Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 Movie Review

Ойын-сауық

Kevin Costner’s Horizon might be the most ambitious movie undertaking since Lord of the Rings. Think about it - Kevin Costner has sunk a huge chunk of his own personal fortune into making an epic Western saga, with a second movie only weeks away from hitting theatres, regardless of whether or not the first makes him any money. If that weren’t enough, he’s already started shooting pieces of the third film, and he’s sworn he’ll also be making a fourth film as well. Given the scope of his ambitions, it’s hard to truly judge Horizon - Chapter 1 as a standalone film, with it so clearly part of a much bigger whole.

After three hours, both of us said we couldn't wait for part two. So nice to feel engaged by characters and treated like an adult with a decent attention span 👍

So you only read one book and listen to one song? By the way, that says a lot about Taylor Sharidan, who let'sKevin get the blame while Taylor his own work was late on all five of his projects. Too much on his plate. Finally his time to make $ we understand. But too bad for us. He's a great writer, not a great planner, or even fair to Costner. In the meantime you can watch Horizon a completely different and great movie. Enjoy it!

Sheridan stole 1883 idea from Costner. Cause Costner let Sheridan read Horizon script before he came up with 1883.

Thank you for giving an honest and fair review of this movie because the majority of the other ones that I have listened to they seem to be so confused by the process or what's going on with the first movie. I can't wait to see it

Good experience seeing it in the theatre. It's a set up for the sequels. Long drawn out spectacle. Give it a watch.

Great review. I appreciate the way you dispelled some of the false narratives beimg spun about this movie, and I thknk you dod a very good and fair job assessing its strengths and weaknesses. Its run time is going to be the biggest barrier to entry for most people, but fir a 3 hour long movie, I think it had pretty good pacing. It didn't feel as long as it was. My only issue is that i was forgetting a lot of the names. Maybe this is just me, but this might have fared better if they took each plot thread and told them each all at once consecutovely. It definitely feels like Dune in the way that it's clearly doing a lot of setup and doesn't havd a clean ending, but for what ut was, I had a good time and fully intend to see part 2. I hear it isn't performing the best, so I hope it gets enough positive word of mouth. I just want to see all four parts come out. It would be a shame if this epic didn't fully get to see the light of day. I respect its ambition, and I really think anyone who's even remotely interested should check it out, even if it's just to reward creative passion projects and original storytelling, which audiences really ought to support more (when its good, if course). I don't like number scores, but I'd agree with giving it a solid 7-7.5, which will probably go up in hindsight as the rest of the story ties things together.

We saw it ... and loved it. Critics be damned. Three stories set in three different locations Montana, Wyoming and Kansas. This is not a Marvel franchise, where all the work is being done by the film=makers ... especially for those with short attention spans. "Horizon" expects the viewer to "pay attention" and follow the story threads. We did. The acting is uniformly outstanding. Yes there are bad guys, but "Horizon"is nuanced, with characters, ... native Americans, settlers, Chinese immigrants, and soldiers ... that we come to know and to care about. The criticism that this is a television series put to film ... misses the point that if feature films are produced and streamed for television, than why not place a series in theaters? The point is ... "Horizon" looks, feels and sounds exactly like a feature film ... one we are eager to see more installments. It isn't called an "epic saga" for nothing. The first hour of the film is so riveting, you get caught up, swept away and excited to follow the ensuing story lines. Kevin Costner took a big risk with this film ... at a time when risk-taking in film-making is all but extinct. Risk-taking pays off for the viewer, because we are inundated with franchise mediocrity and super hero nonsense. "Horizon" doesn't give us super heroes ... it gives us an array of human beings occupying three story threads in a rich narrative of complicated American history. Special kudos to the cinematography and outstanding film score. Go see it. Prove the critics wrong and Kevin Costner correct ... not just for the risks he's taken ... but for the satisfying epic saga he has given us.

Great movie, really beautiful and your heart tears, I love the epic filmography, great acting, Kevin is a storyteller par excellence. For young people it is also the new or revaluation of the love for the language. Finally a different way of filming of what happend a thousand times, in an honest way. Beautiful cinematic manners since... ? After Horizon four, we will watch Horizon the American Saga for a weekend at least once a year!
