Lint from the dryer in a cardboard egg carton with a little bit of paraffin wax has never failed me.

This is pretty much what we do. Lint from dry, small waxy Dixie cups, go to yard sales buy there wax candles, go home melt them down pour over the lent stuffed in the cup. Lol sometimes your fire starter's smell realy good.

I got cotton ball soaked in Scentsy wax when the wife asked me to change out wax for her one ball burns for 8 min in windy conditions 15 in ideal conditions

In my experience anything that contains oils will burn with the black smoke including fatwood. I don't think that necessarily implies toxicity, but I would not want to breath that stuff in either. Thanks for this honest product review.

I was going to make the same reference to fatwood. As a firestarter, I wouldn't put to much into the smoke simply because it is only to start the fire.

I agree, black smoke doesn't mean it's some nasty chemical that's gonna hurt you unless you sit there and huff it or something. Anyone who has started a fire with birch bark knows that lol, talk about your black smoke...

Agree, you don't want to breathe in any kind of smoke. I don't think the non-toxic claims are aimed at the smoke. Seems like common sense to me.

Back in my day companies were sued for false advertising.

Rather than doing such a public service, lawyers today go for bigger scores where more emotion is involved.

As a Brit I assumed they meant a ball that was made from an actual quarter (1/4) of the stuff, so $3.75 a go for 4 goes. yeah that's pricey.

Luke, thank you so much for making this review. I bought this junk over a year ago and I tried starting it with a ferro rod and once I finally lit it I put it out and tried to relight it. No go on that. Without a doubt your review is right on, beware of this product and stay clear of it. The reviews on Amazon are showing 4 to 5 stars but that because they say they will send you a free canister if you leave a good review.

Really appreciate that you will purchase these different items and give a review. It’s eye opening and disheartening at the same time. Really appreciate the honesty, thank you!

I’ve had decent luck with this product but it was during dry non windy conditions. Yes, the black smoke is a no go for me. This stays in my kit for a ‘no crap I need a fire now’ situation. They must have changed their formula because I’ve had no issues with a fire steel getting it started. Thanks for the quality work you do.

Thank you Luke. This stuff is absolutely trash. Holy crap what garbage. Bigfoot Bushcraft fire plugs put this to absolute shame.

Thank you for checking these products for us. It is nice to have someone to tell us the truth with no agenda.

I’ve been using this as a guide for several years now. One of your failures was not pulling out enough fibers. There is a bit of a learning curve, but I’ve bought and gone through several cans of this. Still carry it in my pack and get many fires out of each can.

Now refill the tin with better homemade versions at 1/10th the cost or less.

Great video again. I have some of this, came with a BOSS kit I received as a gift, but have not needed to use it. It's not in my emergency kits. I thought it would be like the LightMyFire tin, but nothing like it. May just keep it for use to start fire in the fireplace at home, but I agree on the tin - use it to make some charcloth.

Lol. I just dip some cotton balls in fragrance wax melts when they’ve burned off the smell, let them cool on parchment paper and toss in a ziploc bag. They’ve always worked for me. Thanks for your honesty Luke!

It really chaps my @$$ when companies sell a product that is intended to possibly save your life in a crisis.. and it's just ineffective. How do these people possibly sleep at night, they have no honor or sense of right and wrong. Very thankful when things like this are pointed out, hopefully anybody who is thinking of buying this product finds this video and spends their money on something that actually could save their life....

It's not about feeling bad for someone who buys it. I so no issues in buying some of these things. What I wouldn't feel sorry for them, is if they didn't test it first to make sure it's a good product. Failing to test any kind of product means that you're gambling on your odds being for you or against you. We do the same for tents, knives, packs, ect.

Hello Luke, as a Girl Scout back in the 80s I was told to put corn chips in my backpack as a emergency fire starter if it’s a nice day. I think I’ll keep putting the corn chips in my bag. Thank you very much for showing us how horrible this stuff was and is keep it up please. Kathy

Awesome review as always; thank you. I'll stick to my cotton balls & vaseline. I use a dip can..small, light, durable, semi water resistant.

So... I got a small sample of each summer and winter with something I bought a while back. I later bought a tin of it but as I recall i didn't pay very much for it off a site that sells stuff discounted. Last week I went to the woods to try out my new Solo stove and have lunch. it was probably a few degrees below freezing and I used the Winter sample to start my Solo stove. It worked just fine, I used a lighter to start it. With that said after watching your review I am going to try and find something better if I plan to go farther than a quick walk into the woods for lunch. Thanks!

Well, I suppose you could use the can to store other things... but there are a whole lot of other cans that size that are much cheaper.

You can get a whole bunch of empty cans that can hold more and make yourself some fire starter and still cost less overall. If this worked as advertised, it would be ok, but it doesn't. Corn chips work better than this.

I love emergency fire starters. Good they these are found in the woods as birch bark, fat wood, cottontails, and so fourth, lol. Only other emergency fire starters I'd actually buy are the UCO storm proof matches.

I agree. Black smoke can't be non toxic. If it was really non toxic, the makers wouldn't hesitate to put the ingredients on the can.

Love the honest reviews. To be fair anything you burn is "toxic" even 100% natural items. It just a matter of how toxic they are. Way over priced. It's so eazy to make your own including "tin" for a quarter or less of that cost

Burner brand fire starters on Amazon (UK) 100 drum for £10 or 500 drum for £30. Best fire starter I have used. Indefinite shelf life & "non toxic". Either light the wrapper with a lighter or slice it to expose the flammable interior & use a Ferro rod. Solid 5 plus min burn time. Small flat sachets so you can carry a lot of them without taking up much space.

@@brians7727 yep. You can also use duct tape for a fire starter. Not only are these items inexpensive, they have multiple uses besides just starting a fire. Then when you are home and not camping, they have multiple uses there too. Fire starters are gimmicky, and have only a single use for them and only when you are camping. Which makes them a complete waste of money and something people shouldn't put in their pack.

Trangia. Butane accessory. Works every time. I also love my MSR Dragonfly. Keeps people away lol The usual unbiased review here. Cannot beat this channel

Whoa whoa whoa. I own this stuff, and it's a gem. A small amount burns for more than long enough to get anything that isn't soaked to catch. I've used it camping countless times, and it just... Works. Catches either the first or second spark off a rod every. Single. Time. Hell, once I placed an Amazon order, and one of the tims was badly dented. All I wanted was a new tin, but they sent me a full on replacement. Of COURSE you need to "pull it apart." Come on. This is just running down a product to run it down. Honestly, I've used far less than the "quarter size" used here (of both the summer and winter type) and had no issues. Fluff a bit with a twig, spark, and set your tinder. This sort of review legitimately makes me wonder about this channel, man. Like, I have hands on experience with this stuff, and the grips just... It runs me wrong. I'd considered sending my other favorite firestarter for testing, but now I feel like it wouldn't get nearly a fair shake, so I don't want to harm the company.

Dude…I have the ultra light kind and used it in all seasons with no issue. Strikes with a ferro rod easily when teased a little and burns great. Not sure about the winter one but I’ve had good experience with their ultralight putty. Doesn’t take much to start a fire with it. And I’m not sure why they have different seasons because you can just keep the warmer weather ones in your pocket during winter.

I made my own fire starter, using dryer lint and candle wax from Amazon. I made a sheet of it on a cookie tray, with wax paper underneath so that it could easily be peeled away from the tray. A small (maybe .5"×.5") square from it burned for around 7 minutes (if I remember right). It took a little longer than I wanted to light, but that is because I think that I added too much wax (I will add less wax on the next batch). Overall, I was much happy with my first attempt at a cheap fire starter than I was expecting.

Just shove some dryer lint in an empty toilet paper tube. Works great. Might try to put a little Vaseline in with it to keep it a little more water proof.

@Vampire Jesus I did something like that last time I went camping, but I wanted something that might be a little more water resistant and would prolong the amount of time that it would stay lit. The lint, and a little bit of hand sanitizer mixed in, lit extremely well and helped getting a fire started everytime.

There is one more feature of this product that wasn't mentioned or tested, and that is that it glows in UV/black light to "discreetly mark trails". If that works, then that seems to be the most useful feature of this product. A trail marker that doubles as a perfect conditions fire starter. Thanks as always for your honest, unbiased reviews.

As a Boy Scout Leader, I would show the Boys how to make good Firestarters, using the old cardboard egg cartons, saw dust, cotton and parapae wax. So I could make 12 at one time that was cheaper and better than that container of junk.

I live in an area where pine roots are easy to get. Great fire starter. Same as fat sticks. I just keep a baggie of roots in my pack, even if wet it will go.

This is why here in the UK we have Trading Standard Laws meaning a product has to do exactly what the manufacturer claims or can be prosecuted for misleading advertising "Telling Lies", you could do with the same in over there.

Thank God we can trust your testing! This company needs to be held accountable for advertising and selling such a crap product.

You can use the tin to make char cloth. Also, work well to carry cotton balls in. An ultra-lite hiker would probably pay $13.00 for a tin can.

I can't speak about the winter blend but the summer blend works fantastic every time I've used it.
