Hornby Dublo 3250 SR Suburban Electric Train

Ойын-сауық

I look at a little running from my newly acquired Hornby Dublo 3250 SR Suburban Electric Train becoming available in the early 1960s. Plus a number of other items running.
The company I got the replacement side frames from several years ago doesn't seem to be in existence. However, if you search for the following on eBay you will find replacements. "Replacement sideframe for Hornby Dublo EMU motor coach - set of 4"

Hi Oscar ,superb I really like that model ,the class 501 used to work the north London line and Watford DC lines sharing in part the line with the bakerloo line and on the north London line the district line between Gunnersbury and Richmond now part of London overground ,when new they worked on a four rail system like the tube so your model looks good on the three rail very authentic mate ,wrenn was going to rerelease it before they closed down that would of been great I’m sure someone has the mouldings be good to have a run of this model ,shame triang didn’t take it on ,😊 All the best Mark 😊😊

Good evening Mark, thank you again for watching and the terrific information. I used to go to Gunnersbury Park quite a bit as a child, they used to rent rowing boats on the pond there. Also hotdogs and 99's from the café the Sun always seem to be shining, but didn't get to travel on the trains. Would've been a nice model if Wrenn had got around to it especially in maroon livery. All the best. Oscar

Nice Video. Green ends are quite rare and all green cab ends particularly rare although replica 3 D printed cab ends are available (the green cab ends lack the moulded line for positioning the yellow panel) I agree they are over engineered but that makes Dublo wonderful I think. Its interesting that although the model is numbered and sold as a Southern Region unit its actually based on a London Midland Euston to Watford electric unit not a southern one. You have a nice 3 rail box there as well. The driving trailer was only available in the red box (or if you find in blue it would be worth a mint!) Great model and video thanks .

Indeed, the green (non driving) end version is really rare, this is one of only a handful I've actually seen, all of mine have black ends - 2 and 3 Rail. One of my favourite models, they seem to run so quietly and smoothly.

The Dublo EMU-2 and 3 rail- sound smoother and quieter than the Triang one, much as I like the Triang one. The motor chassis on the Dublo one looks the same/similar to the class 20 type 1 Bo Bo diesel, which was also a smooth runner, and looks a very solid piece of engineering!

Gosh, those Hornby Suburbans run nicely? I think that I like their sound on the track much better than the Tri-ang EMU's power bogie knurled wheel whine? I have had so little experience with Hornby Dublo myself, and I never realized just how good that they are? I must admit that I had not given any thought to running the Hornby 2 rail on Tri-ang track? All of my life, I imagined that "never the twain shall meet" ? (Pardon the 'twain' pun) I couldn't resist thinking of a Tweety bird? I think that you need a signal of some sort, at the "stopping point" for the isolator on that top loop? I'm sure that if I were driving, I would forget to stop in the right place? This has been a great video, although following 3 very similar green Suburban trains, has left my old brain a bit confused? See you next week...

Good evening Rob, thanks for looking in. It does make a lovely sound. It's quite hypnotic just by itself in the room. A signal is in the planning for the return loop, just need to get around to it. The base wiring to make it work is all sitting underneath and ready to go, if I got it right! I just need to place some signals in on the top side and support them on the side walls.. I had some sort of 3-D printed clip/support in mind, but as yet need to sit down and get on with it. Oscar - great running of trains as usual..if space permits why not change your points areas by adding a half straight as this would then get rid of the snake effect and reduce the likelyhood of a derailment?

Thanks Oscar, I would like a Dublo EMU, but they are a bit of a price,, I nearly bid on a quite marked version, and though I'm not too bothered about condition on some items, the money these go for I would prefer a clean one! I did pickup a Triang EMU power bogie quite cheap which turned out to be a good one, just neglected rather than run into the ground, so I managed to restore a motor less power car I've had for some time, as you say these have a great sound when they run. My Triang Winston Churchill is rather nice it needed new names when I bought it but it's lovely, it had no box so I keep it in a wooden case that once contained a bottle of 1953 brandy, just the thing really!

Thanks for all you do and bringing them to us on a Sunday. Take care. Is it possible to lift the bodywork with a thin washer just to give that extra clearance. Xx

The 3-car set as shown in the catalogue was never actually produced. HD reduced it to a 2-car set to lower it's selling price as it was thought to be too expensive for a train set. I suppose it was hoped that more sales at a lower price would bring more revenue, rather than fewer sales at a higher price.

Think from memory green end early, black end late and correlates with the couplers. The weight in two rail was, I believe, due to similar issues which the bo-bo was displaying in 2 rail. That is, the electrical pickup solely through the two wheels wasn't the most reliable, the weight of course adding to the electrical continuity. Couldn't quite see clearly but your new tyres, are they the o-ring replacement variety? Originally of course they were flat in profile, and I was finding that using the popular and easy to get replacements nowadays that are actually o-rings can add to derailments due to losing a bit off the flange depth. Shiny examples: most, and including mine, seem to have had varnish issued causing rusting around the window cut outs...
