Definitely does! Applys to all those statements lol
If you're on city water and use that to fill. The city sometimes flushes the system with massive amounts of chlorine. They're supposed to notify all residents that will be impacted. Then you have to turn on all water sources to purge the chlorine from your system. If you don't that all ends up in your tanks! And yes it will kill African cichlids very fast.

I been there man. had an air pump quit on me that killed all my big beautiful piranhas in 1 night. fully planted deep substrate tanks. all my tanks are deep substrate even my Africans. I have tanks that havent had a water change in over a 1.5 yrs. but my african I will do a partial water change almost every 2 months but even then it's not necessary bc I use tons of floaters and the 6 inches of deep substrate is the filter. I never get spikes of any kind. and it makes my life so much easier. all my breeder tanks and show tanks have 1 inch of nutrient rich mud capped with at least 2 inches of pool filter sand and tons of plants. completely balances everything out the plants are starving they're doing such a good job. father fish on YT chamged my whole life. yup the city is full of crap luckily I got good Michigan well water. much love man love ya learn

I'd lose my mind if I lost that many fish at 1 time just from a water change, that's crazy, glad I don't do water changes & do water top offs instead. Sorry for the loss, it really sucks, but it happens I hope things get better soon, I'm rooting for you.

Did you unplug the heater B-4 you drained the tank ? that may have been the case, cause when you filled it back up the heater killed them, that sounds about right.

Sorry for your lost but I learn to have water put aside for my tanks. Tap water is not always clear to used for your tanks right away so have a small tank with water that was there 2days or more.

Yes, it was unplugged.
I’m sorry that this happened to you. I feel your pain. The same thing happened to me. I just moved to my new house and I lost 28 fish. I think they went into shock. I went from city water and well water. I thought I acclimated them long enough. I used stability, prime, and stress guard. I cried over my angles. They were my second favorite fish. I have a lot of live bearer fry in a breeder box. Once they get of size I can restock my community tank, but I will have to come out of pocket yo restock my other tank. Again, I’m sorry that happened and I hope you get to replenish what you lost. 💛💛💛💛

Oh no! im sorry to hear that, Losing fish is never fun 😪 definitely the worst part of the hobby and atleast you still have some fry to grow out, hope you get everything figured out as well 🙌
I had the same issue as well & traced it to the municipal water seemed to have something that was amiss. I have since bought a 50 gal. plastic garbage can that I keep water in for water changes (with a running air stone & APT/Prime chorine remover). No issues since.

It has to be chlorine but even that doesn't make sense. Temp unless it's a huge difference doesn't usually kill them that fast. I've accidentally filled a tank at 93° when it was supposed to be 80 and they didn't even care. I do 80% water changes weekly. The city messed up. And the amount of dechlorinator you used wasn't enough to handle it. If you could smell chlorine they messed up.

@SS Bisboy this happened to me also but nowhere near as severely as you. I did the water change and came back about twenty minutes later to check on the tank and one fish had passed and a couple others weren't doing well. I added another dose of dechlorinator and they recovered. Since then I started over dosing every water change to be safe. Don't beat yourself up about it or let it discourage you. It's just one of those things that's out of your control. Your tanks are very clean. Those are some lucky fish.
Damn man. Sorry for your lose.❤

If you can, install a whole house water filter canister and use the carbon filters. I actually have a 3 stage, 1 sediment and 2 carbon filters. They will help absorb any nasty chemicals if the city bombs the water with any chemicals. It costs about 200 per filter canister if you do the install yourself.
@SSBisboy
Жыл бұрын
I might have to look into that, thanks for the recommendation
Follow-up comment... it may be your water supply. Test your water if you smell chlorine. That's a clue. It may be that the water company added more chlorine due to something they saw in the water. I've been in the hobby 45 years, so chin bro up, it may not be something you did or your equipment. This is a great hobby, but sometimes it's very difficult to deal with. P.s. i do large water changes, too, so you're not alone.

City water and thats also what somebody local to me was possibly thinking
I do 75% every 2 weeks, I have reduced it to 50% as. My nitrates are good, I ensure the temp is close to same with python before sending water to the tank, I put the prime in before sending the water I do not add stability till after as the bacteria will be killed off by the tap water, there is too many different variables that could have caused this the only way to figure it out is you sometimes u can't

You have to speak with Seachem. Seachem states Seachem safe or prime must be left in the water a total of 4-5 minutes before you add sink or tap water. In addition to that I also add beneficial bacteria in a bottle too. I learned by my faults it’s best to put more cold water in the tank that hot water. If you using run the water to replace the water you had taken out of is 78 degrees. 73 is doable. Colder water actually sparks breeding. Do 50% water changes every two to three weeks. Another important piece of advice is. Use lava rock for your deco in your take. It never expires.
@ericag.4212
Жыл бұрын
Add two hob with filter floss and media in them. That way anything that has to be removed will be accessible instead of breaking sumps and filters down. Beneficial bacteria in the bottle can be Api or fritz. Too much safe or prime can kill fish. When u add safe or prime, keep a wave maker on to circulate the safe or the prime - that way the fish still get oxygen. Safe or prime measured incorrectly without circulation or oxygen can take their air away. Good luck! I learned these things on my own thru my faults. For the ones that survived use Api milafex and sea salts every other day to restore them. Qt them for two weeks.

Sorry to see, brother. Years ago, i did the same thing. In my case, it was water change due to temperature. I accidentally bumped my temp control, and it made the water way too cold. I watched 25 fish show specimens die one by one and couldn't do anything whatsoever. I was gutted. At that time, i had one tank. i now have 10 tanks. because it destroyed me so bad that i literally kept the tank empty for one year. When i finally got over it i started again now like i said i have 10 tanks and many aficans, so all i can say first you must figure it out before you move on on what went wrong. Good luck brother take care.
