    I love Tuesday mornings. And I appreciate the effort that went into this one, George. I know if you get too technical you'll lose some folks, but the nerd in me has questions. Were those pumpkins at 50 yards? Did you notice any significant POI shift between the loadings? And finally, I saw your caliper on the bench. Did you happen to note the maximum expanded diameters of the bullets from those loadings? Cheers!

    @Hutehund Yes, and that "footage" just didn't make it into the final cut. But here's the data for us "nerds" to chew on. 250gr. XTP at 1350MV - .75" with a final weight of 220gr. 250gr. XTP at 1650MV - .65" with a final weight of 230gr. 240gr. XTP MAG at 1350MV - .75" with a final weight of 220gr. 240gr. XTP MAG at 1650MV - .72" with a final weight of 230gr. But this one was hard to measure because the lead "mushroom" was almost non-existent. It was the jacket (that was still intact and attached to the core) that accounted for that measurement. The one data point that just doesn't make sense is that the 250gr XTP at +P velocity had a smaller mushroom, and retained more mass than the same bullet at lower velocity. "Common" sense says it should have been larger and shed more mass.

    @@TargetSuite Thanks George. So, if I was forced to split hairs on a sampling of one round for each load, I'd have to give the nod to the lower velocity - 1350fps 240gr. XTP magnum bullet (2nd one shot - 3rd on your list above). It was definitely the most reactive in the pumpkin and the penetration was exceptional. But they all performed well. Nicely done, Sir.

    No disputing old cartridges still work as good and even better now when using modern jacketed bullets. There is something to be said about most every cartridge on your favorites list. The 45-70, 45 Long Colt, 44 Magnum, 357 magnum and 30-30 all still have cool little tool sets still made just for them. You can still buy a Classic Lee Loader for around $40-dollars and sometimes less. I still have one for 30-30 and 44-magnum. When I bought my first one it cost $10 dollars. I paid twice that much for the 44 set. It is kind of fun to use them even if you have conventional loading equipment. Traditionally most wilderness types would buy powder, primers, lead and a single or double bullet mold and make and their own ammo. They once made many more sets for all kinds of cartridges. They made sets for shotgun shells too. When I bought my first 30-30; I bought one with all the fixings. A pound of IMR 3031 cost $3 dollars, a hundred Sierra 170-grain bullets $3 dollars more. Primers were $.50 cents for a box of one hundred. A box factor shells cost $4 dollars. This taught me not to waste ammo. I still regret selling my 22-hornet and the Lee Loader. Making ammo old school is pretty cool. I bet you might like it. PS try making gallon jugs of JELL-O; less mess and similar results to watermelons.

    Haha! Btw, I read a great article about the Rossi '92s a few days ago. I don't know how old yours is but the gist of the article was about how in "recent years" they had lengthened the receiver a tad bit to accept longer cartridges particularly the 454 Casull. If you ever consider the 300gr XTP MAG bullets, that may come in handy. The first shooting sequence in this video was using those longer bullets and they did want to hang up if I didn't aggressively cycle that finger lever.

    I ran some 240gr XTP Mags in my 20in 1892 over the chronograph, 5 shots averaged 1890fps with a spread of around 30fps. Won't share the charge, but the overall length of these bullets is a bit longer due to a longer nose to crimp. Mine come in around 1.645 COAL so make sure your gun can feed that long. Had to do some invasive, unpleasant work to get mine to feed that extra 5 hundredths(worth it), but some guns do just fine out of the factory.

    I hand load my 460SW for a 24" barrel and I had to use the XTP Mag bullets because the standard ones would deform from the pressures. The 300GR XTP Mag from my 24" barrel loaded at the minimum charge was pushing 2300FPS. That puts a giant hurt on a deer.

The 1892 action will take it, proven by the Big Horn Armory design, but the reciever and internal parts were all significantly modified to accomodate the longer cartridge and I'm sure the heat treatment to strengthen the reciever and chamber are substantial too. Hi Mike. Great question. There was no change in primer shape even with the one maximum +P round that I loaded to test the high end of that genre'. Velocity of that bullet was almost 1900fps. Recoil and muzzle blast with that round was significant, as was case swelling near the base. But extraction was not difficult. I just wasn't comfortable with that power level in the 45Colt cases. Maybe I'm over-conservative, but I didn't want to lead by example and have a bunch of folks having accidents. So, even though the +P loads I settled on are well above the rated pressures of the cartridge they seemed reasonable and there was a lot of supporting evidence for using that power level in the 45Colt/modern carbine combo.

    I've had these XTPs shed jackets in previous videos, but those were all close shots at full velocity. That's why I'm shooting these pumpkins at 50 yards. As I said to @Chris Henson in a later comment, the jackets of the Mag bullets do seem to be thicker. But with all the distortion from impact, I can't really measure that.

    44 Remington Magnum isn't 44 caliber, it's .429" caliber in jacketed bullets. Hornady 250 & 300 grain XTP's are designed for the 45 Colt rifle or revolver. Also lower pressure reloads in 454 Casull and 460 S&W Magnum cartridges. Also 45 caliber sabots in 50 caliber muzzleloaders. Hornady 240 & 300 XTP Mag bullets are designed for the 454 Casull cartridge velocities. Also can be used in the 460 S&W Magnum and 45 caliber sabots in 50 caliber muzzleloaders. 45 Colt name. The 45 Colt is the official name used by the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute (SAAMI). The common misnomer name 45 long Colt is not required. It was never officially named 45 long Colt and it's use is incorrect. Yes, everyone's familiar with the 45 Colt cartridge back in the calvary days. The soldiers came up with the 45 long Colt designation, because of the shorter 45 S&W Scofield cartridge. I'm not stating this to change your mind, I'm just educating you on the only correct name 45 Colt.

    What was the velocity on the 250g xtp P+? I am loading them in my Henry 45colt. Accuracy is best around 1500-1600fps. But I’m worried how they are going to act when hitting bone. Can’t get my hands on either on the xtp mags. Got a box of 300g xtp that I know will be slower. Might hold together on a shoulder shot.

    XTPs seem to be all over the place in performance. I wish they would improve the bullet and get them to hold up better. I've seen a lot of different results using them in muzzleloaders, with the 240 grain .430 XTP. Sometimes they mushroom nice like the pictures, many times not. I've seen them kind of grenade into several fragments, and I've seen complete jacket separation, lead exits, jacket stays, sometimes its all there just separate. Sometimes the lead stays together and mushroom, and the jacket frags. Usually you have a dead deer, but wish bullet would hold up better. Too bad they dont do a 44 cal mag version. The speer deep curls are supposed to hold up better, I'm hearing, if you can even find them.

    en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminal_ballistics. My experience has been with next to Maximum velocity that a bullet or should I say projectile engages a target deeper with less expansion, that’s why it’s wise to pick the appropriate bullet when hunting for a particular type of animal and yet at the same time choosing the charge wisely . PS. It’s the same thing in taekwondo ,if you hit a target let’s say a piece of board with slow speed as opposed to full speed you’ll see that you do more damage to your hand at slower speeds “ Mushrooming “

  • @TargetSuite

    @TargetSuite

    3 жыл бұрын

    @Johannes van Hoek That "deeper with less expansion" statement would explain why the standard XTP at 1630mv had a smaller 'shroom and deeper penetration. And if you assume that loss of mass happens most significantly around the edges of the mushroom, that would explain the better mass retention of the faster bullet as well. This almost the opposite of what is known, and I have demonstrated, about cast bullets. That slower penetrates better and mushrooms less. But cast bullet terminal ballistics are different. Aren't they? Great comment! We'll probably be churning on this subject for a while.

    I tell you what señor, I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of any of those rounds. My biggest problems (besides being in a wheelchair for any distances) are the ranges that we deal with in NM and the lack of a good range to practice on. I’m in ranch country and we’re in a drought. Ranchers are really picky about who’s shooting within a country mile of their cows, especially now that people are facing hunger. Cows still get rustled out here. They’re shot, winched into a horse trailer and gone in mere minutes, to be processed elsewhere. So while it’s wide open desert, it’s easy to get shot AT by an angry rancher. All that to say this- I love the rifle/pistol caliber matches and want a pair of my own but they’re just too short range for my particular hunting situation. In country with significant foliage and shorter ranges they would appear to shine though. And a match in .357 magnum, 44 magnum or 45 Colt would certainly be useful as general ranch guns for the truck! Especially if you are reloading your own ammunition!

    Thanks Michael. I have a friend that is quick to point out that "all politics is local" and applying his "truth" to this discussion, we are a country with very distinct terrain, vegetation,, and game animals. So, you are spot on. These pistol caliber rifles work well in woodlands, but not in the prairies, deserts, and mountains of much of the rest of the country. Great comment by the way!

    It was nicknamed the "45 Long Colt" in the 1800's by military personal because the shorter 45 Schofield was also in service at that time. Regiments would sometimes receive the wrong cartridge for the revolvers they were using, so this was a way to further specify. Although the 45 Schofield round would work in both service revolvers, the 45 Colt would only chamber in the Colt firearms.
