    Honestly, having the film in first person is such a brilliant idea. It personally helped me connect with characters and dispise others. (Spoiler) Like, when the baby monkey was thrown away for being in the water, I personally felt hurt and angry like they'd thrown *my* child. I felt pain when I saw them get hurt and became so full of spite when the other monkeys laughed and refused to let the perspective protagonist and the others join them to stay warm.(end of spoiler) It's such an interesting concept that was executed so well!!! And the art style was absolutely beautiful!

    @@qmbikerider4583 not just male!! most primates, including these mountain ones that we see here have strict family hierarchies that dictate everything from what, when and where you can eat, sleep, live...etc. typically older FEMALE monkeys will uphold these hierarchies and hold the most power. you can see it in this video too - the baby wanted to go into the water because it saw the other baby monkey - whose parents are likely higher up in the hierarchy, playing in the warm water.

    It strikes me that the we actually get to see Her face at the end. The cam stays focused on her as if to say "...and now you know why" Its also eerie how apathetic the "in-crowd" monkeys are as long as the status quo protects them... especially in contrast with the protagonist, as shee clearly shows the species is capable of deep emotions. Well done.

  • @lookingaround3969

    Harrowing and painful to watch. The symbolism (if you will) at the end was heartbreaking yet incredibly powerful. It's amazing to view media through the eyes of an animal, let alone in a species controlled by a harsh social hierarchy. It's refreshing, and I could feel the pains and emotions that the protagonist and their' fellow monkeys felt. Otherwise, I'm speechless; what a film. The brilliant score, ambiance and FX added amazingly to the surrealistic animation and beautiful environment design. I admire your work, and the level of quality you produce. Well done Gobelins, on your final student production for your 2 years! You have truly saved the best for last. While I am sad it is over, I am glad it was all released in the level of quality and uniqueness that makes your school the top.

    I love how this was presented from a mother macaque's perspective - quite literally. She and her infant were basically peasants amongst the group; not allowed into the warmth of the pool due to their low social status. A bit like a chamber maid and her illegitimate child being kept outside in the cold streets while the duke and his noble friends enjoy a party inside a warm ballroom.

    I know some animals with high levels of intelligence have different social structures to those of humans and that we can't judge animals the same way we can judge people, but this animated short shows that animals can evolve to the point of showing cruelty and kindness. Also, even if this animated short isn't accurate about the social behaviors of these apes, I really like the storytelling and the animation techniques.

    It's very simple, intelligence means higher levels of love, and higher levels of cruelty as well, both things compliment each other, there's no way a kind of being, species, etc can only be capable of one of them. That's why this animals act like this, that's why we act like we act.

    One thing people need to know about this beautiful film is that NO IT IS NOT TYPICAL. I spent 3 days and 2 nights at the exact location in this film, Jigokudani Monkey Park. It is the only place in the world where the monkeys live above the snow line all year, as they can use the hot springs to warm up. The springs are plentiful and not so crowded that dominant monkeys need to guard them. In fact, the inn I stayed at there has its own hot spring which the monkeys of course do not respect...I used it together with the monkeys every day! They are very intelligent and not savage as depicted here, you simply have to respect their signals of dominance, meaning don't hold eye contact. Older males often help caretake the babies of the troop, and they are all very playful, rolling snowballs and playing games together. While they do sometimes play rough, I never saw a single instance of an adult threatening a baby, or of one of the troop members being turned away from warmth. This is a wonderfully animated story, but it's JUST a story.

    This is not animal behavior. It's human behavior. Do not mistake this for a documentary. Its plot is as "real" as Disney's brother bear. Nowhere near real, in other words. Only this short is missing significant abstraction and stylization, visual guides that help divide reality from fiction, so its not clear.

  • @NicoUnken

    @NicoUnken

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@Froggy-Frogs This IS animal behavior...... Do not mistake this for fiction. The Japanese Macaque (or snow monkey) actually bathe in hot springs for stress relief and to survive the winter. Lower ranking females and their babies are sometimes not permitted to bathe with the higher ranking individuals. Not every troop is this extreme (especially in designated area's specifically set aside for the monkeys), but there have been documentations of outsiders freezing to death, possibly due to their position in the hierarchy (or maybe other reasons we couldn't see). Obviously we can interpret more than just animal behavior from this amazing animation, but saying this "isn't real" is simply false. Check out some video's of them bathing in pools! You can really see how astoundingly realistic this animation actually is, and maybe learn yourself something.
