Horse Training - Shoulder Fore How What & Why

In this horse training video, I will share with you why we do shoulder fore, how we do shoulder fore and what the aids are for shoulder fore. Shoulder fore is what we teach our horses before we teach them shoulder in. These are two key dressage exercises and should be part of the basis of your dressage lessons. I hope you find this video useful.

Shoulder Fore is one of the building blocks to teach your horse lateral work. I hope this video helps you to understand the reasons we do it and how to do it.

Very good to actually see the 3 tracks and the occasional stepping out of the outside hind leg! Thank you for the details!

Is shoulder fore the same as what has always been called in the UK shoulder in? If so it's a bit confusing to use both terms; surely this should be standardized for dressage? If they are the same thing I think shoulder in explains it better than shoulder fore because the shoulder is always at the fore of the horse and the hind quarters are behind. Could you please clarify? TIA. ❤

Aren’t the shoulders always in front of the engine. Could you please explain?

But...when do you use shoulder fore? Surely we always want the the off the forehind and carrying more weight. So do we do it all the time?

Great question.SF is a straightening exercise and in the beginning a young/green horse would not understand the aids to do it. Once my horse is far enough along in his training I use SF along with other lateral exercises to help him become "straighter" and more "ambidextrous". I hope that helps you 🙂
