Pretty certain since these people as others had written records. And what is wrong with this person to travel in a fanciful way via these animation threads to a past in a poetic and spiritual sort of way. Perhaps you suffer from a limited imagination. Dont ruin it for others by being the Minotaur in a china shop of fanciful memories.

Hi, thanks for your interest in Hoplites! Greeks at War. We can tell from the gymnasium setting of most of the vase decoration that this is intended to be a depiction of contemporary life - which makes it a scene of sixth-century BCE life. The similarity of the fighters suggests that they are all intended to be regarded as Greeks. The decorator may not have intended to be specific about which Greeks they are, but if you prefer to narrow it down, it makes sense to factor in where the vase comes from. The vase was made on the Greek island of Euboea, an island which was wracked by fighting between its two biggest cities, Eretria and Chalkis. So if you prefer to consider this scene as one of specific Greeks, it is most likely Eretrians vs Chalkians. If you'd like to see more about ancient Greek warfare and about this vase in particular, take a look at the animation's webpage: www.panoply.org.uk/everysoldier.html

I've performed several lectures on ancient Greek hoplite warfare which can be seen on my own KZread channel and I think this is amazing and brilliant! I would love to see this style expand into other Greek historical or mythological events like portraying Thermopylae, the Battle of Champions, the war of fetters, parts of Plataea, the Iliad, or just about anything you could think of! What an imaginative and immersive method of illustrating everything I try to get across to my audiences.

(EDIT. I take back what I said in this comment, I misunderstood the video) I love you videos. But this one, not that much. Not only did you invent something never depicted on any black figure vase (or red figure for that matter), which is a phalanx style of warfare (of highly questionable historicity, but certainly an anachronism) and pushing tactic on top of that (that one being a completely modern invention) but you also added a 300 reference which has no place in any culture related video. Not a fan. This is not how these Greeks fought wars.

Vojkan Selakovic Thanks for taking the time to comment. We put a lot of thought into how ancient warfare should be depicted in this animation. Massed formation fighting is depicted on a few Greek vases. The famous Chigi vase, made in about 640BCE - a hundred years before the vase in this animation, shows massed formations, as does the MacMillan vase by the same painter. We adopted some of their motifs for the animation. I would agree that close formation phalanxes were a later phenomenon, but loose massed formations certainly were used in the sixth century, that’s why we’ve depicted quite a loose massed formation here. We also avoided including a shield wall and an initial shield wall crunch, as that doesn’t fit our idea of how things would have worked. The scene of marching feet probably suggests more unison than is strictly appropriate to archaic warfare; we took some artistic licence there and included it to convey a sense of weight and dread. I’m not sure what you mean by the 300 reference, but would be interested to know. If you’d like more information about ancient warfare and the creation of the animation, visit the animation webpage at www.panoply.org.uk/everysoldier.html. From September 2015 you will be able to read a more detailed account in our chapter, ‘Animating Ancient Warfare: The Spectacle of War in the Panoply Vase Animations’, published by Bloomsbury Academic in War as Spectacle: Ancient and Modern Perspectives on the Display of Armed Combat.

Steve Simons Thank you for taking time to answer and patience to explain. In that case, it is I who didn't interpret well what was being depicted, and since we obviously agree on that development of Greek warfare, I apologize for my quick reaction. PS. shield bashing seemed painfully familiar from 300 movie. But anyhow, keep up the good work.
