Cover the hot hands up with a box with a 1/2” x 1/2” hole cut in it. The heat signature will only be 1/2” and not bloom out because of the air space to the front of the box where your hole is.

I did similar -- got a 6.5cm for coyotes for when it is really cold and windy in MN winter and the shots are going to be longer for snow depth keeping me further out. I sighted in with 127 grain ammo, but then got the Federal 95 grain VMax loads rates 3200 ft/sec. I like using the lighter side of 6.5CM ammo in order to get to effective hunting velocities. Also, to save a few $ b/c the VMax are like $2/round, this year I got on-sale some Federal 120 grain OTM for those 🐺s at half the VMax price. Alas, it has been warm and max 3" of snow around me in MN so I haven't tried these out yet. Last year was -20F and 3 feet of snow and I could barely get 50 or 75 yards off the county road to perform a set. Last weekend, I walked miles and literally followed 🐺 tracks and did setups all over with the much lighter 223/556 rifle.

That's good juju right there. I bought a case of the 6.5G to test with a 24" heavy barrel AR and a 26.5" CZ Varmint 527. Just started with the 6.5CM this year. So far only a 20" AR. Trying to decide on a bolt action. Interested to see how it compares with Defender Ammunition 105gr TGK loads in G & CM. Nice to find your channel. Excellent presentation

Thank you! I’m really hoping that was due to shooting a completely different round just before going to the ELDVT and that it won’t do that with every cold bore shot. But that cold bore shot was still only an extreme spread of 1.25” when added to the other 4 shots touching eachother.

So regarding your comments about getting a precise aiming point with thermal. Get yourself some foil tape, and tip the target back a bit so that the foil reflects the cold sky. With good optics and conditions you can use pieces as small as 1/4". I keep rolls of 1/4", 1/2", and 1 1/2" in my truck. No thermal bloom, and you can use the different thicknesses depending on conditions. Works best on a clear sky. As an experiment you can use pieces of aluminum foil from the kitchen, but don't let it wrinkle.

That's how to do it. Also you can put one of the hand warmers inside a box, stuck to the rear inside wall - then cut a 1/2 inch hole in the front wall of the box - set it out with that hole facing you and you have a very good small aiming point without the heat bloom.

A lefty shooting a right hand rifle, blasphemy ! For more precise groups, I cut the heat pads in half or even smaller to minimize the heat signature and blooming when sighting in. It would've been nice to see if the Rix scope was the cause of your misses/wounding, as you didn't have any issues dropping dogs last year with the 6.5 Grendel before the scope change. The iRay bolt 50 V2 is a stellar scope.

That really isn't a cold bore shot. It's a fouling shot for that ammunition. I've learned over the years doing load development for some very accurate custom rifles that switching bullets and powder requires at least one shot to settle in, unless you clean the barrel, which we all know requires at least a couple fouling shots to get consistent results.
