Hornady A-TIP Bullet Test - Will They Work For Hunting?

Спорт

Will the new Hornady A-TIP bullets work for hunting? Will they expand on big game? We put it to the test on a big New Mexico Antelope!
It's a question that's been on our mind since Hornady announced the new long range match bullet line back in April, 2019. The Gunwerks team is always on the lookout for the best new innovations in long range hunting and shooting gear. The concept and design of this new bullet is intriguing. Since getting our hands on a few to test, they've done very well on paper and steel at close and long range.
After doing some of our own preliminary testing and talking to a few people "in the know", we decided to put them to the test on an antelope at our annual Long Range University and Antelope Hunt in Raton, New Mexico. Watch to see the results!
Game: Pronghorn
Location: Raton, New Mexico
Range: 690 yards
Rifle: Gunwerks ClymR 6.5 PRC
Bullet: 135 grain Hornady A-TIP bullet @ 3,033 fps muzzle velocity
Dial-Up: 3.4 MRAD
Wind: Right 5mph = .3 MRAD hold
Impact Velocity: 2,300 feet per second
Result: Behind shoulder shot, exit out opposite shoulder with golfball sized exit wound. Animal ran 30 yards and expired.

i took my 50BMG out a few weeks ago and shot hogs lined up at a trail of corn. using Hornady 750 grain A-Max load it went through 9 hogs with only the jacket recovered from the 9th. the core completely disintegrated by the 7th and 8th hogs. that bullet is just a bigger version of the A-Tip.

Things scaled up or down don’t always act the same. Sectional density, and the bond of metal on a molecular level changes relative to the outside forces acting upon it.

Would be interesting to get some more field data of these in use at closer ranges. Shot a Fallow deer with a 135gn 6.5mm a-tip out of a 6.5 swede at 220M. Certainly devastating, but not enough bullet left to penetrate deeply. Lots of lead and jacket pieces littering a fist sized wound channel. Was a chest shot almost front on, so a lack of penetration turned out to be a really good thing.

This is by far the best way to test a bullet!!! Any other test, such as ballistic gel, is only a minimal comparison, compared to the actual results that you guys just analyzed. I tell y’all, the more I read comments on here, the more I’m seeing that there are a lot of hunters who are just ignorant about ballistics and hunting or they are jealous of successful hunters that are capable of exacting a great shot past a hundred yards or so , it amazes me!! Please Gunwerks, keep up the great testing that y’all do. U guys always put out informative videos.

If there is an option to first test a product without risking a less than ideal outcome (especially when harvesting game), that is preferable to wounding an animal and losing your quarry. Edit: case in point, the FBI uses gel and barrier tests to verify effectiveness of handgun ammunition, it's better to see if something works in a controlled environment first, as opposed to playing a guessing game when the "rubber meets the road" or bullet meets the target.

  • @wvlongshooter3912

Rhubarb Pie Here’s how I see it. Comparing ballistic gel to game is not a good comparison. No hair, skin or bones in ballistic gel. No substance like blood in ballistic gel, hence, a mammal is 90 percent water. The fbi can’t legally try out bullets on people, that could end up in murder. Now, we talk about ethical hunting. No matter ones method of taking game, it’s alive and in one manner or another we kill it. It may die quick or the animal may die slowly. At the end of the day it’s just a animal. I’m not going to sugar coat it, I don’t give a dam how it dies, period!!!!!

Ballistic test is not enough. Here in Africa the anatomy is different. From many angels you have to go thru thick shoulder bone and the Sierra Game king, Berger hunting bullets just don’t make it. Where the Barnes, Hornady GMX and Nosler accubond and partition does it every time. The Nosler Ballistic tip is ok on smaller dear and easy to load. The pro hunters here says they had bad experiences with ELD -x with Eland an Gemsbok but on smaller game it is nice and very accurate. Barnes triple shock if it works for ur rifle is the best. I don’t know if you have Woodleigh’s and Swift A frame available in US? That is also very acceptable.

Had to have been 40 yard field of view in the film and that buck was still running pretty fast when he left the screen. I bet he went 80 yards or more. I have NEVER had a deer or antelope move one single step when I hit them with the same high shoulder shot using a Berger 140gr Hunting VLD. Always DRT with Berger shoulder shot. That tells me that the A-Tip did not expand until it hit the opposite shoulder blade on exit. Notice they left out all the internal damage footage. Definitely paid by Hornady to give a completely biased review.

With so many hunting bullets specifically designed to maximize tissue destruction and harvest deer and elk in a quick ethical manner, then why not just stick with those? There have to be close to 100 different models to choose from. The A-tips are thin-jacketed projectiles worthy only of hunting paper and aren't optimized for any type of large-game hunting. I hope that people that are watching and are new to hunting consider my advice. Thanks.

Except most thin jacketed bullets like these will destroy more tissue than "hunting bullets", resulting in quicker kills. First animal kill available. Pronghorn make a good test in some ways because it's one of the most controlled environments available with risk of a wounded animal getting away (in the remote chance the bullet doesn't expand) just about as minimal as you can get on a free range hunt. No big patches of timber for an animal to run into and die.

If so much science and research Goes into making these bullets what does Hornady Think of using their science of a match bullet being used for hunting.
