A Horrified Batman version would be pretty dang cool The playable Heroes could be: Batman, Robin, Catwoman, Batgirl, Commissioner Gordon, and Renee Montoya The Villains you're facing (and their starting locations) could be: •The Joker: Arkham Asylum •The Scarecrow: Ace Chemicals •Clayface: Monarch Theatre •Poison Ivy: Botanical Gardens •The Penguin: Iceberg Lounge •Two-Face: City Hall •Harley Quinn: Amusement Mile

As basic as the character ability sets are, and probably need to be, I imagine they would be hard pressed to make new abilities. They did manage to make an Alien game with only two characters with identical ability sets to Horrified characters, but only one new character had an ability that might translate well into Horrified without introducing new core mechanics.

on the rules, i'd say you should definitely completely read those breakdowns for the monsters in the back. we went to check one thing there midgame and found we had been doing other parts incorrectly (specifically for us, the footprints for bigfoot, but mistakes could be made with many of them without reading those details that are only explained in that section)

This is basically a standalone expansion. I'm not sure how much material was left to expand the Universal monster theme. I am concerned this is less an expansion than a reskin, a it looks like they're just renaming the characters. At least it looks like they made some new mechanics for the monsters.

Action is worded weird and unclear. The new jersey devil mechanism to decide who he really is is unclear and there are 2 cards which seem to me have 4 of the symbols on them and will cause confusion. My biggest gripe with this version is that the monster cards use initials instead of icons to denote which monsters are moving/attacking. I didn't think that the icons in the original game were so obscure that people couldn't tell which icon represented which monster. This seems like a lazy and more confusing revision.

I'm a huge fan of the classic Universal Monsters and I love the original Horrified so at first I was disappointed that it was a totally different theme, especially being Canadian I haven't really heard of any of these monsters besides Big Foot. But when I saw the artwork it piqued my interest. I love the old school style of it like 30's/40's movie posters. I'm interested in how the new monsters work and what you need to do it defeat each one. Since I do love the mechanics of Horrified so much I think I will pick this one up too even though I don't love the theme as much.

As a huge fan of the original Horrified, I had been hoping for an expansion on that even though I know the way it was designed would make an expansion difficult (I have ideas on how it could work, but I'm not a game designer so who knows if my ideas are good or not). When I bought this game and saw the monster cards with the X boxes on them -- the card he shows with the Jersey Devil and Frenzy symbols on them has one -- I wondered if maybe those boxes are a prep for an expansion? Maybe the expansion involves stickers for new monsters that can be integrated into the original monster deck? Just a thought... Not sure there are even enough of those cards in the deck to make that work. I'd still rather have more content for the original game, but I don't mind having multiple games with different themes. The more Horrified the better IMHO! (although I would beg that if they're going to release another one with a different theme in the future that they change/add mechanics a little bit just to keep things fresh)

Interesting -- I came here from another review that said there were a lot of mistakes on the game components and that two of the monsters - BigFoot and the Jersey Devil (IIRC) -- had serious issues -- Bigfoot in movement rules and the Jersey Devil in the victory rules. He alluded to a BGG post that he said proved mathematically that the Jersey Devil victory conditions could be impossible to meet in some situations. I was hoping to see corroboration or refutation here.

We've played all the monsters now in this set. There is a misprinted token that says "Police Station" but there is a "Sheriff's Station" and a "Ranger Station," so we house ruled it was the Sheriff's Station. That's the only misprint we found. However, yes Big Foot and Jersey Devil are the two hardest monster conditions to use. The Jersey Devil has you pull all the citizen cards out of the monster deck. We played in a four person game and taking these cards out shortens your card pile and makes playing harder, as you tend to use up the deck fast and that ends the game. Once you defeat him, you can reshuffle the remaining cards back into the monster deck. After our first loss, the best tactic seems to be to defeat the Jersey Devil first, or you won't have enough monster cards to play. Big Foot's movement rules are confusing and we've had a few arguements at the table about him. Big Foot won't go to a space with an investigator. Unlike all the other monsters and the regular rules, you roll his attacks first. If you roll his Power symbol, you move the terror track forward for each symbol. Then, no matter the outcome, he then moves like a normal creature. Since it says he won't move to an Investigator space, we assumed he would move to a citizen space. The issue is that if there are no citizens on the board, where would he move? Plus, he is the only monster that wants to avoid people, whereas every other monster hunts both investigators and citizens down. To make matters worse, to fufill Big Foots defeat conditions, you have to have him move around and drop footprints. We feel Big Foot should have had a seperate movement condition in his rules, giving him a different task to accomplish. So we house ruled that if there are no citizens he heads towards an investigor, but then he leaves right away, dropping foot prints as he goes. (They were trying to go for the feel of how Big Foot is always spotted by people but he never makes contact, cute idea, but didn't work game play wise). I think the rules should state that when he moves he goes the furthest AWAY from any figure on the board, that would make more sense and if he can't get anywhere, then he doesn't move that turn. We still enjoy the game, but it could use with a good erratum. Hope this helps.

@@dennispascale842 thanks for the detailed explanation. It sounds like you've come up with some good house rules for big foot. It's just a shame that's necessary. But it's good to know the problems aren't insurmountable. I can see it being a bigger problem for people who aren't really "gamers" or who haven't played the first one.

I own and love the original. While I'm sure this plays just as well as the original (it looks like they haven't messed with the winning formula), the theme puts me off buying this one. Maybe this is due to not being American, but I'm not familiar with any of the monsters apart from Bigfoot. The characters art also seems a little inconsistent and off-putting. The board and components look great, however. I'd definitely be in for a different version, especially if Ravensburger went with a licenced property like a medley of modern horror films (I think there's a fan-made reskin on BGG to this effect) or something else a little more thematic. That said, I'm sure this version (like the original) will be great for people who are into the theme.

Both versions are among our favorite games. They feel surprisingly different. Yes, the core is the same, and the hero powers are (surprisingly) identical. But the monsters are less predictable, which is part of why they feel "scarier" to me. A couple of the monsters are somewhat more complicated than the originals. The map is also very different -- without that lake in the middle, the grid allows quick movement ... and yet the map feels bigger at the same time. So if you love Horrified, and want more variety, you should probably own both.

That aspect has (mostly) not changed. One exception is that a couple of the monsters can only be defeated when they are at a specific location. So you might spend a couple rounds trying to lure them (if you don't have the right perk cards). If you're running low on time, that can be stressful. Generally, if you are running low on time, or if the terror track is getting high, you can have tension to the end. But as with the original, fairly often the game gets mellower as you defeat monsters.

There are similar cryptids in North American legends, like La Llorona in Mexico.

I think they were trying to have monsters from different regions. The southwest already has the Chupacabra.

@@TimByrd The banshee still feels oddly specific even if it checks out on closer inspection. I wish they'd gone with a hodag if they absolutely needed a Midwest cryptid, damn things are EXCLUSIVELY a Midwest thing.

I feel that companies need to stop associating Bigfoot with monsters and hurtful creatures. I would be more inclined to play this if the name was changed from “American Monsters” to something else. Or don’t use Bigfoot as part of the game. There’s a cultural significance of Bigfoot in most parts of Canada and its use in games and media needs to change.

For what it's worth, Bigfoot in this game never attacks anyone. It moves away from you. The negative effect it causes is raising the "terror" level of the town, which is not unreasonable. Lots of folks will freak out if a mysterious big hairy beast with unknown intentions is seen roaming around. And you don't kill it ... you just prove its existence via evidence.
