Poor baby! Glad she's with you, and not someone who would try and force the situation.

Hi, I really enjoyed your video with Shiney's head-shy problem. And I really appreciate your gentle approach with training. Yes, it's good to start by investigating for physical sources of her discomfort. Have you had a vet check Shiney's ear for internal pain after the tumour removal? Also want to mention that your method of speaking, (speed, clarity, etc) is great. Thanks!

Thank you for the feedback.... the vet hasn't found anything special about her ear after the tumor

Wow, congratulations on the persistence and breaking it down into bits. She definitely had progress.

I have been working with an incredibly ear shy/head shy mare who can't be handled or touched really and one thing that so far seems to be working for us is every day I give her daily feed to her in a feedbag and I hold the poll strap of the feed bag in my hand and rest the bottom of the bag on the ground. When she goes down to eat out of it I hold the strap so it lightly brushes over her eyes and occasionally touches her ears. As the days have progressed doing this now I have started to bring it over her ears and back while she eats. Since her head is all the way to the ground it keeps her really calm while still desensitizing her to the feeling of my pulling a strap over her ears. It's not perfect yet but it has made her a lot less bracey about it when we work on the halter. Shiney is doing great, that much trauma can be really hard to overcome, she obviously trusts you in spite of her fear or she would have run off the moment the halter was off of her.

Yes the way you describe is similar to how I teach my mustangs to accept a halter

Blood root ointment will take off cancer spots. It worked on my white cats ears and some spots on me. Nicer than burning chem. I think the nerve ends still tickle her and drive her nuts. The massage helps undo the tickle.

I have this problem with my horse i will work on for hours with her and by the end of the night she let me touch her ears without hesitation. But by morning it's like she forgets everything we just did.

That can definitely be frustrating.... there could be past trauma or pain

Aww, poor Shiney. So glad she is with someone who cares about creating positive associations with her ears instead of trying to really force her. Do you know if/when it will stop feeling sensitive? My horse has a similar problem sometimes but she didn't have a sarcoid or anything, she's just head shy. How would you go about helping her? She rears a lot and is pretty dangerous, I have sent her to trainers but nothing is working.

I'm not sure how long it will take.... when a horse has strong emotions I always start with looking for a physical reason and treating that first
