I heard him do this with Zinman when I was at Eastman. When he was done, the crowd did not cheer...it roared! We did not rise to our feet, we leapt to our feet! This would have been about the same time as this video. Also, I love the way Previn brings the orchestra to a hush just before the opening theme.

I saw him perform this with the Seattle Symphony back in the mid-90’s. It was an unforgettable performance.

Thank you so much for posting this video and the remarks and conversation that follow. This is my favorite piece of music and Gutierrez I believe plays this incredibly. Great performance by the orchestra as well.

Horacio has achieved the honorable! A wonderful concert. I am acquainted with his two sisters with whom I was a team mate in high school on the swim team.

I met his Mom and Dad. Dad and I would sit and have coffee while Mom would get her teeth cleaned. One day I had Emanuel Axe playing Mom asked who that was? I told her a friend and I would debate who played Beethoven 5th piano concerto. My friend preferred Alicia and I Emanuel. She asked if I knew Horacio? Unfortunately No😮. She went on to tell me several stories about him. I do miss coffee with his Father 😢

He plays like Horowitz. And I love Horowitz, so I love this

They studied with the same teacher---Sergei Tarnowsky. He had both Horowitz and Guttierez from the time they were children until they were young adults. During their formative years.

Exactly what I thought when I first heard Gutierrez play Rachmaninov 3 in Copenhagen 1978 , the year Horowitz took it in to his repertoire again after 25 years. One of my friends said to me “It’s even greater than Horowitz “ while another friend said “It’s nearly as great as Ashkenazy “ . Thank you so much for this upload.

In terms of tonal quality, he comes closest to Horowitz, and perhaps this is no coincidence, due simply to the fact they shared a teacher.

More colorful beautiful piano sound than Horowitz or Gutierrez=Emil Gilels Wilhelm Kempff Radu Lupu Artur Rubinstein Vladimir Ashkenazy Grigory Sokolov! Dimitri Bashkirov her teacher Anastasia Virsaladze teach saying to Bashkirov the most important lesson is the love of beautiful colorful piano sound! This was already in 1930s! Really Shocking!!
