Reminds me of my younger days as we didn't get a tractor until I was 13. Four horses ( Molly, Sally, Bill, and Prince) My dad plowed with 3 horses using an International 1-16 plow. I enjoyed walking in the furrow behind smelling the soil and listening to the sound of soil turning over. Thanks for the video !

Well done Bob, nice to see some traditions still carried on. I'm old enough to remember some plowing going on (76), but more so seeing the Ragman's wagon, come by horse drawn, and the iceman when he delivered our ice for the icebox. I do not miss that beast, I was only 6-7 yrs old but had to empty the pan from under the icebox after it melted and drained out. and I don't think I ever made it to the door with out spilling some water on the floor. it was about 6inches deep, 2ftx4ft wide kinda heave for a young ladd like me. but we did what we had to do. thanks for the trip down memory lane!.

We are about the same age. The young will never know how it was back then. But then I suppose our parents said the same thing. The only difference is that technology is advancing so fast.
My dad always wanted to farm with horses. I told him he was nuts. But I can see the quiet, timeless appeal.

@farmerbob9572
7 жыл бұрын
+Lynda Laird Hi Lynda, Somehow I missed your comment about plans to convert a tractor plow to a horse plow. As far as I know there is no plans. I was lucky enough to copy off of someone who converted his plow. You need to remove the tongue off the plow and hook on with a Clevis where the tongue was. This might need to be raised or lowered Depending on the draft point. The draft point is determined by running a straight line from a point on the on plow share to the draft point on the horse collar. There are books out there as to how this formula works. The tongue for the horses needs to be fastened to the plow wherever it works the best.
@farmerbob9572
7 жыл бұрын
+Lynda Laird I forgot to mention that the point of draft straight line must intersect the point where the Clevis is hooked on.

so soothing to watch! I loved my time with my drafters....I miss it all....some say the time it takes to unharness and brush them down is a lot of work compared to just parking the tractor and turning the key to off and going inside....the bond and interaction with the animals is a reward after the job is completed....let the animals cool down under a blanket if they have been sweating....Brush the horses down..... always take the chill off of the water before watering .... then I gave my drafters a nice hot bran mash....they loved it!!!!! especially in cool or cold weather....purchase wheat bran from a feed mill....( never give a horse or mule wheat....but wheat bran is ok)....put bran in a feed container and add very hot water to just a little water level above bran.....stir.....let stand until this very wet bran mash is throughly wet throughout with NO dry clumps....and when pleasently warm to your finger ...feed....I gave a gallon bucketfull to each horse! It's filling...warm...and tasty to them and prevents colic! wet...and warm...and never dry! feed when they are cooled down...watered and brushed....they will love you for it....its a great source of phosphorus which is needed in their diet!!!!!

Real nice video Bob. We are about 70 miles from Lancaster County, PA. In early spring we take a ride out to New Holland and further south. The Amish men are often out plowing (never on Sunday). I think they always have 4, horses, but might be mules too. Always early in the day. Seems they only work them when it is cool. I suspect the horses enjoy it, they are good at it, like professional athletes. There is something quite fine about the whole thing. Thanks again Bob.

Hey Mr Bob, how do you like your New England D Ring Harness on ur perchs vs the standard western style harness like on ur Belgian/Morgan cross???? Just wondering if you could give me some opinions on the differences and likes/dislikes of each kind. Thx in advance and have a good day.
@farmerbob9572

+. flyboyzach07 Hi Flyboy, I'm not an expert on harness but I will tell you what I think I know. The crossbred horse Yogi, harness is the same as the Percherons except the harness on the Percherons require a small neck yoke and Yogi's harness does not. The design on Yogi's will have a lot less back and forth sway of the tongue, which is a good thing. The English people prefer Yogi's design and the Amish people prefer the little neck yokes just because it looks less modern. I think the D Ring harness is designed so the girth takes all the back and forth movement of tongue and nothing on the collar. This works well if adjusted properly with is tricky to do. Hope this helps. Let me know if you receive this, my computer is acting up.
thanks to show us....that is possible. Un saluto dall'Italia!
