos are very different chemically to soap. But yes, it lathers! :)

Hey Elly! Could you make this soap with CP with the vinegar and lye? I’m not a fan of the texture of HP, I already wash my hair in home made soap 🧼

Made your coconut/rice bran oil laundry bars yesterday - a double batch. It came out so nice. Cooked it in a cast iron enamel pot. I too got a great big overflow on medium low stove top (now I know). Finished it in same pot, lidded in a 170' f oven for 2 hrs. Got 8 BIG cubes which I will try out as dish soap too. Tried my 1st liquid soap which has a phenomenal lather & scent but a little cloudy. Definitely will try this bar shampoo recipe as Im finding I like cp process as its so much more straight fwd. Prefer your mellow voice to subtitles. 😊. Thx yet again.

Yes, absolutely it can! Just leave out the second portion of vinegar, blend to a light or medium trace, mix in your essential oils and pour into the mould. I think I'll be making this CP myself next time. Thanks for your question 🙂

Hi Lisa, the final pH is about 8-9, as it is for any handmade soap recipe. The ACV is not acidic enough to really affect the pH of soap - the lye is far more alkaline than the vinegar is acidic :)

@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Actually Vinegar is only 3 points away from equal in acidity than lye is caustic on a scale. Vinegar has an acidity of around 2.5 and Lye is around 11 as a base. So if you correct based on these numbers you end up around 6-7 which is neutral PH, possibly even on the acidic side. That doesn't mean that soap will be acidic, that's impossible, but rather that it could be higher in superfat.

@@saborguerito Not exactly the whole story...the molarity (related to concentration) of the substances play a part in the reaction as well. We're talking about roughly 5% ACV solution vs pure NaOH. Different reaction if we were mixing both pure compounds in the presence of water.

I just made this today. It was straight-forward and I had all the ingredients on hand except the sunflower oil - used avocado instead. Have done hot process soap before but not ever in the microwave. It was fairly quick except my microwave took quite a bit more tries to make it frothy (like 6x). Anxious to try this out on my hair. Thanks for the post!

Hi Adrijana, you can swap the canola oil with olive oil in this recipe. I hope you can get olive oil!

Yes, in fact you can use any kind of vinegar.

Today i made your orange peel soap but i used lemon peel and lemon fragrance and turmeric to colour it yellow...being lemon and all. I have made several of your soaps and they always work out perfectly. I am definitely going to make this shampoo

So ACV doesn't neutralize the lye like regular vinegar does

This ACV is the same strength as any regular vinegar, but in this amount it is not strong enough to neutralise the lye. Vinegar is far less acidic than sodium hydroxide is caustic, so it cannot be used to fully neutralise lye.

I love your channel so much! But I would recommend if you wanna make shampoo to just make shampoo bars. They only need 5 ingredients and it's the perfect pH for your scalp. 💓🌺 Thanks for all the videos!

yes vinegar is kniwn to be germ-killing so, it is good to know from you madam ellen that it could also be incorporated with soap bar making to make shampoo. I am now excited to make also mine and imitate all of your ingredients so as not to make mistakes. I have no oven but I'll try making in a double boiler. thanks for the video madam ellen. more power to you.

Fun demo! I'll have to try this with my home made ACV. I do enjoy a soap based shampoo for clarifying. I must say I've never used my microwave for HP but am going to give this a try! Thanks so much :)Jen

Dear Elly, A couple of months ago I made my first soap. My husband, a retired mechanic, has been helping my son fix his car. They walked in the door looking like true grease monkeys. I told them to try my soap (first use) and it was unbelievable how it cleans. I was more impressed than they were. I had now idea it would work so well. I have collected all the ingredients to make your shampoo and I was wonder what the size of your mold was. Love your videos. Am learning alot. Thank you so much.

Hi Pat, thank you for your lovely comment, I'm always surprised at how well home made soaps clean too. They're even great for getting soap scum off the shower screen! I don't have this mould anymore, I'm sorry, but at a guess I'd say it as about 25-30cm long, 6cm wide and about the same deep. Thanks again :)

I forgot to add, just make sure you have your soap in a big enough container - microwave HP is easy with some basic precautions :)

Thank you! I love your photo wiht your cat! My cat is similar looking, but black and white :) Yes, they were cicadas in the background, similar to crickets. Some times of year they are super noisy here! We have lots of wild birds around too.
