Hoosac Tunnel Florida Massachusetts Deterioration Continues
I do not encourage anyone to enter culverts, unclog anything, or enter flooded areas as it can easily become deadly without the proper training
I unclog drains for fun in my spare time (I have been trained in culvert inspections for years with private co.) and I am osha trained.
Exploring anything abandoned can be dangerous or deadly without experience. I don't encourage anyone to enter any abandoned structures. Not only is safety a concern, but often times its illegal, and when possible I seek out permission from the owner or local police. I simply go to document its history before it's gone forever and I leave things the way I find them. I only take pictures and only leave footprints. I assume all the risks and responsibility before doing this. Please don't attempt to do this on your own. There could be nails, asbestos, falling concrete, soft floors, animals, or other hazards. Thanks for watching.

We had flooding a couple months back (probably around the time of this video) we still have peoples driveways washed out. Many condemned places.
Your theory about them purposely waiting for emergency funding is pretty solid, unfortunately. We just had a BNSF derailment at one of their bridges where I live, and engineers had been sounding the alarm for well over a decade!

Interesting how railroad maintenance started to go bad when RR names went from proud heralds to various alphabetic names representing various wall street private equity combines.
I remember going there in the BSA as a kid. I can only imagine how damaged it is now after these past storms on 7/19/23 & 7/20/23. I work as a chemical operator in WMass and know some of are chemicals pass through this tunnel, scary stuff.
I went there when I was a kid it has not changed much. I thought it was in north adams. Thanks for posting this it brought back memories
The problem is these train companies won’t do a thing till some happens, such as a derailment with chemicals involved like in Ohio. The top brass get paid a lot, while having the rail maintenance almost non existent. The trains need more staff, and the top brass taking a pay cut that can be put towards maintaining and replacing the tracks.
@pagedeveloper

That is true with most companies... I am a federal employee, and they spoke of a layoff, but did management take a pay cut no. They kept the 6 figure salaries that they had been getting. Just the small person (us who actually keep companies going) that we had to be without work for what ever time they decided. Oh Yeah, we could collect unemployment, yeah like that would pay our bills....

You should contact the local news and tell them with all the derailments this past year that this type of neglect is what causes it from the damaged train tracks to the compromised wall
Did some reading and found out CSX Transportation bought Pan Am Railways and 50% of Pan Am Southern, the former owners, in May of 2022. Looks like they have big plans for the line. Hopefully improvements are in the works.
Hey, Post. So why is that manhole cover, uncovered? Some kids or even an animal could walk onto cover and fall right in that drainage system.

Post 10 has single handedly transformed my opinion of the northeast and New England. I have so much respect for the region now. It's so beautiful. Much love from the deep South.
Great video post 10 sounds like they need to get this fixed and I live in Newark Ohio and speaking of railroads tunnels and bridges there is a bridge that's not far from my house that's at risk of collapsing and it's the Columbus and Ohio Railroad train trestle bridge and I found out that the cracks in the concrete foundation have gotten a lot bigger and to make matters worse another huge log jam has formed up right against the bridge and they don't get that bridge replaced or fixed or get completely replaced it's a matter of time before that bridge collapses so I'm thinking about reporting it to ABC 6's problem solvers and there were a few or more people that commented on my video that agree with me that bridge does need to be replaced and I imagine that you would probably say the exact same thing Post 10

I’ve seen rail from the early 1900s still in secondhand service. It’s impressive how long a length of rail can last
Very informative. I've never thought to look at the width of rails before, just always concerned that no train was coming lol
From what I understand it's a heavily used route. One would think there would be regular maintenance and possibly a floor lowering in the future to accomodate stacks. The rail is way overdue for grinding. Hope it gets better as it can't get much worse.

The moss on the tunnel entrance is nice. Like a weathered model railroad set.
Wow I could have watched hrs of you in this location and explore more of the inside tunnel and surrounding areas that was a great place to wonder around thnx for this upload you left us all hungry for more 😢
I'd love to see what this looks like now, with all the flooding rain we have been having here in New England the past week.
Waoo...it is history right there you are showing us. Glad someone cares, be well...!
You seem to be genuinely concerned so isn't there some kind of safety bureau to which you could report this?
would be nice to see the dates on that rail so we can get an idea of how long they last in freight service. Also, that barrier on the dam is made of rail so can probably find a date there as well although stuff like that is usually made of used rail, so who knows how old it was when constructed. Still in all, RR history is interesting.
Good to see you checking in on the tunnel, good water flow this time, did you hike up and see the cascades in better action? Couple spots of the trail were looking bad last time I went…
It’s basically the lake drain all over again. They rather wait for a disaster or media coverage before they actually do something

Just thought that myself, Lake Drain all over again
At least the water is not as high this time as it was the last time when Post 10 was up here
Yeah they need to get those rails replaced and put some freshly laid new ones down and those trash racks if they're not cleared out it will become a really huge problem if the water gets high enough the railroad line could completely washout as well
They haven't had enough time to prepare for this and not enough warning. You can't blame them for not taking care of this, it's too new to be failing already. Yes, this is sarcasm.
Hmm, I never thought about that; one rail being notably fatter than the other. More rail content Post 10 !!
Back in the 40's I remember riding through that tunnel on our way to Boston.
The entire area looks as though it hasn't been maintained for decades. I would have thought the railway was defunct and abandoned. Shocking that it is still in use. It's probably just a matter of time before an accident occurs.
All seriousness aside, this looks like so much fun!
We have had ridiculous amounts of rain nice video i myself have been un clogging drain pass' myself i live in western Ma i have never seen it so bad

Local municipality should be given a chance to look at this video as they can prepare for a derailment! Especially the fire depts in case of a tank car breach of hazards!
Hey post10, I’m not sure if this was the last time you visited the tunnel or not but since this video as you know we’ve got a ton of heavy rain, and that second trash rack the one closest to the under ground culvert tunnel gave way. I think it happened sometime in one of the December rain storms we had because it wasn’t like that in early in the summer. Just saw it about a week ago, the rack is completely ripped apart from heavy rain and debris
Nice and quiet.
CSX being shitty? Why I never.
Unfortunately. IT IS WHAT IT IS......Thanks and Be Safe bro!!!❤❤❤
Just to let you know trains are still allowed to go through. Awesome video my man love you!
Would be curious to know the age and weight of the rail. If you look in the web of the rail it will tell you the manufacturer the weight and date of manufacture.
Future court evidence. Sad to see such a well made drainage system be deglected to the point it creates a hazard.
Seems to me it would be easier to reroute the train track if possible since that thing looks like it’s going to cave-in at some point I mean it did last a while but they’re definitely not keeping it up for some reason😮

re-route? Where? It runs under a mountain for 4-3/4 miles!
I just went to the hoosac tunnel recently, and unfortunately, the situation has not gotten any better. In fact it’s gotten worse. The train rail has not been replaced and trains going across the rails are rocking back-and-forth violently because of the failing rail and the culver is still blocked. I would love to meet up sometime to do some further exploring, that would be fun
Not sure if you've seen my infrared ride through vid, but in it you can see a lot of damage and wearing. I was actually deposed for over 2 and a half hours recently by the insurance company Pan Am is suing for reimbursement for tunnel repairs so they could use a segment which shows the cave in occurring four and a half years before the actual cave in happened! Peace and maybe I'll see you at the tunnel one day. (Head there with my kids a lot.)
Can someone tell me what the twelve daily trains carry? This can’t be a very important line. Why is it there at all?
Is most of it from hurricane Irene that was never taken care of ? I know rt 2 Mohawk trail had lots of damage .
Hi POST ! I am new to your 2 channels so I am listen to all yours pasts videos. And this morning I listen to the same video on that track tunnel. I saw you with a girl puppy walking tru the tunnel. And I dont see the dog in some of your videos. She so cute. I dont see her in others video. Is she with you when you go on your adventures? Have a good day.
Have you ever been to the entrance side of the tunnel, I assume they built it to allow the water to stream out of both ends, from the midpoint? It has a very interesting history, 20+ years to build, many worker casualties, they say it is haunted. Did they just abandon the water power dam up the trail? It looks like it was just demolished and left alone?

So hope just by your video will make a difference
Did you see any trains while you were there?
I love that rail fence made from actual rail tracks 7:01
local and state reps should be sent this video.
Pan Am southern is the owner. Now CSX and Norfolk Southern both own 50%. Not surprised on the rail. Pan am was known to be cheap on maintenance. I doubt that rail is newer. You'd probably be surprised to see how old that rail is. Should have the date on the side.
Been here several times digging the old houses of the worker's. My buddy and my kids did this with me, they hiked up a trail to a spring, I stayed behind aygot an education from a guy that came by and unloaded on me Amazing place, expesially the Hotel in the middle where the air ducts missed.
When there is a washout from the water, then it will get fixed. I can guarantee that nobody is paying any attention because they are busy trying to keep the track open in many other locations that are more obvious. The rail on the inside of the curve is squashed because of too high of superelevation in the curve. Each wheel under a 100-ton car is exerting about 33000 lbs of load on those rails and more if the cars are tilted toward the inside of the curve. That is about the amount of load that starts the steel rail to yield and not return to its previous shape.
It's such a shame because that old culvert is cool.
After the storms of July 9, 2023, I wonder if the prophesy of damage cut into the right of way?
This line sadly has been a joke for many years. Before CSX, NS bought it from Pan Am which had also allowed it to decline to pretty much 10mph speed restrictions the entire line. It it such a shame considering how MA is laid out with SO MANY towns being on either the B&A or the B&M mainlines.

More than likely the railway is just letting it go until one part affects the public road. The rest is being left to nature. I mean they could scrap most of the materials and fill in certain parts with the falling rock. But I'm not an engineer so they must have inspectors signing off on it.
