Just received my magnetiser. I’ve been demagnetising my fleet of Triang and older Hornby locos. Great bit of kit, easy to use. The amps are down and run a lot smoother on lower power. Highly recommended.

Hello Ronald Thank you for making these videos. I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my first Dublo loco, a decrepit Duchess of Atholl. I got it cheap on eBay, and I'm pretty sure I can get her going again. I have lots of experience with vintage Märklin H0 and also Hornby 0 gauge. I buy, repair and sell vintage trains, so Dublo is a new area I'm getting into. Having a magnetiser would likely be a good investment. I think you mentioned you sell them as kits? Hey Ron, what a good idea and so good to see all those venerable old ocos being well cared for! A while back I was persuaded to change to Super Neo magnets, certainly work but massively powerful and I feel cause cogging of the armature, locos run around 100-200mA. But i kept all my old magnets so I am tempted by your kit. How much is it?

Hi Mr Man, Yes a safe 12 volts DC and the time it takes to re-magnetise a motor is less than one second, therefore heating of the coils is not a consideration although they are all tested for much longer periods of time and incorporate a variety of heat resistant materials. Regards, Ron

OK, not scientific, but your screwdriver test on the block magnet chassis looks pretty close to the strength of the much maligned neo magnets. I daresay the Neos are indeed stronger though. Also, can you do the magnets out of the frame and re-assemble? It occurs to me that you could deliberately remag some of them opposite way for more interesting double-heading...

Hi Austin, to get the most out of your horse shoe and bock magnet motors the magnet needs to be re-magnetised in situ. The ringfield magnets on the other hand can be magnetised out of the motor though where possible I leave them in.

+Captain, Price Hi, it will re-magnetise alnico magnets as long as they are re-magnetisable like most vintage magnets as used in Dublo and Triang ect.. Some later magnets are permanently magnetised while hot during the manufacturing process, and made of a different material, these cannot be re-magnetised and don't normally loose their magnetism. +Ronald Dodd Thanks for the prompt reply. I have been reassembling the family layout since I retired, my elder brothers started the collection in the fifties. Have recently assembled the layout in the garage, the 0-6-2 tank , the 2 duchess's and one 2-6-2 running slow, brushes okay and armature whilst showing wear also okay. used the simple screwdriver test on the magnets and does seem weak. My Father worked for Meccano and was able to purchase a few boxes of 3 rail rolling stock and rails for 50p a box, this when the the company was going under and sadly if not bought by my Dad, would of ended in the metal crusher. No he did buy any of the line cleaning wagons with hindsight although at the time we did not know how rare they would become. Your videos and very informative. Regards Philip

Hi Ron, thanks for the magnetiser kit. I have already done a few little magnets and re done my screwdriver, but it came into it's own after I had rebuilt a seized and unhappy HD 8F from ebay. Hi Ronald, Just allow me to say I am a complete novice and invalid living in the smallest flat I have ever seen no room for living ‘essentials let alone Railway Models cars landscape etc, so I ask all firstly not to deluge me with "Thats obvious" Remarks, OK? To me nothing is obvious until one takes part and actually fixes or builds or runs some of this gear. I mentioned I am a novice so let that suffice and I can only ever wonder at how anyone decides what Models they are going to use on an as yet unpopulated or even unbuilt Set of Towns etc. The whole thing, and the amount of different builders both ‘British’ European and world-wide is phenomenal --- so where to start? And here I am talking in general terms, where does one really start to figure how much space is necessary at its minimum and then how much space cane be utilised over and on the Tracks and Stations to build whatever "Towns" and "Cities" Canals rivers and sundry stuff like farms and their content etc. Absolutely fascinates me and though I know I can never have a set-uo and fantastic, or even modest arrangement myself, my interest NOW is piqued by the many MANY online Lay-Outs and their very kind and patience builders and operators and not least the home to which this all takes place and is the place everything take precedents as long at it is TRAINS or MODELS, right? Please forgive me here Mr Ronald Dodd, to start with the very basics - How do you run the power to the entire Lay-Out and know it is going to be ‘at least enough’ to complete any project one one has in mind. I think most people apart from Model Aficionados’ would not know the power necessary to run a single Loco, and does that power automatically step up to feed the very small but by scale pretty long goods Trains with many tens of wagons,for example? Well I did say I was a novice and I guess that is one of those questions maybe oftentimes asked by ’Newbies’ such as me. I have in mind what kind of ~ Hardware would one use to power-down and transfer the necessary power to each of maybe dozens of lines, does the ‘Cabling’ need to get progressively smaller one the tracks are powered or is it the trains that are powered? There is a whole lot of very basic detail here, and the world will not stop spinning for any particular not dealt with, OK? I am here and enthralled by the minutiae of all the layouts. I was a builder so understand the basic electrical layout of a home, though "3~Phase" does literally ‘phase me! Take care to you Ronald, and my best wishes to all. mrbluenun
