    Glad it helped, and keep in mind my repeated mention of the fact that a programmable radio WILL make the experience better. So, if you have one, please set that up and enjoy. The stock DXs does the job, but it could fly a lot easier with a programmable radio...seems a bit counter-intuitive, but it's true!

    Thank you again for the thorough explanations. I installed my flaps yesterday. The radio setup on thee NX8 was a bit different from what you showed, but your guidance helped immensely in deciphering the Spektrum manual. There was no mystery at all in coordinating the flap and elevator deployment speed. The Flap System control page is awesome. After getting the servo and switch assigned correctly everything else can be done from that page. The position of the servo/switch is controlled by a value, -100 to 100, for both ends and the center position. What I found is that I could “reverse” the servo just by swapping the sign in the endpoints. The elevator position was similarly easy to set and so after experimenting and finding that positive values deflected pitch down, I set those to a conservative 10% (half flaps) and 20%. When the winds calm I’ll test and adjust those for perfect balance. I watched you theorize a way to get elevator deployment to synchronize (time delay) with the flaps. I know you have an NX8 now so switch to that and there is nothing extra needed. When you set the elevator deflection in the Flap System page the timing is handled for you. My flaps and elevator deploy at the same speed. Perfect! Why 4 seconds? I timed the flap deployment on my Cirrus and found it is about 2 seconds to go from none to half, and another 2 to go from half to full. When I had a 185 I always deployed the flaps with some finesse (hand operated flap lever). Flap deployment and retraction initiate significant pitch diversions. Rapid flap deployment near the runway would likely result in some dangerous excursions. Rapid flap retraction at low speeds can cause an immediate stall, with no warning buffet. Below 1,000 feet (real airplane) that is deadly. So the long and short of it is I want the little model to behave well, like a real airplane. Are you also a pilot or student pilot?

  • @BrianPhillipsRC

    @BrianPhillipsRC

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the feedback, and so glad you're getting the hang of it! The programmable setup on this model left something to be desired, but since I've been running the NX8, many of these issues have been resolved. Also, I think that I had been running about 4-5 year old firmware on my DX18, until very recently, so that might have played a part in my trouble. Either way, very glad you're getting it figured out!!! Agreed about flap deployment - slow is best for sure ;) As for flying full scale, or being a student pilot...not yet, but I want to get flying soon. I own a plane, but can't fly it ;( Teenie Two. We have a very short video about it, if you're curious. I want to fly ultralights, but I've more or less committed to making everything else in our lives "in order" if I start such a potentially dangerous hobby....4 kids and wife depending on me...so might not happen as soon as I want it too... Have a Happy Easter, if we don't speak another 3-4 times before them ;)

    Brian thanks for showing this plane off, I bought this plane after I bought the T-28 because I was too worried to fly the T-28 and wreck it. This plane is a breeze to fly, but the wing creates so much lift it becomes difficult to land it in safe when there is wind, you don’t have enough down elevator to overcome the lift. It’s so confidence inspiring that I’ve actually been practicing flying without safe more and more. I figure a couple dozen more flights with this plane and I’ll celebrate with the maiden flight of the T-28. Thanks again for bringing all the excellent content and making it so exciting to watch. You and the camera crew Keep up the great work!

  • @BrianPhillipsRC

    @BrianPhillipsRC

    2 жыл бұрын

    Very glad you're enjoying the content, and thanks Matt! Great choices of planes, btw ;) As for your elevator concern, yes! Just don't let SAFE get you into a stall - IT CAN HAPPEN, but hopefully you'll be quick with the throttle since you're landing. One tip, you may have heard or seen before, but when landing make sure you get lined up (obviously) then just get settled into an approach. When you're satisfied, use throttle to either increase or decrease your rate of decent. It's a lot easier if you can narrow down the control inputs to just ONE basic control. Obviously, as you advance through the ranks as an RC pilot, you'll want to do all sorts of other cool and fun stuff, like cross controlling the plane on the way down, so you can slow WAY down in a huge hurry, and still stay lined up with the runway - just like the real ones! BUT for the moment, try to really MASTER that throttle thing...it'll make you a way better pilot, and it's how I learned to land, and helped a ton. Good luck! Keep flying Matt! Practice makes proficiency, and you can do it! Never end the day on a crash...yes, fly and land an easy plane. It's such a mental game...like golf...or something similar, you gotta learn, of course, but there's such a huge mental block for many new pilots, and when you break through, it's like a whole other experience - you won't believe me until it happens, and all of a sudden, it's "EASY" to fly. You'll forget about what you're doing and it just happens...so surreal the first few times you realize it's happening!

    I can’t wait for that ahah moment when it all totally clicks for me. I have a spare 637 receiver that I may swap out in this plane so that I can set the flaps appropriately and change out the bank angles in safe but I also don’t want to rely on safe to fly, for now it’s a great tool though. I read in the manual that this flight control is altitude based which is pretty cool, I was just surprised how easy this plane is to fly even without safe. The area I have to fly in is unfortunately always windy which isn’t ideal for learning but should make me better in the end. I very rarely interact with KZread personalities but I love your content and you actually respond. Again keep up the great work, I’ll keep watching and buying through your links to help you out. I’d love to see you fly the F35 edf that Horizon offers, that plane looks amazing.

    Thanks - This plane is NOT super easy to setup, which kinda drives me nuts...it's a BEGINNER PLANE!!!!! BUT, we do like it, and there's reasons for the non-sense with the channel count, but I still think it would have behooved Horizon Hobby to make this fly on an AR630, and KISS (keep it simple stupid) since the average NEW pilot isn't gonna know how to do this stuff without a literal step-by-step like we've TRIED to put together ;) Funny thing is, the PNP version of this plane, if it were available would be 10X easier to setup from scratch, with SAFE SELECT, rather than FULL SAFE...and the GPS - give me a break...WAAAAAAY to complicated. Anyway, glad you're here with us, and glad we could play a small part in helping you through the process. P.S. Watch one of the more "Advanced" planes and it might make you chuckle how much easier some of them end up really being!

    @@BrianPhillipsRC This Carbon Cub 2S is my first RC Airplane. I've flown drones for photography/videography for a long time, so that helped... all the same, learning RC Airplane Piloting from scratch is a fun challenge! Agree with all you've said about this plane, to the degree that I can as a beginner. EXCEPT: You kind of poo-poo'ed the Landing Assist module, and I have to tell you that thing's super! It really works well, is incredibly simple to install, and its never fallen out. Your controls override it or by just switching into Expert mode that sensor gets disabled and its all you. But its a great learning tool if you're out there by yourself connecting the dots! OH: I struggled with the GPS module and yanked it out in frustration... THEN I saw your Setup/Fly video and felt SO vindicated!!! Anyway... a month into RC airplane ownership and I'm hooked. If weather ever clears I'll find out if it still flies after my flap install! Kudos to the Camera Crew too! (PS: Ordered a fancier transmitter. If this snow doesn't quit, I'm gonna go broke.)

    Thanks for checking the remote. I asked Horizon why exactly it wouldn't and this was the response: " Technically switch D could be used, but it is not recommended. Flaps requires a mixing function (FLP=ELE) to control the attitude when flaps are deployed. The DXS transmitter does not currently have a mixing function. Otherwise, channel 7 is available for auxiliary functions." I do find it interesting that they say the transmitter ‘currently’ does not have the mix feature making me think down the road we might be able to update it to do so.

They money is a real factor for most (me included) but these things change all the time, so if you get a quality transmitter, they'll be good for years. I can still use some of my oldest ones to fly my newer planes...my point is, don't get too caught up trying to make the "future-proof" decision, since that doesn't exist today ;)

    I've done the same upgrade on My Carbon Cub S. An easy solution is upon start up when the Plane is zeroing itself and looking for Bind, have the tail elevated about 3". It fools SAFE mode into thinking its on flat ground and when it is pitched forward about 10 degrees. Now the extra lift wont balloon you by pitching back, it'll keep itself level.

    I have one of these. Purchased the float kit too. After some experience with the stock plane I’ll add flaps and the floats. With floats the flaps will be very helpful as it will shorten takeoff and landing considerably, as it does in my 185 aircraft. Although I have no experience with flaps on this model, I can offer some insight from lots of experience with full sized aircraft. Take off: Almost never take off with full flaps. Full flaps are a drag machine intended to kill forward momentum. I never use full flaps on takeoff from grass or pavement. Half flaps are also sometimes labeled takeoff flaps for that reason. On water, with floats, full flaps are used because the extra lift helps lighten the aircraft and break surface tension. Once flying and at an altitude of 10 feet or so flaps are slowly reduced so that the aircraft can speed up in ground effect before attempting to climb. So why not climb on full flaps? Because the drag of full flaps the plane will slow down dramatically if the engine quits, and it will not glide engine out except at a very high rate of sink. So one of two things will happen after a low altitude engine failure. The pilot will either fail to react with lightning quick reflexes and the plane will enter a low level stall / spin, and that is deadly. Nobody ever survives a stall/spin. OR, the pilot will react and get the nose down but the rate of sink will be so high that the landing on water will be destructive. The plane will flip over with you inside and probably unconscious. That is why full flaps are not deployed except during landing (and operations) when the landing is assured and with sufficient airspeed. And as mentioned during water takeoff. What has this got to do with model aircraft? It provides some perspective of exactly what flaps do and when and why they are deployed. My plan is to get the plane at altitude and do lots of experimentation with flaps before attempting to take off or land. I’m expecting the flaps to accelerate the stall and make recovery more difficult. I also expect to need more up elevator to counter the effect of the drag; and more power too! Thanks for the long and detailed explanation. Sure beats the job Horizon did.

    Brian, I installed the flap servo and connected it to ch8 in the flight controller, the flaps work in all flight modes using the DXs transmitter that came with my RTF kit, also the plane flies more like it should when the flaps are set to the factory settings, it won't "Balloon" out of control like yours does, instead they don't slow the plane down near as much and add more lift so you can back off the throttle to slow the plane for a more controlled landing. Your prop balancing method leaves some margin for error, you should use a balance tool and do it correctly.

    This plane is a great choice, but the Sport Cub S2 UMX is ALSO a great choice. Really the factor you need to consider is HOW MUCH ROOM do you have to work with. Also, the Sport Cub S2 UMX needs pretty much dead calm (no wind) to fly, whereas this Carbon Cub S2 will handle quite a bit of wind ;) Both good choices. Smaller is not necessarily harder, but that's a generally good rule of thumb. FYI...not sure if I sent you this list, but here's my "Beginner Planes" - Short List... I know this is the same air frame as the old 1.3m Sport Cub, but from all the videos I have watched, the Sport Cub seems to be a better flying plane. I love my Sport Cub. It was the first plane I bought after learning to fly on the little UMX Sport Cub. I finally got a CZ Cub. It fly's like a big ass version of the old 1.3m Sport Cub. Have you thought about swapping the 18A ESC and putting in a 30A and then using the 9.5x7.5 prop and adapter, from the old PZ T-28? It really wakes the plane up. Pair it with a 2200mah 3s pack and you can still get 8 minutes of non scale, silly Cub flying. Good Times!

    I'm still not ready to say the old one flies better, only since I'm flying from the DXs....but the old one I flew, and the Carbon Cub S+GPS (V1) flew REALLY good...but both were flown on Programmable Transmitters ;) I think when I pair this up with my DX18...it'll be a new plane ;)

    Brian what did you mean when you said you would "strip" the landing gear when coming down before the flaps were installed? I find this plane is super bouncey so far without flaps, it rarely tracks straight down the runway and wants to get squirly

    HI Brian thank you for your videos really helpfull,I m a newbie in the hobby flying a UMX turbo timber and love it, I m looking to get the Carbon cub s 2 without the gps module (I like to get lost), I have a Spektrum dx6e (6 ch) can I add the flap channel on the radio or I would need a 7 ch radio?

  • @BrianPhillipsRC

    @BrianPhillipsRC

    I THINK you might need the 7th channel, since HH setup this plane to use that HIGHER channel for control of the flaps. If you watch my LATER video of setting up the Programmable Transmitter (DX18) you might see the answer to your question too. This is a pretty regrettable decision, in my opinion, but this plane does pretty good without flaps, for what it's worth ;)

    Hey, Brian, awesome video and very thorough as usual. I just maidened this today after shakedown flight. She was flying and landing a bit hot, so I moved the battery 7/16" back from front of compartment. Now she really flys slow and super smooth IMO. *Question: Do you think if I set up full flaps at 1/2 of normal, and landing flaps at 1/2 of normal, this might smooth the flaps flying with DXS and no down elevator compensation?

  • @BrianPhillipsRC

    I ordered my second Carbon cub from your site. I had my first one fly too high on beginner mode and lost orientation. Super bummed. I'm planning on doing flaps this time. Will that help keep it from climbing to high? I'm planning to practice using down elevator on this one also. Thanks for the tips. Really helpful to beginners like me.

    Flaps don't make you stay high or low, they allow you to fly a bit slower without stalling. You gotta fly it ;)

    I know with my Carbon Cub S+ with full landing flaps and I forgot I had it on beginner mode and almost drove it straight into the ground! I was able to switch it back to advanced mode last minute and recover it. I actually just keep it on take off flaps and find I can control it much better. Maybe it's me, but I feel there is more of a learning curb with flaps and this plane. I still love the plane, but it's definitely tricky with the landing flaps for me.

    @@Daniel_SWE I got a DX8 gen 2. I have to say I didn't have any problems getting it to bind to the plane. It was getting use to the new radaio that took me a little time, since I initially flew my cub with the DXe that came with it. I had been out of the hobby for 25 years and am trying to learn all this new technology. I was used to flying balsa glow fuel with an FM transmitter that wasn't programmable. I assume you tried binding it both ways using the bind plug and pressing the bind button on transmitter and/or going through the menu on the transmitter and selecting bind that way?

    Hi Brian. Thank you for this video. I have ordered my Carbon Cup together with the flaps extension. Just a curious question.....have you ever flown this (together with flaps) with the floats? If yes, how is the "feeling"? Is this still ok?

  • @BrianPhillipsRC

    @BrianPhillipsRC

    I haven't flow THIS one with floats, but they include a more aggressive pitched prop for that application, and this I think 9" pitch (compared to 8" pitch, again, I think...) is going to help with power. I hear it's good on floats, but I just haven't done it myself.
