HORSEPOWER vs TORQUE - Is Torque Horsepower? Simply Explained
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Horsepower (HP):
Horsepower is a unit of measurement that quantifies the rate at which work is done or the power generated by an engine. It was originally coined by engineer James Watt in the late 18th century as a marketing term to help sell steam engines. Today, it is widely used to describe the power output of engines, including those in cars, trucks, and industrial equipment.
In this equation:
Torque (lb-ft) represents the rotational force generated by the engine.
RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) is the engine's speed, typically measured in rotations per minute.
Key points about horsepower:
Horsepower is often associated with speed and top-end performance. Engines with higher horsepower ratings tend to accelerate faster and achieve higher top speeds.
It is crucial for applications that require sustained high speeds, such as racing cars and airplanes.
Horsepower is more relevant for evaluating performance in vehicles and equipment that need to overcome aerodynamic resistance and achieve high speeds.
Torque:
Torque, on the other hand, is a measure of the engine's rotational force or its ability to twist and turn. It represents the engine's ability to do work, especially at lower speeds. Torque is what allows an engine to move a vehicle or equipment from a standstill and perform tasks like towing, climbing steep hills, or carrying heavy loads.
Torque is typically measured in pound-feet (lb-ft) or Newton-meters (Nm), depending on the region. It is a critical factor in heavy-duty and off-road applications, where the engine's ability to produce high amounts of low-end torque is essential.
Key points about torque:
Torque is vital for applications that require low-speed power and the ability to overcome resistance, such as trucks, tractors, and construction equipment.
Engines with high torque ratings tend to feel more responsive and capable of handling heavy loads or steep inclines.
Torque is especially relevant for off-road and towing applications, where the ability to generate power at lower engine speeds is crucial.
In summary, while both horsepower and torque are important metrics in evaluating an engine's performance, they represent different aspects of that performance. Horsepower is associated with speed and high-end performance, while torque relates to low-end power and the engine's ability to do work at lower speeds. The choice between horsepower and torque depends on the specific application and the desired characteristics of the vehicle or machinery in question. In many cases, a balance between the two is ideal to ensure versatility and optimal performance in various situations.

Hi guys I just wanted to Introduce to you my other Channel "Kirkman's Academy" - which i'm just getting started. It's a go-to channel for simple explanations for hard to grasp subjects such as physics, maths and chemistry etc. Here is the link: www.youtube.com/@kirkmansacademy/videos . Thank you so much for looking, and if these topics interest you then I hope to see you the there. Many thanks indeed. Craig 😊👍
This should get more views. It's not the first video I've watched differenciating Torque and Horsepower, but it would definitely be the one to make me understand the best. Everything was explained slowly to help understand better, it was all well explained with tons of examples... And this only has like 300 likes?! I hope the KZread algorythm finally gives this video what it deserves

Tanks for sharing 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🇲🇽
What's missing from this explanation is the fact that the F1 engine could be geared down to the same rpm as the tractor engine, which would result in more than 6 times the amount of torque being produced at the wheels. The F1 engine has more than 6 times the pulling power of the tractor engine, in other words.
Thank you, finally i understand

You're welcome! 👍
It simply means that torque of the engine is the force produced by the combustion of fuel multiplied by the distance from main crankshaft journal to the center of the crankshaft.
Now turbo technology they're getting both out of diesel s
Power is electrical . volts times amps . Power is watts and is how meters charge customers.

Horsepower is a mathematical calculation of work being done. Torque is an actual measurable force. Torque can be multiplied, horsepower can not. I had an 1994 Chevrolet S10 Blazer with a 4.3 liter Vortec V6. My friend had a 1993 S10 pickup with a 4.3 throttle body engine. Both engines had 190 HP but I had 240 foot pounds torque and he had 170 foot pounds torque. I Tried explaining torque to him, but he said he would win a drag race because his vehicle was lighter...I SMOKED HIM!!!

Power=force x speed Torque=force x radius Some think that torque is force because it is multiplied by something they don't care about. Power is force multiplied by something they don't care about too but somehow power is "just a non existent calculation on paper that you can't actually feel and means nothing, it sells cars and only I know the truth and never look into power number because it is for stupids".
