As someone who did gymnastics for a long time, the foam pits we used were at least 6-7ft deep and used thousands of blocks to fill. The fact that anyone in charge thought this was acceptable for people to use is mind blowing.

One of the worst things I've heard from Twitchcon so far (besides this): Twitch staff wouldn't let a disabled person sit down in the line, despite the person insisting they were going to pass out. When they DID pass out, their service dog started doing DPT (deep pressure therapy) to help. Twitch staff then literally TOOK THE SERVICE DOG OFF OF THE PERSON, causing them to be passed out for over a minute. Mind you, the dog's vest clearly said on it DO NOT REMOVE FROM HANDLER. Absolute disaster all around. Edit to add: This happened to lounaticlive

I looked into depth requirements for a foam pit, and this is what I found: “To ensure trampoline park safety, the minimum depth required for trampoline park foam pits is 60 in. (152.4 cm.), and it is only permitted to dismount into a foam pit from normal trampolines, NOT allowed from high performance trampolines.” Considering that the foam only went up to their knees, and 60 inches is 5 feet that definitely isn’t up to standard. Of course, they weren’t jumping from a trampoline, but they were still jumping into the foam pit regardless and that shouldn’t change anything.

I gotta say, I was very presently surprised from the good vibes at Twitchcon. From the people who stopped by my work’s booth to the creators in artist alley, every person I met was incredibly nice. I would absolutely, 100% go to a con again. The only dark cloud (for me, I know other people experienced a number of issues) was the fact that the foam pit stayed open until Sunday afternoon when the injury occurred on Saturday. That was shocking.

This really is life changing for her. In high-school, I slipped on ice and landed on my back. My back still bothers me to this day. I can't believe the lack of foam in that pit. If they insisted on having that pit, they should've told people to only jump in feet first or something. Edit: I'm not recommending people jump in at all (even feet first). I don't think the pit should exist with 2% foam in it. I'm just saying, the workers let people jump in weird ways knowing there wasn't a lot of foam and that's weird!

I legit almost died in a foam pit one time in 7th grade. A friend i was there with playfully buried me underneath a bunch of them while i desperately tried to shovel them off. While this was happening and i was completely hidden from sight, a high school senior was jumping down the trampoline track and did a flip into the pit. This man had no idea where in the pit i was and a did a flawless fucking axe kick that resulted in his heel striking me right in the center of the forehead. I felt the crack of my skull through my entire body and it swelled to the size of an egg. I amazingly did not get a concussion and that senior actually broke his heel on my face when it happened. Shits crazy dangerous pretty much all the time Edit:i am in fact okay thank you for all the retroactive concern. When i went to the doctor a few days after that incident they told me if i hadnt been as heavy set at the time i likely would have died without the cushioning. A little fucked up to tell a 12 year old but hey go me for having zero food related impulse control during childhood right?

This hits home. Had a back injury from being hit by a drunk driver. I went from working out 7 days a week to not being able to walk for months. Years of dealing with pain and nerve damage took a long time to physically heal, and even longer mentally. Struggled 5 years with depression and anxiety having my life changed in a split second. These injuries truly never go away and become part of how you live every single day. I wish her recovery be miraculous and that the pain passes fast.

Tailbone injuries are no joke. When I was like 7, I was playing on a swing set when the chain broke and I fell directly onto my tailbone. It was only like a 2 foot fall and I was pretty light, but immediately afterwards something happened that I now know was my body going into motherfucking shock. I blacked out for a second and then faded in and out of consciousness, during which I stumbled back to my house. I made it about halfway there before I ‘woke up,’ collapsed, and began screaming in pain. Luckily I didn’t break anything, just bruised the bone, but it was still terrifying.

This is ordinary negligence; the level of injury is not factored as heavily as you might think. A good lawyer could argue that it's reckless disregard for safety, elevating it to gross, but otherwise this is a failure to exercise sufficient duty of care. Gross would be if they put bricks instead of foam, or they put the foams over a spike pit. They put foams down, they just didn't put enough. Unfortunately waivers cover ordinary negligence. She's going to need a really good lawyer, but I hope she wins because this sucks.

Pain shoots down your legs and you're completely locked up, your back is frozen. I kept squatting for years after which only aggravated it and just in the last few years finally gave up that movement to much improvement. But like many say the pain NEVER completely goes away, I just pinched a nerve or whatever I can't image two broken bones in that area.

Same here with chronic inflammatory condition/autoimmune disorders. Persistent, daily pain is absolutely life altering and doesn't get taken as seriously as it should be. I hope she's able to make a swift, full recovery with no life long after effects...

my mom had gotten a back injury about 2 years ago now that she still deals with. Surgeons are too afraid to do surgery because apparently her injury is super rare and a surgery has a 70-80% chance of leaving her paralyzed. So with surgery out of the picture all she can do is weekly therapy to make sure she can get somewhat better this way. She deals with so much pain and it is awful to see her like this. I hope this young woman will heal quickly and as much as possible even if it won't go away fully

I feel you. In the past 20 years, my 56 y/o mother has had a spinal fusion, a neck fusion, and another back surgery. I've honestly lost track of what she's all had done. Trust-- sticking with PT and other methods first is so much better than surgery and the subsequent pain meds. I hope PT helps your mom and that she gets some relief soon, it's so hard to see loved ones in that pain. Wishing yall the best.

Scary right? My mother has had multiole surgeries on her back. Multiple fusions. At one point the doctor diagnosed my mom as a partial quadriplegic. Meaning if she were take a bad fall she would be paralyzed from the neck down or not be alive basically. Luckily she had a surgery to prevent that...but now she need more surgery. Feels like an endless cycle.
