While I was listening to what Romney I started thinking how can you even compare our military by size to 100 years ago. 3-5 single modern fighter jets can do what the entire Navy had 100 years ago. A single destroyer is so advanced that it could probably wipe out the entire world NAVY of a 100 years ago.

You're missing the point of the argument entirely. Romney is taking a statistic based on size of our navy and implies that the smaller size makes our navy weaker. Obama points out that military doctrine has changed, which implies that we have a smaller, but more effective navy.

I am not going to attack. I am retired military who dug foxholes and fought. I thought it was funny. I think Obama knew about the green berets on horseback. As commander in Chief, he should have. I know what fix bayonets mean as a soldier, but I never have had to mount a horse. If you can't support either, don't vote. That is your right. Good luck whatever you do.

What I see is Obama making the point of even though we have less hips than we did in 1917, the ships are a lot more advanced these days then they were back then, and even if we have fewer ships today they are far more capable and powerful than the ships back then. They did have subs back then, but they certainly didn't launch nukes, and aircraft carriers didn't come in until the 1940's.

Uh, no. They're issued bayonets -- of which none are ever used in combat. You know what works great in close quarters combat? A gun. A bayonet is a absolute, last ditch weapon when you're totally out of ammunition and can't retreat. They're only issued because a spear is better than throwing rocks.

does the military use fewer bayonets? as with everything these guys say. yes and no. a 2011 article from a military newspaper Stars and Stripes (which is a Dept of Defense authorized news outlet) stated "the Army insists it has not abandoned the bayonet...they are still learning to use the bayonet, just in a different way.... The Army’s last bayonet charge happened in Feb1951 during the Korean War...U.S. Army units have not issued soldiers bayonets for deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan"

How did he get slammed? What Obama said is true but so is what Romney said. US Navy is the smallest it has ever been. They used to operate 16 carriers. Now they have 11. The technology is defiantly more advanced but that said, the size is still smaller.

My husband is currently in Aghanistan, and he flies drones. Drones are not there to replace soldiers, they are there to save soldiers lives. My husband flies a drone out before we send out soldiers to make sure we are not sending them into immidate danger or a trap. Therefore, they are not replacing soldiers, they are helping them to be safer!

I feel that hardly anyone who fact checked compared 1917 to 2012 for the horses and bayonets thing, rather than 1916 to 2012. Romney said "since 1917" since there were fewer ships in 1916 than in 2012, but there were more ships in 1917 than in 2012. Obama clearly made a mistake in replying with 1916 instead of 1917, but just about every fact checker I've seen compared 1916 to 2012 for the horses and bayonets anyway. Has there been a fact checker checking for the numbers of horses and bayonets in 1917 and compared them to those in 2012?

Marines use rarely use bayonets in combat. The last American bayonet kill was like 40 years ago in Vietnam! Now they just use them as tactical knives. Though, British Soldiers reportedly did have a bayonet charge in Iraq in 2004 killing 35 iraqi's, but all the the kills were really from gunfire.

The U.S. does, but they're virtually irrelevant in modern combat for any military force anywhere. They're main use was on muskets I imagine because earlier guns had a very long reload time. Now we have assault rifles, why would anyone need a bayonet?

I, as a true conservative, believe we can cut the military budget. Yes there is waste. BUT we can also get rid of the ignorant Obamacare, cut Medicare by 25%, Soc Security by 20%, and Medicaid by 20-30%, get rid of all earmarks, eliminate the departments of education and energy, Increase drilling and nuclear power, and balance our budget within 3 yrs while REDUCING taxes. But socialists would rather see us descend into chaos like Greece than do the sensible thing.

Seems some have either a issue with hearing or with basic comprehension. FEWER bayonets. That's true surely? In 1916 aside from a few heavy machine gun operators, every soldier had a rifle and bayonet. Now look at the diversity of the weapons of a modern infantry squad. The British still use bayonets, did so in the Falklands and since, in Iraq Still, Obama's point was valid, more so with aircraft carriers and nuclear subs. One was at the concept stage in 1916, the other science fiction,

Example, Somalia or hint "Black hawk down". It took a country with no experience to bring peace. Guess what, the country that took it there was Kenya championing the AU. Same applies to this argument, im sure you have all the experience, que is, have you won it?

The first WORLD WAR kinda changed things, ya know kinda like how cannons and rifles made sharp sticks or bows and arrows a tiny bit obsolete...if you don't believe me go ask the native american's...but then came the wonderful flying machines with rockets and missiles, not to mention machine guns, artillery and tanks...and Oh yeah the aircraft carriers and submarines SO WAY TO MISS THE POINT DUDE! Christ its not exactly a complicated concept to grasp, THINGS CHANGE! and as a result the issues of defense and the strategies employed, the tactics involved are little more sophisticated nowadays...meaning more than just basic arithmetic a child could perform is required to "accomplish the mission"
