@@lunar686 Nah in theory they'll live longer (there are some studies that suggest if you're currently under the age of 40, you could live to be 140) BUT tanning is still in trend. There's nothing that ages you faster than excessive tanning in your teens and 20s. 30s is still considered a young adult, but if someone tans constantly in their teens and early 20s, by the time they hit their late 20s and early 30s, the effects of the tanning WILL begin to show and thus they'll feel like they "lost their youth" or "are past their prime".

@@NinjaKittkattnot really, but I’m also from an Australian context. Most kids go to school where they can’t go outdoors for breaks without sun protection (millennials onwards) so generally only people that ‘tan without the can’ here are all the tourists lmao. I’m guessing it’s different elsewhere in the world. It would be interesting to know whether people had worse outcomes from sun exposure or smoking? I’m quite sure most of the effects of smoking are reversible if you quit early enough (I think research suggests 7 years), but I’m not sure if the same is true for sun exposure. All I know is combining both would have really bad outcomes

@@Othillde just like all the people that eat excess sugar 😢. Lol I’m not defending the addiction, but we live in a world where people who drink alcohol are ‘concerned’ about the lung health of smokers without realising their own bad habit of choice is far worse (the reason you smell alcohol on the breath is because it’s in the lungs), and one of the worst things you can do is feel prolonged stress, even many athletes have ‘bad’ teeth due to the bone mineral loss 😓...I guess what I’m trying to say is health is more complex than ‘this bad/that good’, might be better to promote how many of the ill effects of behaviours like smoking are reversible, because one of the main reasons people don’t quit is they actually don’t experience many of the ‘aesthetic’ side effects

Dude on this note I was at a dollar tree once, there was this women with a baby. We thought she was the grandmother. But then we heard her arguing with her mom on the phone about her smoking addiction. Her mom was on speaker and she dropped the ladies age. Said she was 26. Also said shed been smoking since she was 10. The mom was begging her to just stop and see how serious this is. This women looked insanely old. Leathery, thin, wrinkled, just old and her voice was shot. Like I can't help but wonder if it was a social experiment considering the speaker phone and her mom casually bringing up her age and stuff. But she reaked and looked like she was aged by smoking. I'll never know I guess, but it was concerning to see.

"i smoke in a french girl kind of way uwu" cool i smoke in a depressed and suicidal kind of way. cigarettes are made to taste and feel good precisely so we get addicted and buy more. it feels extremely shameful to have a smoking addiction and seeing young people on the internet think its cool is heartbreaking. i am 21 and trying my best to overcome this, and i hope that if you are also in my situation that you can do it too. we'll beat this together final edit: thank you so much for the supporting comments 🖤

No matter what these sort of Tiktok trends are showing, smoking is still very looked down on in most of the states. You cannot smoke publicly, you HAVE to go to designated smoking areas, and people WILL give you dirty looks/ cough loudly and purposefully around you if your smoke is blowing into walking paths. There is still a strong sense of shame around smoking here.

Its all about the type of media and influences you are exposed to at a critical moment of you brain development. Although smoking has always been framed somehow as smth cool and chic, in the last 10/20 years this framing wasn’t as prevalent as in the previous generations and as it is now thanks to tiktok and pop culture in general. If you see it over and over as smth “cool” and glamurous (even if in a trashy way you can portray glamour) more than as a harmful, kinda sickly and gross way, then ofc your perception of it is gonna lean more towards “I want to reproduce this in my life”

As a Gen Z woman, I am so sad about this. I started noticing this trend after hearing about some K-pop artists I like smoking. I always try to tell myself, "If they're not doing it near me, I shouldn't freaking care," but the thing is that people not doing this near me yet sharing it to social media and stuff can lead others, specially younger kids, to think that it's "just a cool thing" and that worries me. I'm still "coping" with knowing that my older brother smokes, even though he never does in front of me or the rest of my family, and he's super stressed from work and other stuff in his life. Now imagine hearing that people on the internet are doing this thinking it's just a trend and not realizing the hold nicotine can have on you. It pains me to witness how my generation is paving its own roads to self destruction.

@@HM-nt7vr it’s not exactly a ‘trend’, if it wasn’t so deadly it would actually be the best treatment option. Oh, I wrote a comment a few minutes ago on this video, I tried going a lil more in depth on that point if you were interested and had the time to view it (more regarding the utility for mental health). It’s that many in your generation have rather severe mental health challenges, reducing rates of smoking and other substance addiction, means fixing the problems that cause it. At least in the early stages of the addiction, smoking is a ‘symptom’, not a ‘cause’. It will very much become a cause of some severe health issues, but it’s one of the few addictions people can quit early enough and return to normal health as if they never started. The trick is learning how smoking assists each person, and substitute it with something that will improve their lives in both the moment and the long term

  • @HM-nt7vr

    @HM-nt7vr

    10 ай бұрын

@lunar686 I read your comment, and I do agree with you to some extent, but there's another aspect to this situation: not everyone has a mental health condition. Being a part of this generation, I know that a lot of us do indeed struggle with our mental health. I do so myself. But, more than anything, I can't stop thinking about those who don't struggle with it, especially the very young and impressionable children that are now being introduced to the internet even earlier than Gen Z did, that have no idea that that is what's going on, so they start mimicking these behaviors thinking that it simply looks cool. To them, it will just be a trend until they realize they're putting their health on the line for the sake of wanting to fit in and be cool like the people they see on the internet. I have a nephew in his early teens, and I'm worried about the type of things he'll see and be influenced by. Of course, he has parents who do their best to monitor what he consumes, but, realistically, it's not (always) enough. And, though, like you said, if we were to take all the negative impacts from smoking, it'd actually make a fair treatment for certain mental health issues, that's not the case. So the people that "self-medicate" with smoking are unfortunately just adding another problem to their own lives in the long run. It's all bad, no matter how I look at the situation. All I can hope is that we can realize what harm we are causing ourselves early on because I don't want to see the future that our present is cutrently leading us to.

It's so worrying how smoking has been portrayed as 'cool' in movies for so long. It's now moved its medium and form. I for one don't smoke, but my sister does and tbh I hate that she's doing it, but I also know why she started and I hope that she'll realize that she doesn't need it in her life once she's overcome her problems. And since my grandfather died 3 years ago due to lung cancer after heavily smoking for decades, I really don't want that to happen to her. Anyway, thanks for covering this topic.

I quit nicotine a moment ago (44 days clean!) because I just couldn’t afford it anymore and I had just taken up running again so I need my lungs in the best condition they possibly could be. Something I instantly noticed was the almost snarky comments from my friends how I’m suddenly in my ”healthy girl era” and it almost made me feel like I’m doing something to quit addiction at the wrong time, that right now when we are glamorizing the unhealthy lifestyle, replacing meals with nic for weight loss etc., I could have just continued for a year or so and then quit. Happy to say I have lost more weight in my ”healthy girl era” than in the many years of my ”nicotine for breakfast era”.

i'm so glad you made a video about this! I'm your peer and as a kid and a teen, i HATED smoking, never had cigarette even now in my 20s and have always been super proud of never participating in that. But it has always looked so cool to me, especially in old gangster films, so even though i know i will never smoke or want a partner who's a heavy smoker, i do find myself conflicted sometimes on this subject. But at the same time, hearing about emma chamberlain's secret vape addiction, it did piss me off, because it is the same with plastic surgery, i would just rather people tell us they do that than be hypocrites

The public isn’t owed any information, Emma is not a hypocrite for not sharing a struggle. If she openly condemned smoking/lied about smoking, that’s a different thing - same with plastic surgery (though I would differentiate with plastic surgeries and portraying certain beauty standards). Addictions are incredibly personal

Everyone can do as they please, as long as I don't have to breath the smoke myself inside or that they don't throw cigarettes in the street I don't care. I'll just be worried if the person is close to me. But seeing people starting because of socials makes me sad. They'll definitly regret it. I thought smoking wasn't seen as "cool" anymore and that less and less people from younger generations were doing it... Big support to everyone dealing with this and trying to get better. Addiction is cured through connection. Find fun activities and goals where smoking and drugs would get in the way of enjoying it (not just from an ‘external’ no-smoking law kinda thing, but from an ‘internal’ motivation like difficulty hiking lol). Remember that those early 00s ‘intervention’ shows where connection was threatened caused more harm than good, and definitely didn’t change the behaviour at all

Such an interesting topic.... I've been thinking about how smoking became a trend again recently as well. I see a lot of people around me start smoking or vaping, even though they've been those people who never wanted to start. I myself feel a lot, how attractive smoking seems. Still, I am glad I can keep myself away from smoking. I can see myself how I'd use cigarettes and vapes to cope. So yeah... pretty interesting I think, thanks for uploading ❤

It’s sad that these people think smoking is ‘cool’ or ‘aesthetic’ when there are literally people who are depressed and suicidal that used smoking as a coping mechanism. As a person who started smoking at a very young age and the result was so quick (I suffered GERD that can be caused by smoking), this needs to stop.

The timing of this video interacts with my life in an interesting way. A few days ago, a member of my family who has been smoking for about half a century had a health scare, had to have emergency surgery, and is now awaiting test results. We're praying it's not cancer, but statistically it probably is. She's a very loving and involved grandmother a few times over, but they are all very young. If she dies now, they won't remember her. She's always been model thin, and for as long as I can remember, her biggest reason for not quitting smoking was a disproportionate fear of weight gain. Now, her biggest fear is that she might die decades early, and never get to watch her beloved grandbabies grow up. That's what the young women who jump into this trend are getting into. Don't do it- because it all seems fine until it's too late. Everyone thinks it won't happen to them. She thought it wouldn't happen to her, because none of her siblings have ever had cancer- but it can and will happen to ANYONE. 😢

Out of curiosity, what possesses a person to smoke like AT ALL? Especially for these types of "once in a while, social smokers". Is it not absolutely disgusting, smelly, vile, and gag-enducing to breathe that toxic smoke in? In some ways I can understand when someone is addicted and just can't stop themselves, but the people who only do it once in a while... how are you able to ignore the complete NASTINESS of ciggs? I don't agree with vaping either, but at least it can smell like cotton candy or something pleasant.

I was vaping for a year and a half, quit because i'm afraid of premature aging (sadly i was the main reason). I fell down the rabbit hole very slowely, from one vape lasting me a month to needing a new one every 1-2 weeks :( So happy I'm clean for a half a year now. But the process of giving up was horrendous... We all know about lung cancer and aging, but for some reason nobody tells about psychological side-effects. It is horrendous how nicotine messes up your dopamine and other receptors, the longer you smoke, the more you irreversibly mess up your brain... When i first quit i was so angry, infocused, aggressive all the time, I couldnt work and would gain some weight.. I am so happy i quit.

It's my biggest regret, I damaged my health, spent a ridiculous amount of money on it over the years, and now even though I've quit I still struggle sometimes. Please don't do it, and if you're a teen and you already started, quit

This topic is terrifying to me. I started vaping a few months ago, because my work friends did (I'm not proud of it). As a person who has a history with EDs it triggers me into that unhealthy mindset, because I already lost some weight due to nicotine abuse. Now I'm trapped in a thought, that if I stop smoking I'm going to gain weight, which is a terrible way of thinking. Smoking should never be romanticized, just because you do it "not to destroy my lungs, but for the *aesthetics*" doesn't mean it's not harmful. Growing up, smoking was viewed as something disgusting that only dumb people did, I can't believe that now more and more people are returning to this awful habit.

😤 I think smoking is perceived as something sophisticated because compared to other types of product consumption, it is not associated with most of corporeal processes - digestion, hydration and metabolism as such. Smoking requires just as much gesticulation as eating (never underestimate the beauty of hand movements) but doesn't make you think about bodily functions, so of all intakes it is perceived as the most spiritually pithy and materialism-free.

Might just be where I live but going out to restaurants/clubs/bars etc. I definitely see and most importantly smell an increase. A lot of establishments turned no smoking over the years but I feel like that's definitely not the case anymore. I went out with friends to a new club recently and oh boy it smelled so fucking bad. One week later and I can still smell the smoke on my pillow, clothes and hair. I know that smoking inside was a lot more common years ago but it was never really something I had to pay attention to as an adult but that isn't the case anymore. So for anyone that can't stand the smell: Please look into new establishments now bc even if they are catered to younger generations you really can't assume they are no smoking areas anymore.
