What a surprise seeing a rat out at Horse Guards, glad you got a chance to chat with the lad; no one else would think to do that. I wonder how long until we see a snake show up? That had to be the most stupid thing I’ve seen at Horse Guards - bringing a rat, taking it out if it’s travel case and slobbering all over it. What would have happened if someone in the crowd nudged him and he dropped the rat. If it ran into the box the horse, already unsettled, would run out into the crowd. Then do people take notice of which way the rat runs while they’re trying to dodge being trampled by a horse? If it ran into the crowd it would cause mass panic, yelling and screaming cos rats aren’t particularly popular - no one will care if it’s with a “rat breeder.” Even Michael Jackson’s song to “his friend Ben” was about people’s view that a rat’s a rat. And the subsequent yelling and screaming would spook the horse to add a huge, frightened, iron shod horse into the mix. I’ve no idea what prompted him to bring a rat into a crowd and deliberately take it out of the travel case. If he didn’t intend to cause a mass panic and chaos where it would be a miracle if no one was injured then we can only assume he’s a half wit.

If he wanted to “show the horse to the rat” for some unfathomable reason he could have done the “look Ratty, there’s a horse” it with the rat still in its box. The whole performance was bonkers.

    Communication between a horse and rider is a two way thing. The rider communicates with the horse through the reins and their legs and the horse lets the rider know how it’s feeling through it’s body language. When a horse starts weaving it’s sending a very clear “I’m not happy” message. Obviously it can’t be more specific but it’s a fair bet that being surrounded by so many people it doesn’t know, being bombarded by so many smells it’s not used to and so many hands pawing at it could, most likely be the cause. A horse can detect one fly landing on it so imagine the sensory overload of all those hands mauling it cos, apparently, cameras won’t take photographs unless they pose with their hands all over the horse.

  • @valerienorton4371

    @valerienorton4371

    The horse also mainly communicates through its riders demeanor. If that trooper hadn't been as calm as he was that horse would have bolted. I was taught the horse feels through your arse 🤣🤣

    @@valerienorton4371 I’ve heard that said many times. The guard staying calm would go some way to reassuring his horse but it was still weaving. That he managed to get the horse through till the end of the hour without it bolting means the horse got the message that there’s nothing to worry about - no matter which part of his anatomy sent it.

    Whoa….too many people crowding poor Tempest!! He hasn’t been at HorseGuards for a while and he was not impressed. Verbious in the other box, with his little short stripe and white lips. He’s a real cutie. It really does seem to be idiots day out today…..I think Tempest would like to add a few profanities of his own regarding tourists tbh. You might be wrong about the horses reaction to the rat…….our horses barely blinked at mine, and I’ve had several around our horses often. Also his rat isn’t going anywhere.Pet rats want to stay with their people and I used to take mine with me all the time, travelling in my jacket. On my motorbike too….they loved that. And it’s a pet rat John, where do you think it’s been?? He didn’t pick it up in the underground for heavens sake. Pet Rats have fewer diseases than dogs and touching a rat is just like touching a cat or dog or Guinea pig. They’re soft and smell nice (if properly looked after)and are very smart. Verbious is such a sweet natured horse. Puts up with so much. And the movement Tempest is doing is called weaving, and it’s a sign of frustration/irritation. What I find crazy is that they all want to touch the horse that doesn’t want to be manhandled, and the one that doesn’t mind being touched is being treated like high explosives with a dodgy fuse!!! Humans are nuts!! Glad to see the crowd thinned out a bit. What on earth is that guy with the tripod doing?? Taking pictures of the guards nose hairs?? Then we moved to a prairie province that doesn’t allow them, lol. In any case, I would NOT take them out in a crowd, in front of horses, or on a train, knowing it would scare other people. That’s highly inconsiderate. Even if you know it’s tame and trust it, they don’t. Not the way to drum up business to sell the other hundred you’re breeding, I would say.

    On the subject of the rats 'Fancy rats' and they are bred purly as pets are amongst the cleanest animals and not to be confused with wild rats who are amongst the dirtiest, my son and i owned a fancy rat way back and was the sweetest pet i ever owned hope that helps john.

    The huge majority of fancy rats and fancy mice are bred as snake food. (I should be commenting from my "Crazy Mouse Lady" account. I've had about 60 pet mice over the decades, among other rodents.) EDIT: Wild rats also keep themselves fastidiously clean. Like cats, their saliva acts as a detergent. I'd argue that animals who don't clean themselves, such as feral dogs, are far dirtier.

    John was invited to see the preparation and the initial judging of the troopers for the Princess Elizabeth Cup st Hyde Park Barracks. Every other member of the official press was from papers, Forces News. John was the only KZreadr invited. So yes I think Horse Guards are aware of KZread and their followers. It was an honour for John to be invited. The final winner Trooper Jeffrey and Trooper (Horse)Monty was chosen at the Windsor Show. The winner trooper and 3 others where chosen to take part as a group at the Trooping of the Colours.

Unfortunate that the recurring theme centres round how dumb/stupid/disrespectful the rest of the clueless tourists are. That these beautiful horses and the soldiers continue to perform with perfection these ceremonial tasks, given the annoyances, is a blessing.

    John, these are not regular rats, as far as I know they are a special breed. My son as an adult, thanks goodness, had 2 rats. The kids loved them, they are very chill and cuddly. He bought them in a pet store, they are very clean. My son kept them in a huge cage and they meaning the family took them out supervised to pet them. He never took them outside like this guy.

    Good Morning John and thank you for tolerating yet another crush for us! I can't bear being surrounded by ignorant, shoving people and I'd have left my "post" just after it all started, so hats off to you. As for the moron taking stills of the Guards from incredibly closeup and at very peculiar angles (?), I felt that should definitely not have been allowed. That 'photographer' was flagrantly trespassing upon/invading their personal and working spaces in an arrogant and insulting manner that shouldn't be allowed.....the MOD is not a 'public space' in fact, and tourists are 'permitted' there because of the historical security on duty there, BUT they should NOT be allowed to take the mick like that! You do an incredible job spotting insult and protecting our military men and women and I think you and Buska should be given official appointments to take action and evict undesirables when the armed police aren't around!
