Every Saturday our professor would have us tour local museums and cathedrals so that we could see with our eyes what we discussed in class during the week. One weekend we went to the Crime and Punishment Museum in Rothenberg. It’s great. It has all of the tools of torture from the early Middle Ages to the Renaissance. I highly recommend it. Plus Rothenberg is a great little Medieval city. We spoke German then, required for class, but I believe signs were in English too.

    Yup. It bugs me when it’s someone who knows me well, because I require like three supplements to, stay alive and about five prescriptions due to an inherited illness. One major symptom is severe pain. So without pain control, I wouldn’t really... wanna live? Much less back then? And I’d be considered insane or something; people with pain didn’t tend to do well back then. And I’d most likely die in childbirth; everyone in my family has difficulty having kids and need help delivering, if not outright c-sections because we’re petite. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I also don’t heal normally, even with pristine treatment it can take a week for a simple cut to close. So... there’s just no way for me. If I didn’t die from lack of nutrients, if I didn’t die from childbirth, if I didn’t throw myself off a cliff due to the pain, I’d still be considered insane and unable to support myself. So like, no, no I wouldn’t like to go back in time. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ I hate people. 😂

    A little correction towards crucifixion (AFAIR): the most common mode (at least in ancient Rome) seems to have been upright and using rope to bind the person to the cross. So mostly the condemned died of asphyxiation when his/her muscles gave up and the body weight compressed the lungs, so it was impossible to breathe. This means breaking the persons legs was not exactly meant to make the suffering worse, but shorter - with broken legs you collapse and asphyxiation comes earlier - you probably die in less than an hour after that (forensics experts: weigh in please). If they wanted to prolong death they nailed a little support underneath the feet, instinctively at the last moment you'd push yourself up, breathe and live in agony for a few more minutes, then it all happens again and again until you are literally out of energy. Another reason to cut into a person was to determine whether that person was dead, since the way the blood flows out changes after death. Also I'm surprised the wheel was not on this list. But then again - we humans have been surprisingly creative in coming up with horrible things to do to each other, so some (a lot of) methods were bound to be "missing"...

    If they’re on a cross with the arms tied up how exactly does the body weight (just really the head and little bit from arms) crush the chest plate and rib cage to crush the lungs?

  • @KonradTheWizzard

    @KonradTheWizzard

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@soutano1924 You are thinking about the wrong mechanism. It's not crushed, just stretched and compressed. Since the legs are not really supported the (lower, not upper) body weight stretches the belly and chest downward. This compresses (tightens) the chest somewhat - try to stretch a shopping bag: you'll see it also gets tighter - the more you stretch it the less you get into it. In order to breathe the muscles in the lungs have to work against this tightness - this is not a problem for the first few minutes, but the muscles get tired and after a few hours the condemned suffocates because breathing is just too much work over all the other pain he experiences. Suffocation is one of the worst (if not the worst) ways to die, to experience this for hours must be hell itself - this method of execution is much crueller even than most people imagine. If you want to know more details: ask an expert for anatomy.

    @@KonradTheWizzard ok that explanation makes more sense I mean really if it’s just the hands tied up above them the legs wouldn’t even need to be broken, any unnecessary movement will require more oxygen, trying to take bigger inhalation’s therefore actually speeding up the process but I think it would just be suffocation like u just said not asphyxiation.

And since none country try to repair the mind of the individual, he's condemned to kill again. So for me, since we don't help people who can be helped nor kill people that are unrecoverable, then people against the death penalty actually do accept the future murder of a random individual. It's like a human sacrifice. Same with rape. It happens recently. A 15yo girl has been raped and killed by a multi-recidivist, who did his time in prison... This is what happened in the story of the crucifixion of Jesus. The soldiers pushed a spear into his side and "water" came out. The soldiers were actually surprised how quickly Jesus died. The two thieves crucified beside Jesus had their legs broken so that they would die and could have their bodies removed before the Sabbath. It is true that usually the bodies remained on the crosses for a long period of time but remember that the crucifixion of Jesus was demanded by the Jewish religious leaders and not the Romans. The Jewish religious leaders then asked to have the bodies removed before the Sabbath (Sundown Friday to Sundown Saturday). The crucifixion of Jesus was also recorded by the Romans and the Jewish religious leaders and not just in the Bible.

People were shoved into this metal effigy of a bull and then a fire was started underneath the device causing the victim to be roasted alive and the screams coming from inside mimicked a bulls screams of pain. Never been there, but have visited the London Dungeon, a torture museum in London. Pretty interesting place. Was a bit older than 6 years when I went there and was quite intrigued by the ingenious methods of inflicting slow pain and death on people that were on graphic display there. Sadly it now seems to have changed into a theme park complete with rides.

    Another form of capital punishment was “the blood eagle”. From Wikipedia: “The blood eagle is a ritual method of execution, detailed in late skaldic poetry. According to the two instances mentioned in the Sagas, the victims were placed in a prone position, their ribs severed from the spine with a sharp tool, and their lungs pulled through the opening to create a pair of "wings".”

    G'day Simon, During WW2, my uncle D'arcy, a member of the Australian 2nd/40th Battalion, himself a tortured POW of the Japanese, witnessed POWs being staked out on the ground and rats in a metal buckets being placed on victims' stomachs. Japanese soldiers would beat the bucket with sticks or bayonets and the rat would begin its gruesome escape. Uncle D'arcy was an expert axeman so his torture was relatively milder; consisting of beating, whipping and being forced to sleep at night with a heavy log on his legs. He was deeply psychologically affected by his treatment and what he witnessed. In later life, he became distressed even if a picture of a Japanese person appeared in a newspaper or on TV. D'arcy always used to refer to himself as 'one of the lucky ones'. BH

    The poor man- unbelievable treatment. My grandad ( UK) was out in Burma ( as it was called then) and saw some of the results of this ghastly treatment after the Japanese were being pushed back. He didn’t talk about it much but did tell me that many of the Japanese guards and commandants were hanged there and then. Serves them bloody right.

    I first learned of scaphism from the events originally recounted in the Anabasis of Xenophon. Cyrus the Younger had raised an army to overthrown his brother, the king. His rebellion failed and he was killed in the battle. The soldier who killed him and presented his head/body to the ruler thereby incurred the wrath of the queen mother, mother to both Cyrus and the king. She sentenced the foolish soldier to the boats. A mother's love.
